You failed to note the potential candidacy of Bronn for seizing Rosby. Lollys Stokeworth has a claim on Rosby, and given Bronn's willingness to resort to violence for advancement, he might pursue it. Personally, I believe he'll seize control of Rosby amid the Kingslanding crisis, following Kevan's demise, ultimately pledging allegiance to Aegon. He might even be the one to rebuff Cersei or Margery's entry.

It also, with Castle Storkeworth, puts him in control of a large portion of the Crownland breadbasket. I think he'll cut that off and we'll see something similar to the riot of Kings Landing (probably a second riot). It could add to the Cersei mad queen arc, or help fulfill the "cheering crowds" part of the cloth dragon prophecy. Aegon brings the commoners food, security and far better rule than Cersei and they rally in support of him.

You say Rosby is not in the show at all, but actually in Season 1 Episode 8 The Pointy End, Sansa briefly addresses Lord Gyles by his first name before she's about to plead that Joffrey spare Ned's life. I don't blame you, it's a blink and you miss it moment, but I was watching the show with friends who haven't seen it before and popped off at the mention of Gyles Rosby. That episode is now in contention as my favorite of the series for how uniquely it feels like everything was ripped straight out of the book with basically no alterations. No surprise that was Martin's episode for the season.

The muster on their arms is called ermine. It can have some really crazy forms and is quite prominent in heraldry, where it is classified as a fur. The animal it derives from is also quite damn cute, named ermine or stoat.

Ermine furs are used as lining for coat and cap/coronet of nobility and great care are made to ensure the black tip of its tail are included in the product (which is where the black pattern on the shield come from) as it is serve as proof that it is fully made from real ermine fur. Also Its like how tractors are seen as vehicles of farmers but a Lamborghini tractor is such a symbol of wealth to the point that most would ignore the fact that its still just a tractor. Also compared to weasel, ermine is a symbol of purity since according to legends, it would rather die than have any stain and blemish on its white coat. This is actually more because ermine is only white in winter, so it was never seen in other season. In other season, its just a stoat.

Houses like Rosby and Stokeworth and others in the crownlands reall had it bad in the Dance of the Dragons first they fullfill their oaths and suport Rhaenyra only to face the choice between geting burned by Vhagar or submitting to Aegon, then the green dragons leave and Rhaenyra's dragons arrive and they face the same choice again only to be punished by Rhaenyra for not wanting to burn, the greens then return and punish them again for trying to look out for the survival of their families and submiting to Rhaenyra, no matter what they did they were just doomed to get the short end of the stick.

Fun Heraldry Fact: The "arrows" are called "Chevrons" and as others have mentioned the white fur with black flecks is Ermine which is used as trim on many forms of royal clothing, especially among the Brits, it seems. They're basically just a white, "Mink", a glorified weasel. Cheers!

In crusader kings 2, the agot mod with the bloodline submods makes them a very funny match with the Freys, because if you sum up their respective bloodlines bonuses, you get a noticeable increase in tax revenues, so they are nothing to scoff at in terms of magical eugenics programs. XD

Sometimes I get surprised by George's overlooking of certain things. He's spent so much time world building in Essos, but overlooks Rosby succession like its nothing, he even kills Gyles and writes that detail about his world. Wouldn't House Rosby, a thousands year old house, going extinct be much more of an issue and plot point, especially with a childless Gyles being a staple in Storm and Dance? Oh well.

The pattern on the sigil is called ermine, after the animal, which has white fur with a black tip on its tail. When a cloak is made from the fur the tail is left as a little tassel (you quite often see it worn by royals) creating the pattern. The black bits in heraldry can vary in design, but what you see in the Rosby sigil seems to be the most common. :)

The Rosby "crest" or arms are actually among the most historically accurate in the series. The little black things are a heraldic fur called ermine which is very common and was, for example, featured on the coat of arms of the Dukes of Brittany in medieval France. The three red things are chevrons. Historically, they tended to be going upwards and not downwards, but this existed too.

Gyles actually appears in AGOT where he coughs at court. Also, his funniest moment is when, at the Blackwater, he drinks so much in Maegor’s Holdfast that he passes out in a bread trencher (a plate-like thing) and Cersei is disgusted by it.

