Amazon Prime is actually one of my guilty pleasures. Because, the barrier to publishing is so low, pretty much anyone can put a movie on Prime and as long as it doesn't drop below 1.5 stars (I think) you can watch a whole catalog of amateur, shoestring budget movies that aren't usually great--but entertaining for the wrong reasons.

Yes, and also: A very spread out light from one side (45 degrees to the camera) that is just a bit brighter than the one one the other side and no light straight from the camera area. To make it look good also add a light from directly above the subject coming down on the hair. Don't have any light coming upwards unless you are making a horror film. This keeps the reflected light from the face of a picture from going to a camera but also provides enough shadow effect on the face so that we get the depth perception thing working.

Yeah, that's what I though, too. On the other hand, however, it's one of the myriad of violations of the "Chekhov's Gun" principle that this movie commits and I suspect that triggered Emma (as it likely would many movie critics). The principle says that in a narrative plot (such as a movie) every element you put in should have a reason for being included, otherwise don't put it in (as otherwise it would only be distracting).

@@PeteOtton good question, I don't really know. What I can quickly find by googling is this: 'No matter what, the scene in The Lodger called for a telephone operator to fill the space. "It was strictly utilitarian," Hitchcock said in his interview with Truffaut. "We had to fill the screen. Later on it [his cameos] became a superstition and eventually a gag," he remarked.' and: 'As part of an extensive series of interviews in Francois Truffaut's book Hitchcock, the director stated that he is conscious of placing his cameos within the first five minutes of the film to avoid extraneous audience distractions as the narrative thickens.'

I hope you can get recompensated or hope at least it doesn't happen again. Anyway, being a former infantryman in the U.S. Army, I can say that the protocols and details of how soldiers are portrayed in even big budget movies, is often inaccurate so it was definitely...far from good in this discount Predator lol. I mean they are supposed to be part of the Navy and I assume, Navy SEALS, but the uniforms are definitely not right and little/no accurate protocols again. Even the main Predator movie did not get certain things right like the types of weapons they would be issued and how they held them but of course we loved it for other reasons.

I heard a profile (on NPR, maybe?) of the Asylum a decade or more ago, and their boast was that they'd made money on every movie they'd ever produced. Their big secret was simply that they sold the movie first - distribution deals, TV rights, and the like - typically with nothing more than a title. Once they had the cash in hand, they'd budget the film well under that amount. Only then would they worry about details like a script.

Movies like this remind me of the discount store brand food that's sat right next to the name brand ones, enticing you to buy it because it has a slightly lower price, when secretly its actually made by the same people who make the name brand, so they get paid either way.

I've seen so many movies to where a character is horrible the whole movie and you not only expect them to die but actively root for them to die. Then you come to the realization that they will be the last survivor and will learn nothing.

Sad that you neglected to add Alien resurrection. It had the same fun-action style that Aliens(2nd film) had. The story wasn't amazing but at its core we got space mercenaries and ripley vs aliens... which is Essentially also the same. Aliens(2nd film) was my favorite of the franchise so maybe that's why I'm so lenient with actiony nonsensical versions of alien. Maybe give it another try.

My favorite part was the Alien Predator reveal. Not the one in the movie, but the part where she totally flipped the armored version to the not armored version at exactly the correct time to really capitalize on the heightened tension of the whatever was going on in the film. Well played.

It's funny how the "alien predator" vision can be blocke by a simple plastic pallet The Asylum didn't even tried to mask as something else.

Hey Emma, my brother is a film editor and he's done a lot of low budget. He edited a film a while ago called Aliens vs Avatars. It has nothing to do with the two movies of the same names. I suspect it will make this movie look like a high budget production.

People often mention how The Asylum undoubtedly profits from tricking people into buying their movies by mistake. But I think a large chunk of their income must also be from exactly the kind of morbid curiosity that prompted this video.

That last scene where you're confused about it being static is because it's a composite of a shot of brooks and a model of some sort. You can see that the shadows don't even line up, and his is darker, despite being further from the light source than the trees. It's for more of a travesty than at first glance.

Yeah, they may not allow people with PTSD to serve now, but back in 2004 they most certainly did lol. I got diagnosed after having a terrible dream and when my wife at the time tried to wake me up I pushed her onto the mattress while twisting her arm behind her, then almost punching her. In the dream I was touched on the shoulder so I was seeing my dream, but feeling whatever was going on around me? Like, half awake, half asleep? Anyway, they diagnosed me with PTSD, went and did my train up at JRTC in Ft. Polk Louisiana, then did my NTC training in the Mojave desert, and in January 2005 I was off to Iraq for the second time for a year instead of 3 to 6 months lol. It's wild though. While deployed I had 0 issues with my PTSD. I'm guessing because I was right back in the middle of the thing that caused it to begin with, so it felt normal, but of course 2 to 3 years later I ended up having trouble with it and my back, and I was let go from the military. I guess that was when they possibly changed it? I don't know, but interesting that it says they don't allow it when they most certainly did lol.

You NEED to see Cold Moon. They had the budget for Christopher Lloyd, but the VFX make this movie look high quality. One of the first signs is a scene where it’s supposed to be raining, and you can tell there’s just someone off screen with their thumb over a garden hose. And it goes downhill from there.
