But not with a high human price. The 70's were dominated by USSR and Eastern Bloc, and they trained their gymnists with extremely inhuman means - behind each gold medals were a lot of broken people. I supported the banning of all those flips because a girl from my own alma mater was paralysed when practicing - she was only 14.

You can see how while the sport progressed something was really lost when they couldn't touch both bars at the same time. The most exciting routines are still the ones from the 70s and early 80s. Mukhina was absolutely spectacular. Korbut changed everything and Comaneci solidified the change. The later routines show such a struggle to get from one bar to the other and the flow is lost.

One of the most obvious things is that the bars keep getting further and further apart. I wonder how much further that can go? Some of that '70s era stuff, where the gymnast swings around and transitions to the other bar by basically hitting the other bar with her hips, her center of gravity, that is quick and dramatic and cool, and I'll admit that I miss it. Of course, if it were brought back the bars would be too close together to allow giant swings, and I'd miss those. I don't think that having two events, the Close Uneven Bars and the Far Uneven Bars, is realistic, though it would be interesting. I have tried to imagine adding a third bar, but I don't think that's going to happen either, though perhaps as an exhibition thing it could.

adding a third bar would be interesting but who knows how that would change the dynamic. I think have a Closer Bars and Far Bars event as 2 (or even 3?) separate events is more realistic. After all, the men have 6 events and the women have only 4, so i think theere's room for expansion that way.

I like your idea about having separate events using the different bar separations and possibly even adding a third bar. Maybe they should introduce this in a competition somewhere? Of course, they'd have to go through all kinds of "hoops" dealing with the USA Gymnastics, the FIG, and probably the IOC if it were to become an event at the Olympic Games. Of course, I'm not the one who would actually be competing----so it's easy for me to say.😉 I'm not giving away my age or anything, but I was in high school when Nadia Comaneci was at the heighth of her gymnastics career, and I dreamt of becoming like her on the uneven parallel bars.😴😌Didn't happen-----go figure!🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ But I had fun with the rest of my school gymnastics team though, as we cheered 2 of our teammates on to the State finals that year! I can remember doing the element you spoke of: where the gymnast is standing on the lower bar with her hands around the high bar; she then jumps up and throws her legs out and swings her body towards the lower bar, and as her hips hit the lower bar her body springs back up over the lower bar into a "kip-up"---all while holding onto the high bar the whole time. It was a cool move, and if I recall correctly, it was called "The Bang"-----and for a reason.😬 Although I didn't learn how to do it until after the season ended, I practiced and practiced it fervently. I'll tell ya, when your hips hit in the wrong place, you get really bruised! Ouch!😣 Well, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! Anyway, I hope your idea gets noticed!👍🏻🤩 God bless y'all!

I cringe every time I read in a comment that the bars were moved further apart because women were breaking their pelvic bones, damaging their ovaries/intestines, etc. etc. I keep seeing it over and over on so many videos. It's completely NOT TRUE. Yes, those moves probably hurt and caused bruising like so many other gymnastics moves, but they never caused serious internal damage or injury. Please people, stop perpetuating this myth. The real reason the bars kept moving further and further apart is because as the sport evolved women started do more difficult release moves, giants, and other moves more associated with men's high bar that require more space between the bars to complete. Continually moving the bars apart allows the gymnasts to push the envelope more and more with each competition. Also, RIP Věra Čáslavská. Even after 48 years her routines are some of the most beautiful to watch.
@trolldevildean4522
@trolldevildean4522 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. Some of their coaches need basic biology lessons. the ovaries and the uterus (as long as you are not pregnant or have fibroids) are well protected in the pelvis. You can't feel them by pressing on your lower abdomen. The uterus can't even be felt until at least 10-12 weeks pregnant. Furthermore, there are many ligaments keeping them in place. Broad ligaments, round ligaments, suspensory ligaments, cardinal ligaments, ovarian ligaments, etc. You can have multiple pelvic bone fractures without even a small injury to your pelvic organs. Infertility problems are more to do with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis going haywire due to the diet, weight and the amount of physical exertion than direct trauma.

