For those complaining about him 'ruining' businesses: It's kind of like blaming an oncologist for 'failing' to help someone dying of cancer. @lelwut so if you have cancer there are basically two things you can do 1. Get a very harsh treatment and maybe die anyway 2. Don't get any treatment and definitely die. What is your immune system good for if you died from cancer? And how is the increased cancer risk an argument against treatment if you already.have.cancer? Or 3. spend your money on doctors on the internet who promise to cure your cancer with a healthy diet or even more stupid advises what basically is the same as number 2 but you don't only die you also get scammed. Sadly there is no real cure with a high success rate yet but that doesn't mean doctors don't try. They do everything they can. And scientists are doing research on how to cure cancer with some major steps lately. www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/revolutionary-cancer-therapy-yields-unprecedented-results/ www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/a-cancer-kill-switch-has-been-found-in-the-body-and-researchers-are-already-hard-at-work-to-harness-it/
@Hamsterdam915 жыл бұрын
@lelwut you know iflscience uses scientific papers for source? Beating cancer with a diet change is utterly bullshit. Where do you got this from? Belle Gibson? The women who sold a book, an app and ran a website about how she bet cancer with a healthy lifestyle change? Some news for you: She never had cancer in the first place. Those people are full of shit. But if you want to ignore peer reviewed science and rather believe some Internet-Doctors who provide zero evidence for their claims...

He never did ask Gordon, his was one of two places the producers approached, not the reverse. They saw an news piece on TV about a well known Cajun chef from Mississippi struggling to relocate after Hurricane Katrina and they approached him promising him to help him, including not changing the Cajun food, which they did anyways. In fact he had barely been open when they contacted him He had for many years (co-owned and head chef of) a successful place in Mississippi doing Cajun food, relocated to Tennessee after Katrina and reopened but on his own. The local Nashville food critic and online reviews at the time liked the food, and he actually was not lying about his crowds, which some journalists asked locals about and confirmed. In fact after the show he had two places, one in Mississippi and one in New Orleans, both praised for their foods and shut down due to financial mismanagement (though they had large crowds eating there). He seems to be an actually very good Cajun chef, just bad at finances and just unable to succeed without his former business partner who probably was the one who handled the money. And one of Ramsey's former producers admitted they deliberately overbooked him for the relaunched, deliberately created a menu they promised him they would not do, knowing it would fluster him for good TV, and much more. They admitted they approached a new place that had just relocated, and deliberately set it up to fail for good TV. I like Gordon, but after that episode and learning all that, I lost some respect for him, and all respect for his staff.

I've seen more than one owner complain the changes made by Gordon sank their businesses. Yeah, it's not the mountains of debt, your inability to lead, a volatile staff/work environment, or shitty food. It's the professional chef that came in and actually made your food palatable and your restaurant function correctly. These people still somehow think they know better than a man with decades of experience. If you revert back to your old ways once he leaves and then the restaurant sinks, it is your fault.

I've eaten at 7 of the place is Gordon helps, and I actually met Gordon at the taping of a Revisited episode. He is a genuine person, he's actually kind of quiet in person. The owner of the Fenwick Arms in England told me that most of the restaurants that sign up are already too far gone by the time he gets there.

A similar show once came to a really bad restaurant in my town and tried to help them. The main reason for the restaurant to flop was the unlikeable owner, he would shout at customers for not knowing whats good. Sooo i wasnt there at the reopening night but a week later, and he was very nice to everyone and the food was good. However it turned out he was letting his anger out on the chefs now. The chef who worked with the TV chef quit and another one was employed. The food was so bad afterwards that the owner started to shout at customers again. They had to close 3 months after the reopening. It isnt the TV chefs fault that the owners are stupid

You realize that an even higher percentage of restaurants that start up fail as a baseline rate? Not to mention that most of the restaurants in the show are already usually in debt and losing money. Making it FURTHER unlikely that they would succeed, even with intervention. The fact that 40% were even successful is a miracle.

Honestly a make over should be secondary priority, renovation is so friggin' expensive and if the restaurant themselves are the ones that will shoulder the renovation cost then it will just further bury them in the financial grave. I've seen the interiors of the featured restos at the start of every episodes and most of them are just fine, sure they are mediocre, but if you are really struggling then aesthetic overhaul should not be in your priority list. 1. Identifying the internal problem is the utmost priority, be it a poor organizational flow of managerial and operation process of the resto or the staffs themselves, it should be called out. 2. Changing/fixing the menu in order to win back and attract more customers.
@ironguanyin1236 жыл бұрын
@@rdu239 The restaurants don't need to pay it. It's paid for by the production team and advertisers on the show. Everytime Gordon's done a renovation he mentions the names of the kitchen equipment, cash register/ordering machine whatever, that promotes the products. Watch one episode again and you'll see that.

