19:56 I actually think that Hoffman was pulling a clever double-bluff at the end. The construction of the glass coffin mirroring the water cube, the tubes running down into it from *opaque* containers, the line on the tape "I ask you if you've learned anything on your journey of discovery?", as well as "foul me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me," alluding back to the water cube. So think about it from Strahm's perspective: this would be harkening back to the most traumatic moment of his life and he now knows that Hoffman was the one who drugged him and put him in a trap designed to kill him. (Incidentally, you said that it's not a coincidence that Hoffman left him the pen but I do think that was an accident because Hoffman didn't want any lose ends, said to Fisk that "nobody else made it," and was surprised when Strahm made it out alive. He clearly wanted him dead.) Strahm also knew that Hoffman was the one who kept setting up unwinnable games like the pendulum trap and Kerry's trap. And the opening of the tape being directly addressed to Strahm means that Strahm then knows that Hoffman knows that Strahm knows that Hoffman is the new Jigsaw. He's already tried to kill Strahm before and all the evidence points to Hoffman clearly wanting to do it again. Hoffman set up the conditions as such that Strahm would think he's lying which is what Hoffman wanted. Also, I love the idea that the original plan for this trap was for the glass coffin to be the only safe space while the room fills with water as a direct inverse of Strahm's water cube trap.
@ripdalt5 ай бұрын
i think that hoffman simply didn't expect strahm to go through with the tracheotomy, but still offered that as an option because of john's "everyone deserves a chance". but i agree, the glass cube and coffin are some of my favorite traps in the series. the room filling with water would've been good, but the crushing made it all the more gruesome
@davinasaur735 ай бұрын
I never put together the connection of the glass coffin and the water cube down to the tubes on that top that’s so cool!!
@therealpescado3 ай бұрын
Hoffman didn't make unwinnable traps, only Amanda. The example with Seth Baxter doesn't count because he wasn't working as a jigsaw accomplice that was personal vengeance it wasn't a true trap. When he became an accomplice he upheld John's standards. This is just what I understood though it's open to interpretation and I don't mean this in a mean way or anything! Saw 3D is super inconsistent I like it a lot but it contradicts so much from the other movies I choose not to think about it too much. Hoffman's killings were badass but not totally in character. Also the unwinnable trap for the innocent woman also being one of the most terrible and excruciating deaths ever makes no sense and I don't think any of the jigsaw apprentices would've done this
@Jim-pq9pm2 ай бұрын
Kerry's trap was Amanda's, Hoffman only helped. The only unwinnable trap Hoffman made was for Seth. Hoffman assumed Strahm died because most people do. Hoffman emptied his pockets, it's not a coincidence that he left him the one thing that could actually save his life
@Fantashic6 ай бұрын
One of my favorite things is how the Strahm glass box trap is a seemingly polar opposite of Kerry's angel trap, from Saw 3, and how it reflects both the of characters and who put them in their traps. Kerry was a much more physical threat to Jigsaw and the crew, as seen when she unloads a pistol into her closet, when she thinks someone might be in there. As such, her trap was focused on body and brutality. Her face is obscured at the beginning (much like how she tried to obscure her emotions around others) and she had to dip her hand in acid or have her ribs rips clean out. Meanwhile, Straum was a much more mental threat, seeing as he found out about Hoffman without much (if any) help from the other agents. As such, his first trap focuses first on his head and requires out of the box thinking to escape. All you can see is his face at the beginning (showing both how he's trapped mentally and emotionally) and to escape he had to use a tool in an unintended way and hope someone else would save him. It also says a lot about who set up the traps. Both were inescapable. But Amanda set up the angel trap so it truly was impossible to break free, because she was a bad student of John's. Meanwhile Hoffman, set up the glass box trap and while it seemed impossible to escape, it can be read he purposefully left the pen for Straum so Straum could survive, because Hoffman was a good student of John's and a worthy successor to the Jigsaw legacy.
@ripdalt6 ай бұрын
wow, that's a fantastic comparison! very well done (i wish i thought of adding this lmao)
@JustnNDTrollSniper6 ай бұрын
I don't think it's rightfully read that he purposely left the pen for Strahm. When Hoffman came out of the building, he said something like "Nobody made it, they're all dead", assuming that Strahm was dead not because he didn't pass his test, but because there was no test, Strahm was supposed to die. If Hoffman intentionally left the pen, he wouldn't have assumed that Strahm didn't make it, he would've been unsure about it, but he was dead surprised to see Hoffman getting wheeled out of there with a hole in his neck

People can say whatever they want, I firmly believe the Fatal Five's Trial is the best game in the series. The individual traps may not be particularly special, but how they come together as a whole is perfect. It's a completely fair game and reminds me so much of Saw 1 in terms of the victims having to figure out for themselves from each other why this is happening to them

