My sister had her first psychotic break around the same age as Jared. To watch someone you love deteriorate into psychosis is heartbreaking and scary. I read everything I could on schizophrenia but I still couldn't grasp what her experience must be like. I couldn't understand why she thought we were poisoning her food or why she thought our elderly neighbor was a sniper sent for her. She believed that t-shirts worn by random strangers contained messages meant for her. Many times over the years she would refuse medication and the same pattern of symptoms and behaviors would recur eventually leading to hospitalization. Twenty years later she's doing well considering all she's been through. She has an apartment, a job, family, friends, and a few pets she loves to spoil. Your video made the experience of schizophrenia accessible and understandable for me.

Great to hear, my sister went through something similar last year, awful ended up in multiple suicide attempts. She seems much better now but still very quiet some days. I don’t mean to be nosy, but did she ever have another psychotic break?

I have never heard of the random dopamine rushes that occur in an unwell mind. This explains why a person experiencing mental illness may think they are receiving important revelations. This is an important observation if one is trying to understand the nature of a universe unknown to the rest of us.

I wholeheartedly agree. That made so many things click for me as it relates to the utter randomness of delusions people have when in the throes of mental illnesses. It can be so hard to deal with the world of a loved one struggling with an illness neither one of us can understand. The random dopamine spurts that trick the mind into thinking “this is important!” is SO helpful in bridging that gap.

i haven't heard of it either, but i've heard a similar idea in a vsauce production where a dollar bill comes out of a slot every 30 seconds on a fake game show, and the contestants start to believe it was their actions causing the money to come out (walking, dancing, talking, etc.) in the mind, a random reward could be attributed to a specific thought or action, this might be a factor in OCD compulsions and rituals. i never considered that it could be an influence in every day life and especially for psychotic people. i've definitely experienced this, im glad to keep it in mind now.

My son's slide into schizophrenia was very similar to this, although he has never posed a threat to anyone but himself through self neglect. At the time of his crisis, every surface in his room was covered with postit notes full of to-do lists, very little of which made sense. Since diagnosis and medication, he is calmer but a shadow of the fun-loving, gregarious young man who was on the bright threshold of adult life. He has some insight into his condition and we can laugh together now, but it needs to be gentle. He gets by, day to day and as for the future, who knows?

wishing you, your son and your family all the best. x I am a mum to a 17 year old who is also dangerously self-neglecting , painfully shy and with OCD tendencies (probably brought on by a condition caused by a genetic mutation) and a lack of self-awareness. He won't medicate. I pray it won't get any worse but it will be a life-long struggle to keep him from deteriorating.

I don’t understand why someone who is clearly unhinged is often not psychologically evaluated until they exhibit violence. If they’re not in their right mind, they’re unpredictable. It’s also inhumane to let someone live like that without trying to get them help. The school should have contacted his parents, at the very least.

It's really hard to help a mentally ill person if they don't think they need help. And they aren't saying they want to hurt themselves or others.

Because insane people are in power, and they are short sighted. "human rights" today basically insist on allowing people do whatever they want, doesn't matter that they harm themselves and others. Supposedly putting people into psych wards against their will somehow is against their human rights, but the fact that these people absolutely walk on the human rights of others doesn't matter. Liberalism will eat itself.

I wonder the same thing. I've been mentally ill for years. And trying to get help for so long. Every single Dr did't give a shit enough to give me an evaluation or diagnosis, until it got so bad that I began having seizures, black outs, and psychosis, one seizure leading to a wreck, which lead to me finding a neurologist which actually helps me. I am so greatfull that I've finally found a decent Dr. Now I've been diagnosed with amnesia, and psychosis. And I'm still trying to get a psychiatrist. It can be horrifying when hallucinations seem so real that you'd swear they were real, I swear, hallucinations that I could see, touch. Even people I can talk to. When it's that real, my memory is no longer reliable, and it's horrifying. I truly feel for anyone in those shoes. And though I'm agnostic personally, I still pray they get the help that's so so needed, before they ever want to or become violent. For anyone in need, please at the very least, please know that you most certainly are NOT ALONE!!!

