This series stands alone, meaning you do not have to have watched Yellowstone before this show. Obviously, there will come a time when the stories have to merge, but that's a long time in the future. 1883 has characters so real, so believable, I don't feel that subtle bs I have felt on some series through the years, where some scripts or particular characters are molded into something that doesn't quite feel real, because they aren't. Every character here feels real. It's the writing, and the casting, and everyone bringing their best. You can't fail with Sam Elliott. I've watched him since Mission: IMPOSSIBLE, when he played Dr. Doug, no 'stache, but the character who would stand up to Jim Phelps when necessary. He was bringing it then, and all these decades later, he still is. I love Shea Brennan, and everyone. I've never seen a series like this, to be honest. I've backed away from TV because I don't like most of it these days. At first, I watched because of Sam. Now I watched because I love the show. I cried like a baby so many times already, it's making me mad almost, how much I believe in this show. I hope it lasts. Just don't put me to the test by killing off Shea or Thomas or the gypsy woman and her kids. So many others, too. And may I add some heartfelt respect to the way the art department is giving us detailed drawings of the characters. Respect.

I took a trip across USA in 1980. All the little towns of the mid west looked like they had just been dropped in the middle of nowhere a short time before. Comparing USA to South African small towns, which seemed older with more history that has never been told and never will.

Many commenters complain about the lack of historical accuracy, which may be legitimate, but they seem to have no feelings whatsoever for the depth of artistry and exceptional acting and production. This isn't a documentary, it's a work of fiction. It made me cry, and still does. Historical documentaries do not. Find meaning where you can; this was one of the best films and best Westerns I've ever seen, better in my opinion than Lonesome Dove. It's okay to note the historical glitches, and some of them caught my attention as well, but this was an exceptionally good film rich with meaning, about life and death, dreams and disappointment, love and loss. Historical documentaries by contrast may be interesting, but hardly move me to tears..

He thought he deserved better sexier and younger lady's hanging on his arm ! Faith is a great MoMA great influence on young teens ! And a truly home body ! Family first ! So he and Talor could play house ! Faith gave him a ultimatum ! Seperstes for a long time ! His daughters got to him ! They also gave him ultimatums ! Tim now back home in rehab ! Hope for the best ! When I found the commercials being advertised on the regular Paramount Channel I am mediately knew I was going to love the series. Then the chance came to see it on the regular Paramount Channel and I liked it more than I thought I would. The acting is phenomenal the characters come to life and you feel their pain their happiness their concerns it's awesome and I'll be sad when the series is done. Because I'm going to miss these people. I don't watch Yellowstone but I really like 1883. I love the West. Life was not easy in the 1800's in the western era difficult with everything you had a face I don't know how these people did it but they are the true survivors that brought us to where we are today

The series shows the grit and determination of our pioneers. The wins and loses of the daily fights of our westward expansion. It also demonstrates what Frontier Justice was and how good people get forced to do bad things to bad people for the greater good.

I hope cast reads these comments. Elliot did more than act. He transported viewers into the depth of grief, pox, and unique perspectives that don't exist anymore. I am glad I haven't met these actors in person because if I did, I would be a crying lump of despair. That's what great acting is. Not only believable characters but believable environmental situations. When Elsa died, it took me a week to get over. Since this show, I have Google earth'd Paradise Montana and planning my own trip. Though 1883 was fictional, the place isn't. And I want to see it!

Taylor Sheridan must truly be a studied pupil of Louis L'Amour his tales are so evocative of the master it's hard to believe he has not been influenced by him. That is a good thing the quality comes through especially the importance of family.

JEEZ! The plot is absurd for the year 1883! The West was pretty much settled by 1883 (In 1890 the frontier was officially closed) and the mini-series totally ignores the railroad, which were up and running coast to coast by 1883. This was the means by which the immigrants got to the Oregon country. Also, absurd was the vast numbers of hostile Indians and bad hombres that seemed to be behind every bush or tree. 1883 is too late a date for the wagon train. This period existed from 1830 to 1860....1853 would have been a better date, although the Mormons made the trek to Utah in the early 1840s and didn't encounter a faction of the bad luck seen in 1883...The Mormon casualty rate was about 10% and most of the pioneers didn't even have covered wagons - they pulled hand carts across the wilderness.