Their execution was way better, and I wish we could tone it down a little to bring back the perfection and artistic movement, rather than making it about how many turns you can do. They stumble and fall and break too much these days, and it's a shame we can't just realise it needs to be toned down to make it more impressive again!
@angedejeudi
@angedejeudi 7 жыл бұрын
Clea Strathmann I second this. Something similar happened to figure skating too, with skaters gambling on quad axel combos. Separating the technical from execution meant that it is more worth it now to cram in an extra revolution and stumble on the landing than to lower the difficulty and perform it flawlessly and consistently. It's especially evident in beam, with some gymnasts checking their balance after almost every skill, even with jumps. For me, what was impressive about beam was how they managed to look so graceful on an impossibly narrow apparatus, and how effortless they looked interacting with that apparatus. Now it's just a competition of who can do the most flips without falling off, with some out of place hand gesturing to fill the gaps. There's rarely a sense of flow or appreciation of the uniqueness of the apparatus now, making Sanne Wevers' routine in the last Olympics a refreshing sight amidst the tumblers.

The 70 and 80's were the "best" because they were dominated by USSR and Romania and Communist contries, where gymnists were just medal winning machines lie Elena, if one was broken just find another replacement - the countries derived those "beautiful" moves with a lot of human costs, not exactly the choice of the gymnists, and certain not their "creativity". It used to be exciting to watch the constant transitioning to the high and low bar, and associated spontaneity. The sport is now basically two high bars. Too far apart. The sport today lacks the innovative moves and imagination that made it electric back in the 1970s. Something tells me this evolution was due to judging criteria. Too bad.

I thought I'd remembered the bars being closer together when I was younger. From looking at this footage, we seem to have lost some of the more interesting moves and skill from the Asymetric Bars.

well, in my opinion, one can't really compare olga to nadia, olga invented crazy yet beautiful moves, but her routines didn't have nadia's rhythm, nadia was more ehh let's say acrobatic and introduced such a fluidity of movement that never existed before, i mean the rhythm she works with... they both though shared such consistency and originality that makes you just unable to stop watching. Bottom line, both of them were artistic but of totally different styles.

It seems to have progressed from what was a slower display of poise, balance and control to a discipline that is far faster, more choreographed and involves a great deal of flying. It would be interesting to find out if the injury rates have also changed over the years.

I wish they'd go for the gracefulness and beauty option instead of just power, power, power. Also I think the lower bar feels neglected, people aren't using it for beautiful moves like the dismount Comaneci did (the one that looks like a bird taking flight) and things like that.

The tricky routines from the past seem more impressive because balance, skill and maybe even luck seem to be more a part of it! Today's moves still require balance and skill, but it's more about power instead of grace. The routines seem too similar now. I like the crazy wildness of the 70s.

Amazing how close (and low) the bars were back in the day. It almost seems like gymnasts would be at greater risk of hitting & injuring a foot or leg. The slow, measured routines make sense in light of how cramped the equipment space was...maybe it was easier to get from bar to bar, and to land from the high bar over the low bar (I can certainly see why the modern bars switched the high bar to the landing side), but overall the old setup looks scarier to me. Props, Mid-Century-Modern Ladies!

It seems like the routines from the 70s/80s were more... crazy than today's and the stunts/flips look a lot more dangerous, it's actually more impressive, although every time period has it's own charm. I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of stuff from the 70s/80s is banned now. Nevertheless, I'm surprised the bars were so close to each other, I actually really like that and would like to see this comming back.

Well the seriously hard part of it was that she was standing ON the high bar, then somersaultiung backwards to recatch it, instead of the usual swing..release from the same bar to recatch. It meant her margin for error was huge. Elena Mukhina bettered it, she did the same as Korbut but added a full twist. The hype was that it was unthinkable at the time, and so difficult. It is now banned.