For my money the group trap in 5 is better than the one in 2. The one in 5 builds to a revelation but the one in two has a bunch of sidequest distracting from the main game of getting the numbers off the back of their heads.
@ripdalt6 ай бұрын
that's a solid point, i never really looked at it that way, but it definitely reads like that. the one from 5 is much more focused on the games, whereas the one from 2 is more on the relationships and dynamics of the group, while also completing their "fetch quest", in a sense
@HeartburnMan6 ай бұрын
That’s because 2 wasn’t originally a saw script. I have always thought saw 2 was slightly overrated 😅
@RoxastheRose5 ай бұрын
I think the game in Saw II simply needed more personalized traps, as there were really only two and overall didn't seem to be "rehabilitating" the victims in any meaningful way. I think the tension from a time limit and having a social aspect of people to betray each other offered a more interesting environment as there was a slower build up to everyone becoming desperate to survive rather than the immediate sacrificing in Saw V. They're both pretty good in different ways, and kind of show an evolution to the Jigsaw persona to the point that the survivors of the Fatal Five actually having "repented" from the experience, recognizing their sin and pushing through the punishment John set out for them, something that has repeatedly been a failing point of his games.

Finally, someone else understands and appreciates how good (and at some points bad) saw V was. I see everywhere people saying that saw V was one of the worst out of the franchise, but it's probably top 3 for me. What I personally think the downfall of the movie was what was done at the end of saw IV, revealing Hoffman as an apprentice. It seemed so rushed and out of place, compared to the gradual reveal of both John and Amanda and the end of i & ii. If they had kept the real identity of Hoffman from the audience, it would've allowed the audience to follow Strahm through his revelation that the accomplice is Hoffman, further emulating the mystery and paranoia of the first movie and paralleling the paranoia and distrust in the fatal five trap. The problem with the flashbacks is that they happened whilst Strahm was the focus, which made no sense as they were from Hoffman's POV, making it seem (like you said) that he was just coming up with "headcannons", and the scenes would've would just fine without them. I can see why the writers/director wanted to include them, but I think it fits better in saw VI. Removing the flashbacks shifts the main character solely to Strahm, rather than both of them. Additionally, it makes the chase for Hoffman seem a lot shorter, as the audience are not entirely sure it's Hoffman throughout saw V, rather than going on for two movies (saw V & VI). Two. Movies. Therefore, when he dies in the glass coffin trap, it confirms both to him and the audience that Hoffman is the new jigsaw, and then perfectly leads to Saw VI and Hoffman's attempt to conceal his true identity, truly starting the chase. This movie had the potential to be one of the best in the franchise but they focused on Hoffman too much. In summary, the movie would've been better with less Hoffman and more Strahm lmao (pls don't come at me he is one of my fave characters, it's just that this movie was made for Strahm).
@ripdalt5 ай бұрын
i agree wholeheartedly. the potential was there, and peeked through at points, but in the end was just that, potential. having this one be a "strahm movie" would've improved it way more, and then allow 6 and/or 7 to be the hoffman ones, especially if they insisted on having strahm still die. either way, his character redemption is beautiful to see play out
@sjgambler91786 ай бұрын
I think one of the most interesting aspects of the series is their ability to retcon so much into the story and still have it be manageably cohesive and make sense. I think the liberties they take are outweighed by the amount of storytelling they gain from it. I believe the biggest issue of the movie was having the Fatal Five games and Hoffman/Straham cat & mouse game not being interrelated Straham should've had a personal relationship to one of the five players to at least make it that his follow up of Hoffman is related and he needs to do quickly and adds more stakes and you could still keep him being fired from the case due to him not being able to control himself to save that close person to him
@ripdalt6 ай бұрын
i 100% agree, they just felt thrown in for the sake of having the traps and gore to be considered a "saw movie"
@danitabori6 ай бұрын
I just thought of this reading your comment but maybe they could've made it so that Strahm has to balance having somebody he knows in the Fatal Five trap and solving the case he does in the actual movie. It would go back to the scene in Saw1 when John asks Tapp what is more important to arrest him or save another life :)
@bisexualmajima6 ай бұрын
I think rather than have him be close to one of the victims, it'd have been better if he lost his shit during the case at one of them, maybe committing a little police brutality and roughing one of them up (perhaps Mallick for example because he _knows_ he lit that fire since he's such a good detective but his father's hush money/interference from his higher-ups is protecting him) and got taken off the case for it, hence making it much more plausible to Erickson that he'd be the Jigsaw killer and give him more motive for targeting them, also that whole thing of Hoffman trying to convince him of his viewpoint would work better too if Strahm does feel similarly to how Hoffman does.