Me ex has schizophrenia and this video has provided a lot of insight into what he experiences. delusions are the mind’s desperate attempt to make sense of hallucinations. Ex: I’m hearing voices in my head that are not my own = if they are not my thoughts they must be someone else’s = if I can hear someone else’s thoughts, others MUST be able to hear my thoughts = telepathy MUST be real. To the average person, thinking someone can read your mind sounds outlandish, but the to person that is actually hearing voices, it’s completely rational as the mind tries to make sense of what it’s experiencing. Great video. I love that, while you are clearly knowledgeable on these topics, your videos are easily digestible to the layman. I’ve binged every video, hope there is more soon lol

It's nice to hear a specialist medical professional commenting on these subjects. There are a lot of people out there with experience in investigating or reporting crime, who obviously understand those specific jobs, but who don't seem to have a comprehensive understanding of human psychology, especially from a neuroscientific perspective. I know enough to know when I think those people are missing the mark, but not enough to understand what exactly they are missing. So it's interesting and fascinating to hear your input. Also, I very much appreciate your balanced and compassionate approach. As a side note, I found your comment, "...I'm not smart enough to do that" ironic. Finally, I am thrilled by your use of correct grammar! :)

I never knew about the prodromal phase in schizophrenia, even though my uncle had severe schizophrenia. His family always thought it was triggered by drugs, but I wonder if they saw warning signs beforehand which could indicate it developed organically. I suppose a lot of people turn to drugs during that phase to self-medicate, though, so it’s probably very difficult to parse out egg vs chicken. Thank you for the excellent educational aspect of your videos.

I’m friends with a woman who is bipolar with psychotic features. My heart has broken for her so many times for the lack of any truly effective treatments for her. Despite her medical care and the psychotropics she takes she’s only getting worse. I look at this case you’re presenting today and am again so sad that he didn’t get the care he needed - so many lives ruined including his own. And just look at the homeless population- how many of them must have treatable illnesses. This is a problem that needs a whole lot more money thrown at it for research.