The biggest problem with 1883 is the lack of Mexicans. Texas was literally Mexico in the 1800's. There were 2 million Mexicans in Texas in 1883. But not one on the show. Just ridiculous from a historical standpoint.

Yeah especially when they showed the struggles of a black man, immigrants and Indians, but no Mexicans? Maybe they weren't that far north? Taylor has made a few mistakes, but none as big as saying either Jack or Spencer are John's grandfather, Jack has to be John's father, Jack is also another name for John sometimes, plus we don't know if his first name is Jack, he could be John Jack and goes by Jack. But he has to be John's father, as John's father was already born well before 1923 as he died at 90 in the early 90s

I total agree with you ,I did not even know who she was .The main reason i watch the series was Sam Elliot . Well by the third episode ,I fell in love with this young actress she is only 21 years of age and have this much talent .Taylor Sheridan had said he need a bridge too build the story of why Dutton settle in Montana , he found that in Isabel May .OH by way i have never watch any episode of Yellowstone and wouldn't be . The acting was great and the realism of the series was great also .For season two i don't know if i what to watch them build a other story line it not going to be as good as this one was . My final thoughts is that we will be see more Isabel may , I think this her big break , and Tim doing more western .

I have not had cable tv or streaming services in 20 years, but I saw the trailer for 1883 and knew I had to watch it. The only place I could find it was Paramount +, so I signed up! I thought that I would be able to binge watch and cancel not realizing it was a brand new series. It is ok though . . . the series has already proven to be worth well more than the subscription price!

I really like Yellowstone and I'm watching the Beth/Jamie storyline closely. In sum 1883 series is amazing and I love it a tad more. ;)

The episode I watched was above average. It dealt with immigrants in a different context. Subjects like small pox and just the harsh reality of those days along with the incredible bravery of the pioneers. Any modern Western usually has its own spin on Native Americans. A difficult subject to portray objectively. So far, so good.

Taylor Sheridan is a breath of fresh air within an industry that seems to have gone stale. Hollywood has been plagued by a shortage of creativity for many years now, 90% of the most popular films have been based on earlier movies, comic books or novels. It seems no one in Hollywood these days has an original notion in their heads. Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant long format writer, his unique style is so far removed from the redundancy we’ve become accustomed from Hollywood. His plots and concepts are so simple and straightforward, the storyline easy to follow, so there’s not too much “connecting the dots” in his work. This style allows the audience to become completely captivated by the shows characters which is why we all love Beth or Rip or John or Lloyd. They are all so good!

In a very literal sense, the western defines who the United States is; where we came from, what our ancestors did, and how that influenced who we became and still are. While westerns are rare on TV these days, they live in the essence of the American heart. There is still a place for them and that place is largely open. In westerns the land is as much a character as the cast. I laud Sheridan Taylor for filming on location; the land’s character is then authentic. There is no mistaking the Trinity, the Brazos or Red River of Texas-they looked authentic because they were the real thing, though how cast and crew avoided rattlers and cottonmouths is a wonder. Now we’re seeing the dusty flat grasslands of the Indian Nations (Oklahoma) as it actually looks, complete with heat, bugs, winds and even tornadoes, in addition to Indians, rustlers and period correct intolerance of injustice. The only place it is off is of the morals and acceptability of certain things in those actual times, which would be considered racist or sexist by modern audiences. Other than those deliberate errors in social realities of the time, 1883 is a fantastic western and shows there remains a demand for the love of the Old West in the 21st century.

Yellowstone was permeated by the idea that the Dutton family would never relinquish their land in Paradise Valley. While, very generally, everybody can identify with the idea that any family would not readily give up the land of their fathers, now we are informed as to what the Dutton family gave up to acquire their ranch, and who was the first Duttton buried on that land.