I really love this movie and I find it stupid when people say generic things like after Saw 3 the series went downhill and stuff like that. But there is one big thing that I don't like. Because they showed Hoffman being part of so many early traps, it makes little sense how he was able to make something like the pendulum trap. I mean the earliest trap where Billy appeard is Amanda's as far as I know but the pendulum must have take place way before that. So how did Hoffman even know about the puppet? Also it seems too elaborate for an early trap. The knife chair for Cecil was great because it was minimalistic, easy to understand and it actually broke, so it's believable that it was one of the first traps. I think the makers were just too much into making a crazy opening trap which also had to be an early trap in the timeline. Even though the main gauntlet doesn't connect with the main story, I really like nearly everything about it. For one it's not the Saw3 and 4 formula which will be used for 2 more movies, where one person goes trhough several traps and has to make decisions for others in the actual traps. If Saw 5 had the same structure then you could really say how same-y these later movies are. But 5 is unique in this aspect. The other thing is that this time nobody was supposed to die. John likes to talk about giving chances and he gets pissed at Amanda for creating unwinable games, but except for this one, basically every trap had to have at least one dead person (except where only one person was trapped of course). The first main trap we see is the bathroom where he literally gives Dr. Gordon the task to kill Adam. He is cheating on his wife, but is it better to make him into a murderer? That's the problem I have when people praise Saw1 so much. It wasn't thought through completely, Jigsaw's morals where not as clear as they are now in the later movies. So yeah in Saw5 they were able to make traps which at the first glance look like 1 person has to die in each but at the end suddenly there is a machine which has holes for 5 people. From there you can think back about the other ones and find out that they were supposed to work together. Genius. I also like the boxes from Strahm, like you mentioned. I think you are the first YT-er who talked about how the box that fills up with water is pretty similar to the box at the end. So it's no wonder Strahm doesn't want to enter it I don't understand one thing from the scene where John is talking to Hoffman the first time and maybe it's because I don't know much about guns. What is the relevance of John opening the gun after Hoffman finds out that he oculdn't get shot. We can see that there is a bullet so does that mean that John could've killed him with the next try or was it luck that he wasn't actually shot? I don't get it.
@ripdalt6 ай бұрын
you made some very great points here, some i wish i had in the video itself! i think the scene with john is kind of confusing because he's leaving it up to chance whether hoffman lives or not, kind of like anton chigurh. but it's completely antithetical to his "everyone deserves a chance" outburst mere moments prior

saw v frustrated me to no end when i saw it initially, purely because of the fact that it was a revelation to the fatal 5 that they could've worked together. i understand that the characters were fundamentally selfish people and thats the point of their test, but i think its far more realistic (and compelling) to see adam and lawrence do elaborate schemes and plans to get them both out alive - especially because they reason to dislike/not trust the other. when i saw the bomb shelters i was sooooooo mad because there was obviously room for at least 3 people in one chamber. maybe if they made them more openly vindictive from the beginning like the drug dealer from saw 2 then maybe i would buy it more. i think its a problem with the escalation of the saw franchise (i mean saw 6 literally begins with the climax of saw 1, someone sawing their own limb off to survive but somehow even more intense) but overall i think fondly of saw 5. i really love strahm's character and his almost cartoonish investigations (the way he whispers to himself about what he found out kills me) and honestly don't mind the retconning. the amount of physical labour needed for some of the traps imo would be far too much for a cancer ridden old man and a recovering(?) drug addict. anyways, enough with the essay. i love keeping up with this series!! keep it up 🗣🗣

I love the entire storyline and twists and turns they hit us with, and I love the characters (some much more than others) my only “issue” which is probably a little closer to a first world problem, but I always have a hard time remembering which scenes are in which movie. I know the story and all the flashbacks I can just never remember which movie they’re in. Only happens in IV - 3D

A lot of people say that Strahm failed his test by not getting into glass coffin. But what if he got in, what would be next for Strahm and Hoffman? Strahm is the only person who knows and has evidence that Hoffman is the Jigsaw. In order for Hoffman to continue his reign of horror he needs Strahm gone, dead. There is no way they can collaborate or have an agreement. If Hoffman wanted to test Strahm one last time and let him live he wouldn't be sneaking around making sounds outside the room. This question perplexes me because people say it so surely "yeah he died because he failed the test". Was there even a test?

i do genuinely believe that hoffman gave strahm a fair chance, and had strahm listened to the full tape, we could've had strahm continue his pursuit of justice in at least another film. though, that could've felt a bit stale and samey when that's what we already got with 5