Wow! I have watched all your videos. You bring a unique and intelligent insight to Jared Loughner and I don't think I have heard anyone explain his thinking and actions in such an easily understandable way. I have watched quite a few videos on this case but you covered facts and perspectives I hadn't even thought of. I would LOVE to hear your views and hear your opinions on others who have committed crimes that have a mental illness. I majored in psychology back in the 90's and my ears loved hearing terminology and "big words" that others avoid. It is pretty weird to think that BCE doesn't have a known starting point, just an end point and that CE doesn't have a known end point just a starting point. Obviously these are just constructs anyway, but I can see how someone with a severely disordered mind might panic at the quasi-logical idea that if BCE has no starting point then time as we know it cannot exist.
@macysondheim
@macysondheim Жыл бұрын
No. These are just human created concepts. The earth revolves around the sun approximately 365 days in 1 “year.” There’s approximately 24 hours in one “day.” 365•24=8,760. BCE extends 8760 hours for every “year” into the past, with no starting point. So when you were learning this stuff in algebra class, what you were really being taught was from the subliminal ideas in the textbooks from your so called history class. Confused? Allow me to explain… Because of Pagans and Blasphemers like Dillahunty, Dawkins, and Darwin, who attempt to poison faith and souls with " scientific "absurd lies that we have accepted as true to absolute trust, as it was" scientific "and inscribed in the textbooks as "scientific theories” that were embedded in our textbooks many centuries back long before coming out into space and prove to be that the Earth is a spherical Globe and yes Darwin's Evolution has been supported, that is, we have been trusted long before it is proven that the Earth is Globe, it has already been in the classrooms as a proven fact, and since science says this is a proven fact, we must accept it and this is not a matter of discussion, nor of contemplating, opposing or refuting this "proven" - "scientific" question! "This Richard Dawkins, who called the Lord God the most evil, abhorrent and insulting words, that God is a psychotic, psychosomatic criminal, invented of crazy and misguided people. This Richard Dawkins even says, laughing, that in his book there is a better description of the Lord God by reading a quote from his book: "The God of the Old Testament is undoubtedly the most unpleasant character in all possible fantasies jealous and proud, a petty bastard who forgives him under his control, a fugitive bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a myogenic, homophobic racist, infantile Genocide Phyllis idle, a petty megalomania, a somato-chaotic, capricious malicious abuser! "it is possible that such a man filled with hatred of the Lord - God and homage to the Devil (because only the Devil is filled with hatred), a person who claims to honor "science", how can he say such abominable and simple and offensive words directed only to our little faith, preaching to totally give up and "set free" from it? Why? To be given the other faith of the "scientists" who preach to us their "Scientific" Pseudo - Fantastic, absurd, and never proven theories so far? Then let us break down and remove all the churches, mosques, temples, cathedrals, and everything that engages us with God. This Richard Dawkins must be tied to a stake in the middle of a square in the center of the capital and put a plaque above his head "Blasphemous" - "Unbeliever," "Eretic,"And all the People They have to spit and ridicule who approached With him, at least a month before be subjected to lynching by the people! Do not Believe on These Computer Graphics and Images CGI SEE with your own eyes through a publicly accessible telescope and you will understand the truth! Oops! Uppsala! I forgot that publicly available telescopes do not exist anywhere! SpaceX = FakeX. Spacecraft does not exist the way the scientists and NASA present it to us ALL rockets that fly upward change their trajectories horizontally and detonate in a controllable environment No Missile Engine exists that simultaneously operates in a normal atmosphere and at the same time functions in a diluted atmosphere, and most of all in a vacuum, because without air there is nothing else to move them in. Instead, missiles and shuttles would be thrown out of control turning around your own axes in all directions like a gyroscope It would have been impossible to fly to the moon or go anywhere in any direction, especially if "gravity" was real and constantly sucking you to the closest and most dense body But even if there was such an engine, imagine how it would work in a vacuum, since the thrust of the engine would be meaningless, because there is not really what to push, because there is no other force to oppose or counteract it to there is some push in any direction, making it impossible to move the rocket even a centimeter in vacuum space. You know how airplanes and missiles fly in the atmosphere that has a density and they actually push it to move, but the vacuum can not be pushed because the vacuum is nothing, it has no density and can not counteract or react to the rocket engine! We really make us fools, because we are not familiar with the principle of engine work in vacuum for their convenient profit. If the vacuum existed in space, no magical "gravity" and no force of gravity could be able to hold our Atmosphere under pressure! The atmosphere under pressure would have been sucked in only a fraction of a second by this vacuum, which has opposite opposite force to our Atmosphere, and let us not talk about the absurd ozone holes that would affect the atmosphere like a pierced inflated plunger! As it is said, the satellites are worn in the thermosphere, where they are tempering The metals used in the satellites, however, such as aluminum, gold and titanium, have melting temperatures of 660 ° C, 1065 ° C and 1668 ° C, all far lower than those at which they would ("The temperature depends on solar activity and can rise up to 15,000 ° C", says Wikipedia in the same article and a little further: "Despite the high temperature, one will not feel the heat because the particles are too close to the cosmic vacuum and almost have no contact with other surfaces and therefore can not PU Device must be free from indoctrination completely once we instill more than 50 years that a person is not intelligent design as a result of "Darwinian evolution" we descended from apes, which is ridiculously inadequate and wrong. The complexity of the human genome and the human cell proves that Man is intelligent design, not accidentally evolved and evolved from the amoeba. The information that carries our DNA and the complexity of the cell only part of it would not fit into a huge empty library! According to Darwin's "Evolution", the monkeys are monkeys left behind: the drawings in textbooks showing the human embryo at a different stage of development that resemble fish, amphibians, lizards, dogs, monkeys and other animal species have proved to be pure forgery. A gynecologist who has been abducted has not seen such a perverse abusive lie, and can confirm this! "The Dinosaurs" were also created to support "Evolution" because it began to lament and collapse long before the complexity of the human genome was established and discovered. Unfortunately, the dinosaurs exist only in Hollywood movies and in some museums only as plastic attributes and plastic skeletons, and when we ask where the real big bones are, they answer that they are seized in a safe place so that they do not get damaged and offer us to look only the small bones that are ordinary chicken bones! OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE GOVERNMENTAL SCHOOLS WHICH WE ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL THE ROLE OF THE EDUCATION OF OUR CHILDREN WHICH IS A LARGE IDEA. SCIENCE NEVER MUST BE EQUILIBRATED, GOVERNED BY GOVERNMENTAL GOVERNMENT, MANIPULATED, CONTROLLED BY THE GOVERNMENT, AND THE SLAUGHTER IN ONE MAGIC CIRCLE! SCIENCE MUST ALWAYS BE OPENED TO QUESTIONS, MUST BE OPENED FOR NEW EVIDENCE AND THAT IS NOT SCIENTIFIC! THAT WE ARE NOW, THAT IS SCIENCE, SCIENTOLOGY, TRANSFORMED IN RELIGION, WE LIVE IN THE WORLD WHO WE SEE EVERY DAY AND YOU YOU CAN NOT FIND WHAT IT IS REALLY AND WHO IS NOT!

This episode is one of my favorite YT’s for providing me a totally new insight on mental illness. I have a schizophrenic neighbor who alternately interacts normally with me, and then, in the same day, vandalizes items on my property. Her husband advised me to not interact at all, because he said it increases her likelihood of behaving dangerously towards me and/or destroying items on my property. She is often off her meds, and I have no way of knowing her status; it’s not always obvious. This video helps me understand the degree of disconnect she may have in her experience of reality that can make it impossible for her to understand how disordered her thoughts are.

