Life with a new puppy is not all Instagram cuteness and squishy faces. There is a lot of standing outside in the pouring rain at 3am waiting for the puppy to perform, not to mention the amount time taken just trying to do the everyday chores!
Normally at this time of the year we go down to one video a fortnight, but so many of you asked to be kept up to date with Ted's progress, I made this little update vlog.
Things are going fairly well, with the major exception of one huge meltdown!
Here is the ONLY puppy training video you'll need on KZbin, conveniently broken down in to useful chapters:
• Puppy Training - What...
TECHY STUFF
Main video filmed on a Sony A7C, B roll on an iPhone 11Pro Max.

Why did you Andrew get another puppy when Dougal is in good health? I do not agree with your ideas at all. And why call him Ted? Surely a Scottish name like Mac would have been more appropriate. You should have waited until Dougal passed, before getting a replacement. You are not thinking now on how Dougal a life long companion will think when you bring another dog to compete with. I think you have now lost the plot. I visited North Uist for a week's holiday in summer and what a miserable place with wind and inclement weather to live. Why you chose this location in your closing years to live takes some understanding. All weather low pressures arriving across the Atlantic generally end up skirting the Western Isles, with horrendous wind and rain or snow. Having lived in the Highlands this is the last place I would want to live. My home was on the east coast just north of Inverness on the Black Isle. A comfortable haven with amenities on my doorstep. Yes it had bad weather, but nothing like North Uist.

Phillip Richardson, how DARE you judge someone else. How DARE you decide where someone should or shouldn't live? I believe you should take a long hard look in the mirror and keep your opinion to yourself you miserable man. Genuinely the human race baffles me. Andrew, I enjoy your videos and so does my Fiancée. We enjoy watching you live your life how you choose to do so. We enjoy seeing Ted and Dougal slowly come to terms with one another. Please keep doing exactly what you want to do as no one can or should tell you what to do.

North uist is beautiful, I can completely understand you wanting to live there. I had a wonderful time in the outer Hebrides. I do not think anybody has the right to be rude about your decisions. It's your life. It sounds like a person who either enjoys putting others down or is jealous. Take no notice , they are not worth your time. Xx

You must have a real skill communicating with dogs... every time you called "Ted" in the video my border terrier, who is also called Ted, sat inquisitively in front of the telly and gave you his undivided attention... which is more than he usually decides to give me!!! 🙂... it's great to see how your Ted is getting on and all yours and Dougal's hard work will be be so worth it in the end 👍

Well Philip Richardson what a sad life you have. I have been lucky to have had the delight of owning several dogs over 40 years and Andrew pleased by assured that having a puppy with Dougal is perfect. Dogs are pack animals and they love being together and they bring so much joy to one another as well as to us their owners. As for your comments Philip regarding North Uist are unkind as it is a beautiful, friendly Island. Andrew and Dougal congratulations on your new little family addition. Looking forward to many more interesting and informative videos.

Hi Andrew, my wife follows you for the camping and caravan stuff, I became interested when Ted came along. I was surprised that some people said you had shortened Dougals life by getting Ted. I'd have to say I totally disagree with that. I have been around dogs all my life, my father had lots of labradors and I have had 5 border collies over the last 30 years. I have introduced puppies to older dogs on more than one occasion, some nearing the end of life. It is my firm belief that the pups had a positive impact on the older dogs, in almost every case giving a new lease of life to the older companions in my life. Enjoy your pups and take care. Regards Stewart Coombs.

Many thanks Stewart. When I was a child, we had an old 15 year old rescue mongrel and my parents got a Dobermann puppy. As you say, he gave the old dog a new lease of life and he carried on until he was 19. But hey, the there will always be people with closed minds and open mouths, it's the way of the world. Thanks for watching, all the best.

I got a Puppy which has made my older dog (she's a rescue so we think she is about 9 years old) more active because she has someone to play and run around with. It was a tough 2 years to raise a Puppy (Mini Australian Shepherd) but would never look back as he is a great dog that loves my other dog and cat. Luckily, when it came to Potty training he picked up rather quickly. It wasn't easy going out in the snow @ 10 at night but it didn't last long. The key is to praise the dog during training when they do something right! That worked well with my dog. Ted is doing very well for his age, it's not all rosy but in the end well worth it. Nothing better than having a dog, a companion for life!

Have you lost your mind?? He is a Jack Russell and he has Dougal to teach him the way of the Doggo. NO SMILING. Ha ha ha. In all other respects, Ted is an amazing pupil and you have the soft voice and oodles of patience to make it all work. Good luck with his teenage time, stubbornness is a Terrier. Can't wait for all the updates of Dougal leading Ted astray and you trying to figure out how Ted knew that. Many hugs, Karen 😁🧡🧡🧡

And their training is not only important for our sakes but for theirs too as they enjoy it and it helps them to socialise with other beings of all kinds. I've always offset my dogs, 1 older and 1 younger. I find the older dog helps with training the younger one, and the younger one engages the older dog in play. I believe having a younger dog keeps the older dog healthy and active longer.