As a living historian in North Texas I have mixed feelings about it. I disagree with the accuracy aspect. Some of the costume choices look like 20th century clothing altered to look old. That may have to do with the short notice they had to begin filming. Also some of the saddle and tack is off. I didnt like the cliche rifle with telescopic sight in the first episode either. While they did exist they were exceptionally rare and expensive. I wouldn't expect a farmer from Tennessee to own one as it would have probably cost more than his wagon. A seasoned buffalo hunter on the plains maybe. The biggest gripe is the date. 1883 in North Texas wasnt nearly that lawless and wild. The Comanche had been completely pushed out by that point as had most tribes. There was a huge boom in settlement through the 1870s in the area where they start out. If it were 1873 I could believe every bit of it. Another complaint I have is going to Oregon by way of Texas is about the worst way to do it, especially for a Tennessee family. What I do like is the set and dialogue. Its refreshing to see something that says its filmed in Texas that is actually the correct terrain and foliage. Many movies get that way wrong. Im betting this was filmed on Sherridan's ranches in Weatherford and Jacksboro. I also like the story and dialogue. I think the characters are interesting and performances are well delivered. I still love the show as well as Yellowstone. I just have to flip the historian switch off when I watch it but that's almost any film of that period.

I agree with most of your observations...Dallas/Fort Worth, that part of Texas was much more settled in 1883... 1873 would have been a more appropriate date. Also, the route they took, ugh. There were long established routes North out of Dallas, into the Indian Territories (Later Oklahoma), then, if headed West to Calif or Oregon, they'd have followed the route started by the Evans Party in 1849 that became known as the Cherokee Trail, west across Kansas Territory area to Bent's Fort, then north along the Front Range, passing what would become Denver, into Wyoming, then Westward again across the Red Desert there, then past Salt Lake area, eventually splitting Westward (Calif) /Northwest (Oregon) in N Nevada...

A major flaw to 1883 for me is at the start of the wagon train only one German immigrant spoke English. However, with each successive episode, everyone suddenly speaks English?? Overall, I am greatly enjoying the series and I compare it to Lonesome Dove.

Maybe they are from the Volga River Valley! German farmers from Russia settled in Eastern Washington in 1880s. Took train to Utah and then used wagons to get goods to WA. Don't about the gypsies. RH

Once out of town, and traveling across the country, I am sure the women shed their corsets, bloomers, other undergarments. I wouldn't be surprised if some women wore pants, riding boots, etc. Then once back in civilization, an outpost, a small town, farming community, such items were shed and back came the corsets, bloomers, etc. But while out in the wilderness... I doubt it. (Historical note: I researched and wrote a biography of a California Gold Rush pioneer who returned back east to Arkansas and Texas, married a rancher's daughter from northeast of Dallas - John Huffman's Fairview Ranch near McKinney, Tx -, then traveled with a mixed herd of cattle, horses, back to California via a route that was known as 'the Cherokee Trail' - all done during the early 1850s - thirty years before the time of this series' setting. There was nothing between Dallas/Ft Worth and Sacramento back then...except outposts, forts, SL City (town then.).

While you are half-correct about McGraw and Hill teaming up (it was the first production they were a couple in), they were also in a brilliant movie with one of the happiest endings ever, in Friday Night Lights. Both were in that movie, yet they were not a couple. Also, it has one of the best endings you could ever dream of: Permian Panthers losing.

You might like "open range" filmed in 2000 with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner. Very action packed movie depicting 1882.

@@glendaharris4904 Yes I agree. One of the greatest westerns m ade. Filmed in the vicinity of the Canadian ROCKIES ON LARGELY unspoiled native reservation land. The magnificent panoramas are reminiscent of Dances With Wolves.

I realize it's a show, but it's a show replete with historical inaccuracies and stuff that makes no sense. For example, no explanation is given on how or why the settlers showed up in Fort Worth. European migrants arrived in the U.S. on the eastern seaboard. By 1883, the Oregon Trail was well-travelled., and had bridged river crossings. Settlers from Europe travelled to Independence, MO, where the trail started, and followed it direct to Oregon. There's no logical reason for the settlers in the show to have first travelled southwest to Texas, a 1400 mile detour. Given their ineptitude at just about everything, how the heck did they make it from the east coast to Texas?