I quite like the rosby's, their arms are based on real life heraldic imagery which I find both simple yet pleasing and interesting (i just really like ermine) but they are also interesting to me because despite being small and relatively minor compared to the great houses they still are able to maintain relevancy through their close proximity and good politcking so they keep popping up in westerosi history in secondary yet still important roles

Well the Rosbys and Stokeworths own the land just outside King's Landing. They might be underappreciated but during times of trouble, they come in clutch (basically keeping the capital alive prior to the Tyrells switching sides) so it pays to keep them on the Crown's side.

@@gooby214 You make a good argument, however, to offer a counter: Olyvar doesn't immediately appear to have low birth but if you think about it, he is nowhere near being the first son of Lord Walder. Stevron's ilk will inherit The Twins, Emmon's will inherit Riverun. Their descendants will be as high born as a Frey can get now. The rest of the sons, especially one as low on the ladder as Olyvar, could be seen by someone as arrogant as Cersei as being lowborn. Additionally, the Frey name carries a stain with it now.

The "tree cross patterns" are what is known as a fur in blazonry. There are several different types. This particular one is called ermine as it is supposed to resemble the fur of an ermine [stoat-like creature] in a highly stylized way, and the "arrows" are called chevronels .

The pattern is ermine, it represents the fur of stoats. It was associated with wealth as it was (is) very expensive, as not only its high quality, but you need a lot of the critters to make a single cloak. The flag of Brittanny, now a province of France but in the Middle ages an independent duchy, uses it.

I have a feeling that the children of house frey by the rosby wife of Walder Frey will all die by the ends of winds of winter. Olyvar may very well likely have been murdered for his refusal of the plot as while Walder is not a kinslayer we know many of his sons and family are rather too eager to eliminate any obstacles and move up the inheritance ladder. Walder doesn't know everything his family does, and we know that big walder killed his cousin. And between the golden company, dragon queen and the vengeful north some of whom definitely remember him, he's gonna die. Roslin is the daughter of Walder, and many in the riverlands and north will hate her for this, and the brotherhood without banners is plotting something, and we know Stoneheart hates frey's so imagine her reaction to the woman who was the bride at the wedding where she lost her last known son and daughter of the traitor. Plus she knew of the plot, not good. Perwyn and benfred are young, and age doesn't save you, stoneheart and the wolf pack under Nymeria are more then likely planning a trip to the twins or riverrun. Also, they are likely now squires for other lords, and the crownlands are not safe at all with them threatened with invasion from Aegon, the faith, cersei plotting and daenarys coming, so in war they can easily perish. The maester is old, and in sackings the old die easily.

OT: A history channel I watch once had a GRRM-not-finishing-WoW joke. Now, when you think of it, a history nerd *would* be likely to read ASOIAF (and now that I think of it, the fact that I follow history channels as well as fantasy ones shows there's a lot of crossover), but it still shows that this has become a cultural meme. It may even become Martin's most enduring legacy unless he actually finishes his most famous work. Anybody else hate the Rosby Sigil? It’s just Three Red Arrows, if you can call them that, like you could pick anything, a fierce animal, a mythical creature, hell they provide food to the King’s Landing, maybe they could have a carrot 🥕 or Corn 🌽 and instead it’s just three lines. To be fair their Sigil is better than House Hasty and House Chyttering, at least it has the ermine.

I have to say I disagree about the Blackwood and Bracken thing. GRRM loves to give us another bit of information that reverses opinions on the information we already had and I think in the end we'll see that with this little feud. I think we kind of have the information already though. The Blackwoods came from up north and were driven out by the Starks. They came south and established themselves at the court of a Bracken King and then usurped them. The Brackens going to have been the kings of the red fork and with a red stallion on there logo that seems to jive too. My head canon is that the Blackwood that came south was a skinchanger and that's made himself useful to the king of the red fork and then naturally took up residence near that giant weirwood tree.

Not all Freys are bad in the books, and they don't have low means. This isn't the show. Also, there's no evidence George's planning to kill all Freys. He kept infamous houses such as the Peakes alive, and there's Freys everywhere in Westeros. The story won't focus on all of them. There are Freys even in the Vale, relatives in the stormlands, one outlaw Frey, and even Freys in Essos. Also, I see no reason to kill off decent Freys such as Roslin, Olyvar, Perwyn, and others, and the random ones we don't know, or the infant ones. Why would George waste his time killing them off just to please black & white simple readers like you? Plus, many Freys are probably going to assault each other, and Stoneheart will get some more.
