As a pastor's daughter, I think the temptation for pastors the band together against criticism is one of the biggest tools for the enemy to deceive. This is why the Bible speaks so much of humility, and relying on him to not be put to shame. It's tough being criticized, but when you allow at pain to cause you to walk away from Orthodox teachings, and align yourself with a false teacher simply because he shows you sympathy, you're no longer just a person in pain, you're a person who's made an idol out of pain relief. I also think it's a lesson to those of us who criticize in a personal way, and not on a purely Orthodox, biblical basis. It doesn't excuse the response, but I do think we should watch our p's and q's more. But ultimately, the choice to walk away from Orthodoxy was primarily fueled by pride and self defensiveness.

These people avoid the Gospel, twist scripture, and are obsessed with experiences vs. actually teaching the Bible to their congregations. At 7:08 Chan talks about asking Bill why didn't he defend himself against attacks on him and that Bill said, "because the spirit told me not to". This sums up the entire problem with Chan right here. Instead of asking Bill how do you know that it was the spirit talking to you he just accepted that Bill believed that it was and therefore it must have been. Hard to believe a graduate of TMS has strayed so far from God's word to this touchy, feels right, way of assuming he's being lead by the Lord. Sad.

Francis needs discernment. Paul was not hesitant to call out false teachers-- and in fact did so according to the Spirit and what is godly and right to do. Simply knowing scripture is not an indication that someone is saved. Even Satan himself and fellow demons know scripture -- sometimes better than we do! This is why we need to judge things according to it and to seek discernment of spirits - testing all things by God's Word. And if a man claims to be a prophet of God and speaks as though God has given him direct revelation, and yet those revelations do not come to pass or are shown to be wrong or are in disagreement with scripture, that man is to be marked and disregarded as a prophet of God - and to also be put outside of the Church so that he might repent and be brought back to the truth. This is so sad to see and I will be praying for Francis and for all who are being deceived.

We do not "build" God's will - but rather He works His will in and through us and builds His kingdom accordingly. And yes, I am a witness for Christ and it is therefore vital that I know who He is, what He desires, and that I understand and apply His word correctly.

Joshua Mcmanus I suppose I was responding to a rather unclear question and I should have instead asked for clarification. You asked, “what is truth?“ Followed by “and does it build Gods (sic) kingdom and his will?“ Are you then asking if truth builds God’s kingdom and his will? If so, I believe my response is still sufficient in that truth is not an object or an idea but rather the person of Christ. But in any event, it’s a rather confusing question to begin with and I would need clarification. I don’t spend much time engaging in conversations online, however, because they aren’t really conversations- at least not in the way conversation is intended to be and rarely with any fruitful outcome. I would refer you to the best source for the answer to your question: the Bible and sincere prayer.

Rebecca Lynn your right it is unclear and I am sorry that you don’t have a lot of experience online it is saddening though that your comment was so hurtful If you don’t talk online very often. I mean seriously what did Bill Johnson do to you? Did he kill your cat? Those people that are supposedly mislead are following what they believe the Bible portrays Jesus as who am I to get in their way and say bad things I mean in Sunday school people are taught W.W.J.D. So in saying that yes Jesus threw out the people selling which you could say Bethel does that and it would be true they do sell stuff in the temple but I would argue it has Gods word associated with it and Gods words a.k.a Gospel brings light it’s in the first chapters of John you also find love there the lady who was in adulterous woman was told he who is without sin cast the first stone and all the Pharisees walked away leaving Jesus and the adulterous woman and Jesus said go free and sin no more . So my whole point is he showed love Paul said these these three remain faith hope and love. The greatest is love. So since Jesus is the truth the way and the light no one shall come to the father except through me he later says in John ch.14 that he is sending another the helper which is the Holy Spirit which gives the gift of love which at the end of Matthew 28:16-20 talks about the great commission which is to build Gods kingdom by going out into the world and preaching the gospel now what Bill preaches is sound for the most part where doctrine differs for me is the apostolic teaching and to that we can go back and forth all day if there are still apostles today which is neither here nor there the point is what if Bill Johnson and bethel are right your a Christian won’t you have to live in heaven with him the rest of your life and you said mean things about him.