Personally, Saw 5 is actually my favorite entry in the series, and I know that is a very unpopular opinion. So why do I love this entry so much? Well… First off, this is Strahm at his finest. He was the first to survive a trap that was not intended to be escaped. He also beats it in a crazy and badass way, a tracheotomy on himself. Then he goes to lengths to figure how the truth about Hoffman and almost succeeded in bringing him down. The chess match between them is a delight to watch. Also, his response to the first tape is priceless. Second… the main game was a refreshing take on Saw 2’s game, and was one of the few scenarios where it was very possible for every victim to survive. Sure, the characters were selfish, but they did actually try to think the traps through before acting, something we often don’t see. The third and most important aspect was… Hoffman’s role. As I have said before, Hoffman’s my favorite character in the series, and this film is his origin story, so that right off the bat gives it immense points. But… I also loved how they fit him into the earlier films, I never saw any issues with it, it was seemless and added more depth to the timeline, and also made it more complex, which I adore. John Kramer had quite a few great moments. Of course his confrontation with Hoffman, but actually my personal favorite John Kramer quote is in this film. When they are setting up the game from Saw 2, John says this… “If you’re good at anticipating the human mind, it leaves nothing to chance.” This line then comes full circle at the end of the film, where Hoffman uses that thinking to outsmart and beat Strahm. Then there’s the ending. Yeah, there’s no massive twist aside from how Strahm was outsmarted, but that makes the film stand out to me and just seeing it play out was enough for me. Overall this one I have always been most entertained by and always has the replay value, especially considering who my favorite character is in the series. I’m glad you at least acknowledged that the film is nowhere near as bad as lots of people claim it is, especially since Saw 7 exists. And yes, I refuse to call that film anything else. Calling it Saw 3D reminds me of how pointless the 3D was, and calling it “The Final Chapter” is an insult to Friday the 13th’s entry of the same name.
@ripdalt3 ай бұрын
very well put, this one may go down as the most underrated in the franchise, there's so much to this that can go unappreciated when getting caught up in the strahm vs hoffman game. but it's such a joy to watch, and i'm glad others think so :)

If Strahm had gotten in the glass box, would Hoffman have just let him go? Jigsaw himself would, but I get the sense that Hoffman is more concerned for his own safety. What would the followup have been? I assume Strahm would have continued investigating Hoffman if he'd survived. Would Hoffman maybe still have framed him for being the accomplice?

I don't like how Hoffman was initiated. His "trap" was too easy compared to every other trap. All he had to do, in his mind, tell a man who just got done screaming about how "murder is distasteful" to pull the trigger on a shit gun. One can deduce that his captor would likely not kill him as it seems and there would have to be a twist of some kind. I do like this movie, but that was a small thing that bothered me. I would have preferred if he had a better trap before joining Jigsaw. Idk if they tried to fix this later when Jill put him in that trap or what.
@ripdalt3 ай бұрын
i'm not sure if that was his "initiation trap" or not, i think that was more of john setting up a new accomplice. i think his initiation was being the help for john (kidnapping/fighting the razor wire guy, setting up the saw 2 house, etc.)

I hope that, when you get to "Saw X", you watch it with audio description. My favorite audio describer, William Michael Redman, is on there, and I want to know what you think of it, as a sighted person. Before anybody asks, I’m able to type because I’m using Apple’s screen reader, VoiceOver, which makes the phone talk to me. I just hate when people ask me how I type, if I’m blind, like they’ve got somethin' on me lmfao! So, yep! I hope you'll try it out. I’m not sure how to turn on audio description on anything more than Netflix, so you'll probably have to play around a little, but the setting shouldn't be impossible to find. With Netflix, it's in the settings with the different languages and captions, so maybe that helps.

I don't believe Hoffman left Strahm a pen in the water trap. Hoffman received the note in his office that says, "I know who you are." That was revealed to be sent by Dr. Gordon. That makes me think even more that Gordon either captured Strahm and stuck him in the water trap, or he snuck a pen in his pocket when Hoffman left. Gordon gave him an opportunity to survive. Hoffman just wanted to kill him. That's why Hoffman was surprised to know Strahm was alive. He never gave him a pen.
@ripdalt5 ай бұрын
y'know that's a fair point, i hadn't even thought of that (but i suppose _technically_ we aren't supposed to know gordon is still kickin it in saw 5)
@christophermcbride25225 ай бұрын
@@ripdalt I think we're meant to believe Strahm left the note, but there are several hints that Gordon was always around, even if it was retconned into the story. "Saw 3" possibly gave many hints. There's all the hospital equipment that, while likely stolen, would have been easier to get with the help of Gordon. This is more evident when Dr. Lynn tells Amanda what she needs to operate on John. Amanda first calmly asks her what else Lynn needs after noting that she needs anesthetics. Lynn believes John needs better help at a hospital. Amanda cries and yells, "Anesthetics! What else?!" Amanda more than likely knows about Gordon, but he's kept as a secret from Hoffman.