We started years ago to house train or White Newfoundland puppy, starting in November all through winter my poor husband had do get up at night twice at least. Finally in February during really harsh weather and snow falling all night my dh decided as the dog started to wince that he would rather clean the mess than getting up. And guess what - nothing happened. The next day my husband told me that he had a feeling for some days that the dog was like - ok if it makes you happy I'll join you in the middle of the night although I'd rather sleep. A clear misinterpretation of needs 🤣🤣🤣

Hari OM 😍💞🐾🐾🐾🐾 Doing really well, Andrew, Dougal and Ted! It is so easy to forget how much work is involved in raising a puppy - and all too often folk fall for the cute and forget there is a living breathing poop machine that needs entertainment, discipline and feeding! I liken a puppy to raising a toddler - aside from the language, there is little difference. Including that sleep deprivation!!! It's clear that Dougal is starting to accept that the wee tyke is a permanent fixture, which is grand, too. Thanks for sharing them with us Andrew - they are as much a part of your vanning life as your other reports. YAM xx

I thoroughly enjoy your videos - on all subjects - and most heartily laughed at the comment Ted cried for hours! My puppy I put into her crate for bedtime (I would do it differently now that I know better) I covered the crate and went to bed......gave up at the howling and came down, I gave her a t shirt I'd worn, no difference, she wanted to be BE with me. After 3 months of sleeping on the sofa next to the crate of fidgeting and crying puppy, I gave up and took her upstairs. Instant happiness! For both of us. I do believe that she thinks she is either my twin or that she is entitled to get what I have and do. She is now 9 1/2. I understand your actions with regard to Ted. I also believe you will and are doing what you can to be inclusive and yet teach Ted that Dougal is top dog. Well done and wishing you all many more happy times together.

I've just watched this before heading to bed, and I can honestly say it's made my day! Ted is simply adorable, and Dougal is managing most magnificently with having his peace and serenity up-ended by the bundle of cuteness that is Ted! I am so looking forward to the next episode of the Ted, Dougal and Andrew show!! xx

That was a joy to watch. I grew up on a working sheep farm and of course, we had working sheep dogs (border collies). You spoke a lot of sense Andrew and as far as I can see, you are doing a wonderful job. My brother (who know farms) has two dogs he works together. One responds to English commands and the other to Welsh commands as they need instruction quickly to get the dog to move in the right direction. Your system of 'name-command' works well too of course and oddly, some people get very annoyed if you speak to a dog in a different language so I think you have the right system going there. You very rightly say that each dog is different and each set of circumstances and therefore the solution will be different and your track record with Dougal is exemplary!

Many thanks Andrew. I did consider making Ted a Gaelic speaker, but remained mindful that if he ever stayed with friends or with my mum, they would be giving commands in English. Cheers.

Such cutie pies! Ted is a proper puppy :D From experience, when you have an old dog, or a sick one, if you get a puppy, then the other one will brighten up and get the energy back suddenly. It is the push to live further which is an amazing thing. So enjoy the company of both, you three are a great family! :)

You've achieved so much so soon with Ted Andrew. It's been many years since I went to dog training(to train me not the dog)!! I also remember the lost sleep and my half asleep trips in terrible weather to toilet train my little terror so I sympathize with you. All of course worth it in the end.Thank you for keeping us posted Andrew. You have two such lovely dogs and of course I'm absolutely not jealous in any way whatsoever.....LOL.

We always remember the ups and few of the downs of puppy time. I must admit I was SO lucky that my dog slept all night and from the first night she arrived. I can’t claim that was down to me, she just likes sleeping. Ted looks like he’s coming along fine. He looks like he might be a smiler too 😊

I can’t believe that someone would be so callous as to suggest that by getting a puppy you shorten the older dogs life that’s just nuts. Our dog was only 3 when we introduced a puppy to him it didn’t go so well to start with but they are the best of friends now. Enjoyed the vlogs keep up the updates and even the odd caravan video 🤔😂😂

You are doing a great job by the looks of it. The comments from people about bringing Ted in being detrimental to Dougal are nonsense. I have done exactly the same thing four times with my Labradors and in each case it has had a really positive effect on the older dog. I discovered clicker training with the latest one and found this to be a considerable improvement for the first 18 months of his training. You should be proud of what you have achieved in the short time you have had them together. Two very lucky dogs, well done

Thank you for this lovely update. Ted ist so tiny. And Dougal seems to think 'I have to accept it, it seems not to go away. Well than'. It's so lovely. And you're really brave, facing the weather in the middle of the night. Knowing, that it gets worse if you don't.

Things will be fine, it just takes a few weeks. When we went from one dog to two Shep was about 3 years old and had been an only dog for 15 months after joining us from a rescue centre. He was amazingly patient with my daughter's springer spaniel puppy (our first ever puppy as we had always had older rescue dogs) that pestered him for hours. He would play with him for a time but when Charlie got to be too much Shep would just pin him to the floor with a very big border collie paw. 12 months later my other daughter rescued Sweep, a collie/whippet cross, and Shep had it all over again but he was fine. All of the dogs learnt from each other. While this was going on we had the cat who lived there first and he bossed all 3 of them around. If he wanted a particular seat he would bat the dog off it and settle down like a king.
