I respect the MILF over the Abu Sayaff. The MILF fought for justice, equality, and muslim independence while the Abu Sayaff were just thieves. Fast forward to 2023, the ASG is largely gone and the MILF is now friends with the government -- now acting as a policing force in central Mindanao.. The military too has gone a long way, from being a feared organization in the 1990s to being the country's #1 most trusted government agency. The Philippines has a gone a long way!

I was in Zamboanga from late 2001 to mid 2002 and flew to Basilan on the downed Chinook (Wild 42) the night it crashed. I deplaned at Zamboanga before it began its return to Mactan following aerial refueling. The focus of our mission there was to train Phil forces to operate at night. Abu Sabaya was eliminated by AFP in June 2002 -- at night. I like to think my brothers didn't die in vain, and the PI is better for it.

But I didn't realize how bad it really was until I joined he US ARMY and later got stationed in the same unit as those Team Guys in the video and having been deployed to the PI myself and seeing it first hand... its far more worse and complicated than what the documentary reveals it to be and thats all I can say about that. .... I would like to share some important information about the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the perspectives of fellow Filipinos. The desire for peace is universal, particularly among the unarmed civilians residing in BARMM who unequivocally reject violence. However, we must never forget that we are the Republic of the Philippines, a nation that our heroes such as Jose Rizal, Bonifacio, and many others fiercely fought for and sacrificed their lives to establish. We have a constitution and a set of laws that should be upheld. To achieve lasting peace in our country, we must prioritize the principles of law and order. There should be no exemption or immunity for those who commit crimes, particularly acts related to terrorism, murder, and drugs. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) represents only one group among the diverse population of the Philippines, and the peace talks provided them with a unique opportunity to pursue a new life. It is not the Philippines that should express gratitude to the MILF; rather, it is the MILF that should be appreciative of the Philippines for granting them the chance for a fresh start. It is crucial to acknowledge that there are millions of struggling Filipinos, while the number of MILF members in the country is relatively small. The Philippine government has already extended significant support, including an 80 billion black grant, along with funds from the national government derived from the taxes paid by Filipino citizens. These initiatives demonstrate that the Philippines is committed to promoting equality and fairness, regardless of an individual's religious or cultural background. Our only request is for murder cases to be thoroughly investigated and for those involved in criminal activities to face appropriate consequences. It is imperative that their firearms be decommissioned and surrendered, and the use of funds allocated to the MILF to acquire new weapons be strictly prohibited. These funds are intended to benefit the Muslim and Christian residents of BARMM, such as farmers, equipment provision, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, livelihood initiatives, and most importantly, the welfare of the members themselves. Furthermore, I would like to clarify that the MILF does not pose a threat to the Philippines as they represent a relatively small group. They were a domestic problem that was nearly eradicated during President Estrada's tenure. Although the MILF was previously associated with various criminal activities, the initiation of peace talks reflected the nation's desire for reconciliation among fellow Filipinos. They were given the opportunity to surrender and embrace a peaceful path, despite lacking resources such as airplanes, fighter jets, artillery, or tanks, as our Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) maintains superior capabilities. The objective was to improve the circumstances for Muslim MILF members and allow them to start anew. It is my hope that they integrate well into society and responsibly utilize the provided funds. Let us always remember that we are not alone as Filipinos, and there are many of our compatriots who are enduring hardship. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the law, and the funds allocated to the MILF should be utilized to support and uplift their fellow Filipinos. Thank you sincerely, and may God bless us all with peace!
@robdahobbit1418
@robdahobbit1418 Жыл бұрын
True peace is the goal, in your statement you do not mention why these small groups started? If they murder, rape and commit crime then what of the military that does the same? To honor and respect the law and the constitution the military and police forces must treat people with dignity, fairness and honor in order for the people to respect and honor the law and the constitution. Is the Philippine govt democratic? If so then is it not democratic to allow a region to be autonomous as its inhabitants wish for? As you stated from past hero's that were instrumental in orchestrating events that eventually formed a united nation called the Philippines, what did they do to achieve that? Definitely not peacefully, they used tactics which when suits a govt, calls terrorism. To win the hearts and minds of civilians you must not commit atrocities, you must not arrest individuals without cause and you must be neutral from ideological, and political agendas. So far in this article it appears there is strong evidence that the military and authorities in those areas are profiting from the groups. You say the military has superior capabilities but over 6000 troops could not contain the group even with U.S help, why? I will tell you why, it is due to the military committing acts contrary to God's will. Forcing people to confess under duress is not God's way whether Christian or Muslim. Treating people humanely will win their support, not treating them humanely will turn them against you. Why is there so much poverty in the Philippines? Because your democratic govt and regional politicians are corrupt even to this day, why is there no free health care, why is there no pention for retirees except for govt workers? And don't tell me I am wrong or know nothing of the Philippines as many friends of mine are filipino having served with some in the 90's and my fiancee is filipino. This could be why groups push for autonomy. Some govts like the U.S create terror groups in order to topple govts that won't bow down to their will. Saddam Hussein, Panama, Granada as examples. ISIS, the mujahadeen is afghanistan and countless other groups financed and armed by democratic govts for political agendas but when these govts renege on their promises the groups turn against them. The U.S promised the Kurds to help with their own state if they help fight ISIS, they did and the U.S back tracked and now allows Turkey to strike them at will. The MILF in my view continue to be armed and strong for the simple reason that your govt and military can not be trusted to act humanely or within the constitution unless the constitution allows for govt sanctioned killing, torture and corruption.