Francis is the furthest from a downward spiral. I think he is opening his spiritual eyes even more than ever and valuing the unity in the body than allowing the differences in theology to divide something beautiful that could happened by coming together despite the differences. We need to stop judging other people’s relationship with the Lord or focusing on whose theology is right and start valuing one another believing that we all can bring the gospel to the nations when we partner up. Dear Brother Francis, the problem with Bethel and Bill Johnson isn’t merely speaking in tongues or prophecy. From Scripture we know that visions, prophecy, tongues and other spiritual gifts are given to the church for her edification, so you are right to repent for not believing the Word of God. However, there is a very clear distinction between what Scripture teaches us about spiritual gifts and what Bill Johnson and Bethel do. You cannot endorse a group that twists and misuses Scripture, teaches heresy, FALSE prophecy and worst of all NEW AGE philosophy! Just because they seem nice doesn’t mean they are of God. You should have listened to the people who begged you not to join them.

JohnHerrin22 I did read it. It was a very interesting read. Just so you don’t assume I myself sit in an a unique position because I live 30 min. From Redding, CA. With that being said I do not attend Bethel I have gone a few times. Enough to know that some of that article can be called hear-say over heresies of what Bill Johnson has said . The other is I actually attend an AG church that because of associations in name with bethel they changed their name back before I attended the church. Now with that being said Bethel has done Good in this area now not that everything they teach I agree with but just because you disagree does not make it wrong just means you don’t understand. I don’t understand all of Gods sovereignty I don’t understand why the Catholic Church did what we call grave sucking. I don’t understand God’s omnipresence. Just because I don’t know about it does not mean that it is wrong. Now that I’ve said that also don’t see how that proves Bill Johnson is a wolf?

After listening it seems that sincerity and a compassionate spirit are being raised above what the others on the Zoom call actually teach. Kenosis being preached by Bill is one reason alone to deny everything they come from his mouth. If Christ was not Divine as God while He walked in his early ministry, He is incapable of saving anyone from their sins on the cross. Mike Bickle admitting some 80% of prophetic word he hears are completely false (audio/ video of his remarks contextually found readily online) tells me they have the success rate of some lady on a street corner reading palms or practicing tarot. Why? Because they partake of the same spirit of error. Chan, you are better than this! Be a Berean and study as to why people critique these ministries. We take no glory and honor in doing so as any one of us are susceptible of falling into pockets of deceit.

It is good that Mr. Chan has repented of his arrogance. I came from the same "camp" as Francis Chan, & had the same teachers, and I certainly knew there were "Charismatic theologians." Who wouldn't know that? We read them. Some were quite able. Maybe he was just a poor student, or maybe he is being disingenuous here. He certainly is gullible. These NAR folks don't respond to critics because their doctrines are indefensible, not because the Spirit told them not to. What a lame excuse.

The elephant in the room of all these discussions in Cessationism. Being a cessationist is close to being an atheist. In order for the atheist to claim there is no God, that person would have to claim “I have gone back to the beginning of time and I have travelled beyond time and discovered there is no afterlife and I have walked throughout all the ages and therefore I declare by virtue of personal discovery there is no God.” Same for the cessationist: You have declared that you know for a fact that there have been no miracles, no expression of the gifts of the spirit since the apostolic age because you have personally walked into all scenarios across all the centuries and all cultures and countries and can conclude, “yep, it all ceased!” I constantly can’t get why anyone would ever want cessationism? This is beautiful. This is what the character of God looks like. A man couldn't do this without the Spirit of God. A man can know the bible front to back and also do many signs a wonders; but still be a child of Satan. But someone walking in the character of God continually shows who his Farther is.
