Interesting. We were always encouraged to pray and study the Bible. Memorizing and reciting Scriptures in SS was a big deal too. Sadly, I realized when my son was young, there was not much emphasis put on that. I have found that congregations in the UMC vary greatly, and leadership from the denomination and conference is minimal.

Steve V. 🎯 Your statement hit the Bulls Eye dead center 🎯. Matters not if one is Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian or anything else when it comes to these type of issues. ALL that really has any relevance is what ALMIGHTY GOD has to say concerning the subject. “ There are ways that seem right to man, but the end result in death “. “ WOE unto the that call evil good & good evil “. When God says WOE about something you better think twice.

That I should "not rely on others to tell you what it all means" is itself a belief that was taught to you by someone else. If we don't need anyone else to teach us the word, then we should never listen to anyone else preach, teach, or discuss the Bible. Never mind that the Bible literally says God gave specific believers the gift of preaching and teaching.

I honestly think that the biggest problem in the UMC is " Church Politics " If you are a Charter member, depending how money you have given, you can do and say whatever you want, no one will stand up to you. This UMC is next to a very expensive nursing home, so we had lots of elderly attending. They came on a bus, I took it upon myself to help them off of the bus and to help them get back on. I did that for over 5 years. I was called lots of things for that. One day a lady stood up and said " everyone needs to learn a lesson from this young man, " He helps anyone in need, he sits on a stool at the back of the Church and keeps an eye out for anyone who needs help. He has brought water to people and has helped others who are having a low sugar attack. " The lay leader took the microphone from her." There were no other words from the Congregation. Everyone seemed to be afraid. Before the choir sang the closing Hymn, the lay leader took a mic and publicly chew me out. I was forced to resign. So much for the Love of God.

Very interesting. I am Catholic but my Scout troop growing up was based out of a UMC. Given that I grew up in non-Atlantan GA and the political convictions of most of the troop, I would guess that the church was a little more theologically conservative on things, including the last topic mentioned. Down here Methodist churches are almost as common as Baptist churches, and are held in a much similar reputation. I wonder how different a UMC congregation is in, say, Boston than down here.

Speaking as an ordained elder of the UMC, I again commend you for the fair and mostly accurate portrayal you have given. The differences I noticed would be called trivial by most and are more a matter of nuance or a matter of the difference between stated positions and actuality withing the denomination. I do draw everyone's attention to some important points though. The Discipline is the official statement of positions (even though it is ignored by many of our leadership). Only the General Conference, speaking as a body, is authorized to speak for the denomination. Often times (but not always), the Book of Resolutions you mentioned, contains matters that the General Conference failed to stuff down our throats by force and is sometimes even in opposition to the Discipline. In truth, at present, the UMC is all too riven by disagreements. Many put social goals ahead of any theology. The Discipline is ignored where inconvenient and ruthlessly enforced when convenient. I have colleagues who are extremely theologically liberal and others who who are just as extremely fundamentalist. Often times, on a one on one basis, they are wonderful people but, collectively, cannot abide the positions of the opposition. It seems that popularity and not theology is the driving force behind everything today. I am trying to fight the despair that attempts to consume me for that comes from the adversary. I am doing my best to be true to my vows to "make disciples for Christ". At present, that is in hospital chaplaincy.

Although I left the UMC a long time ago, I still have a certain "affection" for the church. I've been watching the development of the schism in the UMC and am heartbroken at the place the UMC is in now. Nevertheless, I would encourage you not to despair. Although God may be disappointed in us and in our failure to resolve this--even when He gave us everything we need to do so--have faith that He will use this moment in a variety of ways that we can't even imagine to guide us and teach us and bring us closer to Him and each other, although He may do so in ways so subtle that we may not notice them. Also, I want to commend you for taking on the difficult and much-needed work of hospital chaplaincy, but please don't forget to take care of yourself and take a break if you need one.

That's because Methodism was originally just a reform movement within the Anglican/Episcopal church. Methodists have the same creeds and virtually the same Articles of Religion. John Wesley, the founder of the movement, never intended to separate from Anglicanism and died an Anglican priest. The American revolution and the refusal of the English church to ordain Methodist bishops in America forced the creation of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Later the name was simplified to just Methodist. When the Methodists merged with the United Brethren in 1968, the name was changed to United Methodist.

I think this was very informative and accurately describes UMC theology, and it’s a fair representation of the debates going on in the UMC at the moment on LGBT inclusion. I grew up in the UMC as a kid and was confirmed there, but I left in college, mainly over this issue. I found a new home in the Episcopal Church and was re-confirmed there. It was a painful decision, but ultimately the right one. I still consider UMC to be my childhood church, so I’m hoping they can move past their current challenges. As time goes on, I find myself becoming more and more conservative when it comes to ritual, and more and more liberal when it comes to theology. The UMC, however, appears to be doing the exact reverse: taking out their beautiful pipe organs and altar rails in favor of guitars and stages, but still not accepting LGBT members into the fold as full members of the community, and in fact voting down several proposals at General Conference to do so.

Being from the Methodist Church in the Caribbean I find it odd that so much of the United Methodist Church is outside of the USA. It doesn't seem like its own autocephalous Connexion within a discernable geographical boundary. Also, we would consider a 22,000 member church as its own Circuit. Maybe even a mini-district with its own Suffragan Bishop. So the seminaries are bending their theology for the sake of preserving the denomination? Might as well not have a denomination then. That's not a solid reason for such an issue.