Phil military now is much professional and soldiers now a days are highly educated unlike before because now you must finish a 4 years college course before you will be just qualified to train then afterwards the process of selection is hard and long also our military now is much more conservative in terms of human rights and soldiers now are more disciplined and respectful not as barbaric as before, and the corruption now is very low and minimal in the military and our military now is much organizer and every weapons and ammunition that goes out the bases were monitored and soldiers now don't have the reason to do bad things because their salary is much higher than before

Education does not guarantee a professional soldier, ever wonder what causes a lot of the worlds problems, educated people do. Look at the state the world's economy is at. Controlled by educated people and yet many countries face recession and war. The ordinary person just wants to live a comfortable life having a job that will pay for food, power and school with good health. If educated people are the answer then realistically there should not be poverty and war. Even the most well paid organisations has corruption to some level simply for the fact they are manned by people and there is always some who want more.

The efforts of US spec ops to train and materially support the Philippine anti-terror forces that resulted in the creation of AFPSOCOM, the LRR and the strengthening of 1stSR and SFR is much appreciated. Basilan is now a lot peaceful as the bulk of the Abu Sayyaf from the island pretty much went down in flames in 2017 during its failed attempt to set-up a branch of the so called islamic caliphate in mainland Mindanao in Marawi. Then Gov. Akbar died in a car bombing just outside the building of the Philippine Congress in 2007, the MILF has signed a peace agreement with the Philippines government in Malaysia in 2014 and is now pretty much focused in peace and development efforts while running the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao under the agreement.

I am from new Zealand and live in Australia and yes even through we had great brave men that fought in WW2 he is correct the Japanese would have taken over our part of the world if not for American military power . Even the Eruopean war may have had a different out come if they had not been involved It does NOT mean our troops were less than they definitely were a great fighting force but the USA had the bigger population and resources . Remember the US was helping with money /equipment even before they entered the war that helped Britain and her allies keep fighting on both fronts

Poverty can create a new generation of bandits. No matter which movement; combination of politics and poverty means war, it needs both ingredients. The muslims in the southern Philippines were robbed from their land by christians. When you are a young muslim man living among cristians and living under christian rule you will likely be oke with that when your life is good.....add poverty to that and you have war/banditry or an awkward combination of those two. Almost all wars in past and present are caused by poverty and something else (like ethnic/religious diversity etc).
