I’ve been on a Cars binge lately and can’t believe how young Benjamin was when he passed away - he seemed like a gentle soul, more so than the average “rocker”. I could be wrong but he was and will always be my favorite. Funny how when I was little I didn’t realize there were two singers, and when I did figure it out it I realized the popular flashy ones I liked (and were popular) in jr high and high school were sung by Rick, but the ones that stuck with me all these years and will always be in my memory are sung by Benjamin.

@rickr20295 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree about Orr and Ocasek’s voices sounding similar. Very easy to tell them apart. Orr’s has a nice range, clear and refreshing tone. Ocasek on the other hand, has an interesting unique “dopey” quality. Very suitable for what was known as New Wave at the time. Orr could do Justice with “Any” of the songs that Ocasek sang but the same cannot be said for Ocasek covering a song for example as “All I can Do”. It wouldn’t work. However, it is such a loss to lose a genius in Ocasek. A class act, pioneer, and a revolutionary in his craft. The Cars had/have some of the best “Feel Good” of all time and it is to the credit of this beloved man.

Yeah, I agree. I was shocked when the narrator stated that Ric and Ben sounded like each other when they sang. Personally, I don't think voices are completely different, and one could easily tell them apart. Ben's voice is much more technically sound than Ric's voice. Ben also has a lot more range in his voice as opposed to Ric's voice.

It's weird I never new back in late 70s there were 2 singers but all the songs that were my favorite were sung by ORR. Just something different about his voice that made the song more haunting in a way. Still respect RIC for writing the songs but damn just loved Ben's voice. RIP Ben and Rick.

Benjamin could've dashed in the early days of The Cars and make a career on his own. But two things didn't go his way : songwriting wasn't his thing (Ric wrote practically all of The Cars Songs) and he was a way too loyal friend to Ric. Benjamin had everything: a melodic and beautiful voice, the whole rock star look nailed down, stage presence and played a cool bass... It's also said he was very shy and reserved, he had self-esteem issues due to the fact that he didn't finished school (dropped out in the 11th grade) and that his smoking and drinking escalated after his relationship with Diane failed (his songwriting girlfriend and whom he called true love). Also it's said, that after the Cars broke up and after he had his chance to record on his own, the fact that music industry wasn't signing soft rock artists was another downer In Benjamin's life. But he kept going despite so many downturns, he played small venues in his native Ohio with a band he had in the mid and late 90s. It's so sad to know he died of pancreatic cancer due to his smoking. Such a promising artist if he had have more exposure early on. RIP Benjamin and Ric.
@karijozsa96798 ай бұрын
Drinking AND smoking are contributing factors to pancreatic cancer. My Mother passed from it. Very good insight. I loved being a teen/young adult in the 90’s, but The Cars were my favorite as a child. A small part of me wishes I could have been a teen in the late 70’s, and saw them live after Candy O. Ben’s songs (sang) are my favorite ever.

Not when you’re 14 or and had it , the LP , for the first time in 78’ then Candy O comes out in 79’ and saw em on their first arena tour , first tour that combined half of their debut LP and half off Candy O with Nick Lowe opening up at the San Diego Sports Arena , only then did we even care as we didn’t pay attention until live in concert and saw Orr take over the first of 14 songs and 1 encore , 1.5 total time on stage if that ? Then we saw Candy O tour in about less than a year , then Panorama in 81 with The Motels all in San Diego and maybe 1 hour 15 minutes Panorama concert , fans were bent then we knew it was how the Cars rolled , they HATED live performances and Ric says so in many magazines and interviews where in the studio they “ were geeks with perfection “ - Greg Hawkes . Way to technical and quirky along with Rics shut in approach and Robinson’s bored look every time you seen him live or live clip , look at EE’s bio and he was the opposite always wanting to play live and long , same with Ben but they just couldn’t pull off the studio sound that my favorite Band of ALL - TIME wanted to give us , but it just never sounded the same , ever out of the studio versus today with auto tune on everywhere and no real talent any longer out there that Rivals the 70s - 80s punk / rock genre , you’ll never ever see this again and instead they push freaks at us now ... nope no new music here since Avenged 7Fold in 2013 and before that , nothing but memories and good ones . Nightspots You can’t hold on too long Almost ALL of Heartbeat City Cruiser Don’t tell me Know Other cuts Too difficult to bring that studio sound back in the day and even in the 87’ Door to Door with Strap Me in or Double Trouble was a tough sound to bring with Eastons solos had no edge live imo . And they had Roy Thomas Baker make em famous recording that debut LP in the UK . We Just wanted a better live show and was let down in live vs studio versions and the play lists . IMO . Cars videos were clearly the major thrust for their success. They were a perfect marriage for their music with a visual that took their tunes to a whole new level. The Cars videos were fun and not as overly thought out as say Michael Jackson's or other artists but rather their videos whether it be the fun ones or the serious "Drive" all perfectly complimented their music. In the Cars case, they were brilliantly served by their record company, video directors and management because they never made a bad video and every video was right for their music. Early MTV and the Cars were a match made in heaven.

