Great tip. Another tip for viewers: watch the slow motion section from 4:20 to 6:00.and notice how much work Jeremy's feet are doing to create space for this close-the-gap swing.

This video is pure gold, thank you very much. My forehand volley became perfect in the first session after watching it, magic! Sending bullets right on the baseline. I feel this channel does not get the recognition it deserves, amazing quality content!

Amazing! You are the only one that has ever explained the "close the gap" move to ensure that you hit a clean and powerful volley! I have improved my net game so much in one day! Amazing!

best volley lesson on youtube! .. I have been struggling with volleys for years and almost lose my hope ...this tip and 2 weeks of work(10 minutes of ball feeding per day following your drills) fixed it. but even after very 1st session I already felt it works. I decided I need to go back and tell you thank you ! truly appreciate your work !

This is brilliant! Doing shadow sings now, can't wait to try. You're right I have never seen anyone explain the volley this way, may take awhile to learn directional control with this method.

The volley is just been fixed I was trying to get more power with more of a swing motion causing errors. If this idea keeping of elbow out which then makes the power from more room for foot work to back up the arm and wrist. This is just the greatest gift to have a volley thanks.

Jeremy, you are the first coach who mentions "side spin" on the volley. For eons, coaches have told students to slice the volley, which is hitting the bottom of the ball (6 o'clock). My son used to do slice like this on balls with heavy spin, and he always junks the volley to the net. When I told him to slice by hitting more to the side of the ball (8 o'clock or 4 o'clock), he no longer junks the ball into the net. Even on the pro level, on heavy spin, when they try to volley a heavy spin ball, they will hit the volley into the net. Does this make sense?
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Alex Daudsyah when receiving heavy topspin you want to open the face less on the volley in comparison to when receiving a flatter ball
@alexdaudsyah49815 жыл бұрын
@@FundamentalTennis Thanks for the tip on handling spins for volleys. Jeremy, does your tennis machine do topspin and underspin? Mine does and have experimented with how to return volleys with my son. If your machine can do spins (mine is Tennis Tutor Pro), you can experiment too.

Thanks for the trick! It looks like what Federer does for his backhand volley. My coaches always say "karate chop or punch the volley" so this something new.

Jeremy, I don't often comment. This is excellent stuff. You should just search through and "myth bust" all of the bad advice thats out there. Can you do some more videos on ball spacing, racquet positioning and ball contact relative to body. I have trouble timing my volleys and moving forward into the volleys without "coming up" on them

Hey Jeremy. I love this. I practiced this technique this morning and you’re right there is so much more feel and therefore control. It seems to keep the racket head open a little longer which prevents a constant problem Ive had of netting volleys. Can this technique be adapted to the backhand?
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
David Colman glad u liked it! Yes if you watch the pros you’ll see they go much more across and even more down due to the hitting arm being in front
@Radnally5 жыл бұрын
The difficulty here is that the exposed surface area of the racket is greatly reduced when its tilted this much towards the approaching ball.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Radnally sorry I’m not sure I follow you.

This is only when he starts his swing where his racket is very open but when he contacts the ball, the racket face is vertical or slightly open.
@georgesunaryo50804 жыл бұрын
Looks so easy, but it's the most difficult for me to do, my problem is l always swing it, l know before volley l always say to my self 'don't swing..don't swing..' but l still do that,mostly l panic when it comes to volley.

Is it even possible for the elbow not to come close to the torso even without this tip? I feel like on any stroke swinging across the body is a bad idea, although you say the racket is not supposed to travel across the body.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Yucel Guldali hello. Not sure what your question is or if you have a question but I’m happy to help if you need it. I see rec players all the time “punch their volleys” and NOT come across.
@watcher6875 жыл бұрын
Fundamental Tennis I was thinking it’s better to extend forward, swing through the ball, towards the target also on groundstrokes. You say you see a lot of punching but there are so many swinging across the body with weak ineffective shots as well.
@FundamentalTennis5 жыл бұрын
Yucel Guldali just like groundstrokes, volleys are typically out and across. Give it a try