At 1:05 it's sad to see the usual falsehoods about Catholics trotted out. The body of Christ, consisting of the members of the church, is a sainthood, we don't pray to saints, and we don't require saints to be mediators. We do ask others to pray for us, just as all Christians do. As it's worded in Catholic liturgy "we ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the angels and saints, and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God." Only God is being prayed to. We're not praying to our brothers and sisters standing beside us in the pews, nor to the angels and saints, nor to Mary.

Well one thing that i say, is that if Gods word isnt inerrant then how can we trust it? And what gives it any authority whatsoever? Its like saying someone could write another and that would be ok if it was spirit led, it could be valued just as the bible. If Gods word is not inerrant i dont want it.
@whome9503

Most churches state that they believe the Bible is inerrant in its original form. Which means they don’t believe the current Bible we have is without error. And since we don’t have the original, we can never know what errors are in our current translations. So, the above statement leaves these churches an opening to interpret the Bible to suite their own theology. I hold to the fact that God will preserves his Word no matter the error in Biblical translations and God’s message will not be lost because of man’s attempts to twist Gods Word to their will.

As a United Methodist pastor, I'd like to point out that the UMC is an experiment in theological pluralism... many different theological ideas, being a wide umbrella gathering in those on the left and the right, progressives and conservatives. That experiment has failed, and this is the reason for the separation we are currently seeing. I hold to the inerrancy of scripture and believe that Abortion should be illegal.

It's sad that some Christians don't believe in inerrancy of Bible, the church have belive that for 2000 years.

By saying that "salvation is a life long process" Methodists are relying on works. Of course we continue with the Lord for all of our lives but we do only because "He which hath begun a good work in you will continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." [Phil.1:6] We continue with Christ because of Christ. Salvation iis all of grace. See Acts 13:48, 2 Timothy 1:9.Methodists/Wesley will not look at Col.3:9. Wesley's conversation with Zinzendorf is notable, see my book on the cross.

It's funny how the International Churches know what the Bible says about marriage they understand exactly what God was saying about marriage, and they are standing strong with the Word of God . Amen That is something hard to do in this country, you are judged by what you believe Man's word OR God's Word Where many U.S.A. churches are on the side of what man says instead of what the Word of God says I believe the Word of God, not man's word Everyone has a right to believe as they choose , that's the great thing about freedom about the U.S.A.

Losing faith isn't like losing your car keys. To "lose" faith means to reject it as Truth. Why would anyone reject their faith? One of many answers is that the world becomes more attractive and enticing. Just because one has faith doesn't mean they can't be lured back to world's ways...though some Christian denominations would argue otherwise.

You guys are wrong on so much. ..! I attend a Methodist church that disaffiliated from the UMC for reasons that are obvious.. happening in about half of the churches..but very little doctrine in preached.. Thank God I heard and understood the Gospel the blood stained message of forgiveness of sins through Faith alone!! In Christ shed blood. , the eternal security, rapture and such are doctrines that are taught in the bible. Through the revelations given to Paul from Jesus Christ himself. Definitely not the words…but the doctrine is there. A millennial reign and then the judgment!! FOR THE DAMNED!! Not the born again, sought and bought by the blood of Christ, new creature .!! Most here will disagree.. thats fine. But i will NOT stop giving the Gospel that SAVES!! First Corinthians 15. 1-4 Romans 3: 25. Its by Grace through faith!! Ephesians 2:8-9. Its not what we do…- it’s what we do with it. Recieve eternal life by simply trusting from our hearts, that Christ died, was buried and rose from the dead on the 3rd day according to the scriptures. Recieve the blood atonement, by faith. Then we are born again. Heaven bound! Im not saying that if you don’t believe in the Bible doctrines.. you’re not saved. Being saved is trusting by faith from the heart that Jesus’ finished work on the cross ( shedding his blood for the forgiveness of sins ) is what saves us from HELL. Recieving the blood atonement. That’s salvation. The other doctrines that some group says is not true.. well. They are wrong !!2nd Timothy 2:15 Says to STUDY !!!! Righty divide …. So we are not ASHAMED. Or Deceived. Into a system of works and traditions. BTW…. It’s pretty shallow to throw out something just because “ The Word “ is not in the Bible. Such as rapture. Do y’all throw out the Trinity …????? Or Bible ….??? The word is not found in the Bible..🤷. But the Doctrine definitely is !!

Romans 1:26-27 That is why God gave them over to uncontrolled sexual passion, for their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; 27 likewise also the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full penalty, which was due for their error. A person chooses to be homosexual. It is his thinking that has been affected, urging him to make that sexual preference. The Bible agrees that this is at the base of the problem. The Bible reveals that a homosexual can change. 1 Corinthians 6:11 And yet that is WHAT SOME OF YOU WERE. But you have been washed clean; you have been sanctified; you have been declared righteous in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God. The New English Bible’s rendering of Leviticus 18:22 is: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman: that is an abomination.” Has God's thinking changed? If the church follows the bible will attendance drop because young people are in favor of LGBTQ? Is this a matter of financial support? Is that a good enough reason to except homosexuality as normal and acceptable? Follow your own hearts and desires. In the end it will all be for nothing.