That next day though seriously finding an album or cassette was a scavenger hunt. Hearing they have been a sellout today, really was even more alluring. Knowing every one sold more than likely was there and the Cars were going to be big. Thank you so much for the blast. Have a wonderful time in life, your a very kind person!

@@JudasPriest82 Meant to say also I was off on my year. I thought we had seen them before we both graduated. He had, I hadn't. Got it half right. Sorry if that made it harder. Btw how did you finally run into it. You must be a Cars super fan yourself... Obviously. Again thank you! "Let The Good Times Roll"

@Moon Goddess I Googled it as much as I could and then I'd finally just went to a set list website typed in The Cars Oklahoma, they played here more than a few times after the show you went to, and so sorry to hear about your husband that's terrible but kudos to him Cindy O is clever, I'll think of that everytime I listen to that song from now on, I'm only 29 years old and the Cars are my favorite band right now, I'm doing so much research on them it's unbelievable

The day before he died I was driving with my daughter and she asked if I had heard of "The Cars" and asked to play one of their songs over my car stereo. I said of course I know them, I love 80s bands. And then played some more of their music from my playlist. And the next day, RIP.

Ric Ocasek lived on North High Street in Columbus Ohio near The Ohio State University Campus in the late 60's and was actually very popular in the small night clubs here! He was a mainstay at The Agora and when he hit the big Time with the Cars it was no real surprise as most of us figured something big was gonna happen for Ric....I'm one of the lucky ones who got to see him Before Fame came a calling!

Phew, I"m so relieved this vid isn't some mud-slinging expose. Ric Ocasek seems like a good sort of guy who just wanted to make fun, challenging ,pop music with his buds. He was probably the last person to think The Cars would make minor music history, but they did, and I'm thankful for that. The Cars were great, no arguing that, and I hope people continue to pick up on their irresistible popn/new wave/art rock sensibility. They were eclectic, eccentric, fashionable and fun, and the indie kids are still scratching their heads to this day as to how they (the Cars) got those killer guitar tones on the first album.

Carol Canuso I remember not having cable, and all the kids at school talking bout music videos on MTV. I envied in jealousy and hate. And would cry to my parents “I want my MTV”!! Two month later for my birthday I had MTV. Mom and Dad had already planned on getting it way before all my crying. They just wanted to surprise me. Best birthday everrr. Like totally.

this biased video was likely another RO promo. If a betting person, I would bet money he produced it and approved every word of it with instructions for date-of-death content to be added upon his passing. THAT is how much of a control freak RO was. btw, that blonde dude sloppily sucking tongue with a girl was NOT Benjamin Orr. It was an actor used for the "Hello Again" video Andy Warhol also appeared. Figured I'd add this obvious fact, as so many are unable to distinguish the absolute and many differences between Orr and Ocasek's voices. The force and direction of all The Cars marketing and promotion was to establish to the viewer that "The Cars and Rick Ocasek are one in the same" and nobody else in the band mattered enough to be promoted. Ric O was savvy and an imaginative writer of some great songs. His biggest talent was self-promotion.

I never considered you The Dangerous Type, so I decided- Let's Go for a Drive, as it was Just What I Needed. It's All I Can Do, now Since You're Gone. But when I turned on the radio, it was Magic to feel the Good Times Roll once again. I looked at this surreal situation with Stranger Eyes. The music fully enveloped me while cruising down the highway, it was like Moving In Stereo, but my Emotion In Motion still made it Touch and Go. You Might Think, I am All Mixed Up, but right now, You're All I've Got Tonight, so I just want to Shake It Up one last time before saying to you- Bye Bye Love. :( :(