Just watching some highlights of Kitchen Nightmares on KZbin makes me understand why most of the restaurants ended up failing. A lot of the owners had no idea of what they are doing to begin with and fought with Gordon Ramsay.

The fact that is not scripted is remarkable, Gordan can only give advise to owners ,at the end of the day the owners are responsible, whether they follow or not and to maintain

They mentioned how many closed, but how many were sold, folded due to tax evasion, etc?
@caleblim68904 жыл бұрын
The problem is cost-cutting. The attention doesn’t last long, and all of Gordon’s revival methods are probably expensive as hell to maintain over long periods of time. Eventually it comes to a point where they just go back to the easiest option and revert to it. I’ll say the fact that Gordon managed to keep some restaurants open is great in of itself, and we have no way of knowing anyway why those restaurants shut down, it’s more than likely a handful of them faced problems not caused or not solved by Ramsay’s interventions. It was great fun to watch, and to imagine that some places managed to stay open is honestly pretty amazing.

Few comments. 1. 60% of restaurants closed? That's still a lot better than 100% failure rate if GR did nothing to try and help the restaurants. 2. Gordon Ramsay and Bear Grylls used to be my favorite TV celebs. Compared to how much Bear Grylls has turned into a show off and how much I used to like him, GR's mistakes and problems are nothing compared to Bear Grylls.

One-thing I could NEVER understand was the premise of the "re-launch". If the staff and owner were so dysfunctional how would you expect them to get trained on a brand-new menu and serve over a hundred guests in just one day? I have owned/managed restaurants and can say that's not realistic. Even with above-average chefs in the kitchen I would always perform a few days of training and a 'soft launch' to just friends, family and invited guests who understand that a free meal means they can't complain about the long wait or inconsistent dishes that were just learned. I am not saying they didn't pull it off, I just never understood why throw new babes (who are usually challenged) to the wolves.
@patrickkane936 жыл бұрын
wjatube Majority of these businesses were already on the verge of going under. Ramsey was a last attempt to patch leaking holes and turn things around. I agree it’s not very realistic to expect them to turn it around in a few days, but they would be out of business otherwise so it’s more unrealistic not to try to rebrand and correct all the mistakes they’re making.
@wjatube6 жыл бұрын
No doubt. My own experience is most restaurant owners survive (for as long as they do) through positive cash-flow regardless of profitability. Which is fine as long as they can withstand the normal lulls in business. Most US banks won't even accept a credit/loan application from a small restaurant owner given the high percentage of defaults. I have seen many owners play the 'shell game' with their food suppliers bouncing from one to another as their credit runs dry. While these companies will sue you they cannot close you down as fast as the tax-man with their enormous penalties and interest start racking-up the shut-down is inevitable. By the time a turn-around expert gets involved (I agree) it's usually too late as even a 25% boost in sales isn't enough to cover mounting tax debts. I feel bad for these owners as I've seen many of them personally lose their homes and marriages over these closures.

I always wondered if it's true this ALL happens in 1 day.
@Cheepchipsable6 жыл бұрын
Because they want to create drama. The producers want something to go wrong so they can make a comeback at the end. There was an episode where the chef walked out in the middle of service and Gordo gets on the phone and has an award winning chef down there in minutes to take over... who believes that? I've always wondered why the first step wouldn't be to just keep most of their menus and make them fresh. A lot of the places the staff wasn't a major problem, just key people who should have known better. Does it really matter to a server what dish they are asking the chef to cook?
@OgawaBurukkuART6 жыл бұрын
wjatube I would suspect that there is a lot more training going on and the show edits it out. I think they film for a week but each episode feels like just one or two days. I think what we see is the first couple of days and then the last day, and not so much the in between stuff (where, no doubt, Ramsay is gone and lets his staff do the grunt work). The lack of a trial with friends is probably because there is a time restraint and a full reopening offers more drama.

To be fair, most of the owners and chefs on the UK version weren't as arrogant, deluded, or rude as they were in US version. Look at the "worst" examples from both shows, there's no comparison.