In my nursing training (many moons ago) I did an 8 week rotation in a voluntary mental health unit and one of my first observations, when talking with patients experiencing psychosis, was that in most instances, if one accepted the basic premise on which their experience and/or thoughts were based, their entire perception, understanding and interpretation of their reality was often absolutely logical and understandable. As a voluntary psych unit even those with psychosis were generally not majorly thought disordered compared with others for whom I would care later in my career who suffered really extreme forms of mental illness and psychosis. It was a real "eye opener" for this young trainee though.

While people with BPD are hyperfeminine and the dx has also been weaponized for misapplication, if you had ever been close to someone with BPD you would know these people are in intense pain and have functional impairment. Hello, Thank you Andrew for another fascinating deep dive into a mind suffering from Schizophrenia. This case is devastating from all view points, my greatest sympathy is, of course, for the victims who were killed and injured and for the pain and loss for their parents and loved ones. I don't known if Jared was insane or consciously vengeful when he carried out his heinous crimes, but Schizophrenia sounds terrifying to live with and endure. All severe mental illnesses are very complex, to me at least, but watching your videos has thrown light on mental disorders and potential motivating factors for evil crimes. Xx

Psychiatric professional here. A good video. One point that really not made is that the time frame from when illness is apparent to the time of when they receive any kind of help is over 2 years. We all seem to tolerate passively the strange elements of psychosis until the behavior is catastrophic. There is a strong literature saying that early treatment of psychosis can be extremely effective to point of remission of symptoms, something that rarely happens in severe schizophrenia as he shows. Also, another point is that all we humans seem to be designed/wired for causality. Meaning that we all run little daily experiments and appropriately respond to the outcome. If I am mean, and I am rejected, I might change my approach. The syllogisms that he was making implies that this circuit was broken and lies at the heart of a thought disorder.

Thank you. After listening to this, I would like to hear you do a case study of every psychiatric diagnosis. Your explanations have a depth I’ve not seen anywhere else. I’m a Christian, and I am always trying to grasp the relationship of psychology/psychiatry and morality. I’ve noticed that KZbin channels which bring some pop psych to true crime, seem to be split on psychopathy. Half of the YTers say that psychopaths are evil, and the other half say that psychopaths can’t help it, they are simply wired differently and that doesn’t make them morally evil. I’m sure there are more examples of disagreement for other disorders. It’s a fascinating area to ponder, as our natural tendency is to classify a disorder as either a moral failing or purely a medical diagnosis, whereas I imagine the truth may be both, at least in some cases. I hope you make more videos. You could probably also write some awesome college textbooks too.

Christian here dating a diagnosed psychopath (ie ASPD but his eval called him a psychopath, which I find rather unprofessional but w/e) for 15 years (thinking of breaking it off due to lack of development in his life / personal responsibility; when we were younger it did not make such an impact). In my mind they functionally can't help it. Even if they behave normally, their social intuition is severely impaired and their biological / neurological responses to emotion display, violence, etc. are abnormal. For example, my partner says the only facial expressions he can consistently recognize are fear and pain and so he seeks these out in others to have the stimulation that I infer most people would get from emotion "consumption" generally (I'm autistic so I don't either-- I typically date people with borderline to obtain this stimulation bc I can't detect subtle emotional displays).

My former boss is having a manic episode right now and texting me alternately telling me to stop contacting her (I have not had ANY contact in over 3 years) and that she wants to talk, cc'ing me on emails to people about her dreams about AI takeover (we work in AI so it's not as out of nowhere as for a non tech person), etc. I don't think she's ever had an episode before but I'm afraid to try to direct her to help in case she fixates on me further (especially since she has borderline and the combination of psychosis and bpd could easily lead to rapid mood fluctuation via overinterpretation).

A lot of Americans seem to think that mental health is “an excuse” that people accused of murder use to get away with their crimes. It’s incredibly hard to successfully plead “not-guilty by reason of insanity”, even if the accused has a proven record of severe mental illness.

Re: dental work and auditory hallucinations.. in very rare cases a person's mouth can act as the receiver in conjunction with their body which acts as the antenna. A metallic filling can become a semiconductor that detects the audio signal, and the speaker would be something inside the mouth that vibrates enough to produce noise, like bridgework or a loose filling. Subtle vibrations carry the tonal frequencies of the transmission which is then perceived by the hapless individual as auditory input. The conditions for this to occur would need to be ideal, but there have been a handful of documented cases. Not with Loughner, though. He's just batshit.

The mind of the schizophrenic has suspended reality and stepped outside of the normative paradigm and if they are aware of their own variation from other people - they need to find an answer to what is happening and their mind is capable of variations to reality so within that paradigm the interpretation of an implant by the FBI/CIA becomes a logical conclusion.
