Unasur was created at a time when most presidents were from left-wing parties... when right-wing presidents took office, these countries began to leave because there was simply no dialogue... there was no consensus... mutual ideological prejudice between leftists and rightists got in the way a lot. So much so that Prosur was just a right-wing version of Unasur. The right-wing presidents left Unasur with that super prejudiced mentality of "I will don't sit down and talk with these damn... repulsive communists" and got together and founded Prosur. Then comes the situation where Brazil, for example, after the defeat of Bolsonaro (right-wing president) returned to Unasur when Lula (left-wing president) assumed the presidency... but remained in Prosur for... bureaucratic and very complicated geopolitical reasons that I confess I don't understand very well. Mercosur is much more stable, regardless of the ideology of the presidents.
@mosaloquendo
@mosaloquendo Ай бұрын
The main thing that caused the UNASUR losing members was the mechanism for the election of the general secretary, Bolivia and Venezuela constantly boycotted any candidate that they didn't like, making impossible to elect someone because all countries had to agree. After a couple of years like this, Colombia left starting the disintegration of UNASUR by the other countries. At first glance it might seem only political but no one cared about the union since 2013-2015, Mercosur had different ideologies but not even Milei, Bolsonaro or Lacalle Pou had real plans to leave
@CarlosD374
@CarlosD374 28 күн бұрын
There is however a massive issue with Mercosur and it is how slow and bureaucratic it has become, failing to actually provide any trade benefits in the last decade. The customs union is in need of reform and became one of the most taxing around the world, which perhaps wasn't that much of an issue a few years ago, but with Argentina currently attempting to rebound economically, it will probably have to ease some of its measures to allow Argentina to develop SOME competitive international trade.

International Unions in south America seem to easily fracture and the individual countries re-allign based on what the goverments political leanings are at the given time. The countries are also quite quick at establishung those new Unions. I just hope they dont overcomplicate things..

@@cdw2468 It is not left wing-right wing division. It was neolib states like Peru and Colombia versus populist states like Venezuela and Bolivia, while also Brazil leaning towards that direction. Up until 2023 Argentina was aligned with the long time centrist liberal Colombia and the libertarian fujimorist Peru, yet the neoperonists (left wing) were in power, does that seem an alliance based on ideology?

UNASUR was especially promoted by Chávez (Venezuela), Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Kirchner (Argentina), and Lula da Silva (Brazil). They had plans for joint-military defence of South American soil, a special courrency for the block, and free pass between countries (like the EU). Sadly, Néstor Kirchner died too early, and Chávez followed him in illness soon after. With these two out and Lula's successor kicked out of presidency and replaced with Bolsonaro, the UNASUR fell death.

There is an actual reason for the breaking: UNASUL became quickly ideological and associated with some far-left communist groups that did not reflected every member. Also there were some conriderable members who wanted to imeditelly create a unified South America, the opposition didn't liked that, and the fact the many were communist boosted that lack of trust.

You may be wondering why so many shifts in recent years. Well, basically Unasur was the only organization that wasn't just a US puppet, then it was destroyed. And Mercosur is more like a customs union (you can travel and trade with almost no papers). Unasur in fact avoided wars during the XXI Century
