I think that Julian being twice John's age at the time of these recordings results in a lower tone. In the early part of his career the resemblance was even more remarkable. Check out Too Late for Goodbyes.

that's what I was thinking, and it sounds like he's singing softer / closer to the mic as well which brings out lower frequencies more

Julian naturally has a similar voice as his dad’s, but I think he deliberately tried to put his own spin on the song so as to not be an exact copy of John’s voice. Julian is an exceptional person whom I truly admire.

It's worth remembering that Julian's voice has aged when John's, sadly, wasn't allowed to. Julian sounded sooooo much more like his dad in his youth. Still does in patches but perhaps gives us an insight into how John might have sounded if he had lived to Julian's age. Great video, Fil.

Fil asks, "HOW is [a child's] voice SO similar [to their parent]?" I was once watching an episode of Midsomer Murders and was troubled by the thought that I recognised an actress from somewhere but could not recall where. After a while the name Annette Crosbie popped into my head which satisfied me enough to let go of that thought until the end of the episode when I would check for her name in the credits. When I saw the actress's name, Selena Griffiths, I did not recall having ever seen it before so I looked up that name on Wikipedia and discovered that Annette Crosbie is her mother! She doesn't look anything like her mother; she has dark hair, is taller and more solidly built, and obviously much younger. It was just the similarity between their voices which was enough to trigger the recall of a name.

I have always loved the sound of John Lennon's voice,.....especially the low tone of John's voice when he spoke. John was....is my favorite Beatle. The Fab Four, unique, world changing, loving. Irreplaceable, ....BEAUTIFUL BEATLES. Julian sounds like his father's voice. Perhaps not entirely perfectly, yet very similar, father and son. Julian is talented and his voice, not doubt, like his father, John, just lovely, sweet,, and emotional to me. Julian has lived through certain trauma, IMHO JULIAN ( AS he has proven) to have an angelic, strong, gifted & talented voice. Thanks so much Fil for this happy journey. . APPRECIATE YOUR time. I actually love the softness of the guitar playing during JULIAN 'S Rendition , sweet and soulful. JULIAN and JOHN do sound very simalar.....delightfully. so. Fil when you talk about Julian sounding slightly lower than John and the wobbles in his voice etc, remember to consider Julian's age when he recorded this version of "Imagine" verses John's age when he recorded "Imagine". Julian is almost 60 years old in this recording (2022) whereas John was only 31 years old when Imagine was released (1971) If you go back and listen to Julian's earlier tracks, his voice is much less shaky and higher in register as well as more closer to the nasal quality of his dad. They were almost identical sounding at the same age range

Wow incredible ! Thanks for bringing this up Fil ! They look very similar so probably have very similar bone structure to help them sound so similar. Julian is built heavier too, not as nasal as John

Julian is heavier here when he was 58 years old. When he was in his 20s he was very thin just like his dad, and sounded so close to him it was very difficult for me to find exactly what the difference is (and I have listened to John's vocals hundreds of times [or more lol]). Check out the TopPops video for Julian Lennon Valotte, and you'll hear (and see) what I mean!

Great analysis again Fil. One thing you said about the “nasality”, Julian has probably a different accent to his dad. John had a strong Liverpudlian accent which has quite a lot of nasal tones. Just loved the comparison.

Hi Fil, Really great analysis. Very interesting to see the two voices side by side. I always admired Julian making his own way in music and life despite the tragic circumstances of his dad’s passing. Great job looking at father and son sing this iconic song. Thanks so much, Debbie☮️

I was today years old when I learned Julian and I are the same age. I would love to see them use original masters and have John's track & Julian alternate the verses until the end where Julian could sing harmony to John's track. Similar to years ago when Natalie Cole overlayed a duet/harmony to her father, Nat King Cole's original.

Enjoyed your analysis, Fil. I always thought Julian sounded a lot like his dad, but he takes a song and makes it his own by adding his nuances. Like you say, music is art, and each artist, when they reach a certain level of artistry, gives the music their interpretation. 🙂

Great version of a great song. 👍👍 To say pitch correction is the norm now is such a sad state of affairs. Lots of the pitch corrected singers have great voices and some dont, but now their are all tarred with the same brush.

That was very interesting, I do remember back in the mid 80s when he released his first album, being struck by how eerily similar Julian's voice was to John's, but it makes sense, obviously. I actually didn't realize that Julian's voice was a little bit lower than John's, but can hear that now. Good to hear a bit of Nuno too! 😁

At that point in John's career, possibly. John sang in a much deeper voice when he was a member of the "mop-top" Beatles. It got more nasal and higher later.

I remember my friend recorded a track with a program that develops harmonies for you. And, he and I said it would be interesting if you sang those instead. So, we got the genius idea of using the corrected tracks as reference tracks. And, that's how I would encourage corrective tech to be used. It allows you to be accurate without losing a natural sound

I have not seen or heard of Julian since in his mid 20s or early 30s. He was tired of people trying to compare him to his father. Sing like his father or songs of his father. I had never wish for him to be a son trying to be his father and neither did he. Julian when I heard him had a great voice of his own. This has happen to other children with famous parents who were singers. Let the children play reading and hearing of people. I apply the same, Let the children sing, not wanting to be like their parents. Thanks, Fil, for this and the person/s that ask for this. I had wish Julian could just be let along and be his own super star singer should that what he wanted.

this was very interesting and it validates some of my thoughts of certain people who look like each other, and also sound like each other when they talk. Bless Julian for not bowing to the new way of doing things and using pitch correction on such beautiful lyrics. Can you imagine if they did pitch correct it, it probably loose the ghost of John voice in Julians.
