Wah Chang (special effects guy) designed the original Romulan Bird of Prey. He also did other stuff for Star Trek like the communicator, salt vampire and tribbles. He was a non-union contractor so they had to return the model to him after they filmed The Balance of Terror. He thought it was a one off, so he threw it out. The people running the show went back to Chang to get the model for this episode, but he no longer had it. That's why they had to put the Romulans in Klingon ships.

Judging by Mr. Spock saying the Romulan Commander told him the Romulan’s sensors could not track the Enterprise, it seemed like she knew all along Captain Kirk and crew would successfully escape and they did. They could have been beamed back onboard the flagship at the same time they got Spock off, that would have avoided any charge of hostage taking by the Romulans in the aftermath (not that they didn't have bigger things to complain about.) The practical reason was the original Romulan BOP was lost/damage/destroyed. In ST universe there is canon information that states the Klingons and Romulans had a brief alliance which technology was shared. Thus the swap was Romulan Cloaking Tech for D7 battle-cruiser Tech. This was somewhat ret-con'd with the original story of ST III and the BOP used in the film was originally to be the replacement/upgrade for the Romulan BOP from the TOS era and it was stolen by the Klingons as a tech grab for both ship design and cloak tech. However this ST III TSS back story was scraped and the B'rel call BOP was simply the scout class on the Klingon fleet line. While this last comment is conjecture I think the ST III TSS ret-con idea was the better one as you notice its the first time the "green" hull/armor color scheme was in place and this was after ST I TMP with upgraded D7 to the K'tinga for the Klingons with standard no pant gray/sliver hull color, Thus I think the "green" hull/armor color scheme was the start for the Romulan color scheme we see afterwords, in addition until ST III TSS only the Romulans in lore had the BOP type/class ship and it follows their style of small strong strike craft not heavy class navy like the Klingons.

Within the first five seconds after jumping to warp 9, the Enterprise would have traveled approximately 677,970,000 miles. The Romulan sub-commander did not began pursuit until ten seconds after the Enterprise warped away. At that point, the Enterprise was approximately 1.4 billion miles away, nearly the distance from Earth to planet Uranus. At 3:11, Spock indicated that the Romulan ship had closed to within 150,000 kilometers (93,206 miles). Now how did the Romulan ship do that? @@geoffwilliams4478 Cool. I didn't know that. But it makes sense. I remember in an earlier episode ("Balance of Terror") they actually had one Romulan warship with a bird painted on the underside. The base of the cloaking device in this episode also looks identical to the head from the Nomad probe in "The Changeling" and the bottom of Mr. Flint's M4 sentry robot in "Requiem for Methuselah".
@geoffwilliams44783 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonheathen2092 you're correct on Nomad and so forth. However, the producers wanted to show more than the Bird of Prey, which is why we originally saw the Klingon D-7 battlecruisers

i assume the Romulans and Enterprise have the same technology. If the Enterprise surprised them and gained few seconds headstart and warp factor 9. I don't see how the Romulans could catch up so quickly and have them in weapons range.

Why didn't the bridge lighting go dark when they cloaked?? The power consumption is enormous!

...and how could they maintain warp 9 with that much of a power draw? This was the fastest I ever saw the TOS Enterprise go, and without peep from Scotty. Usually at warp 8, Commander Scott was yelling that his "engines can't take much more of this!"

The Romulans adopted the Klingon warship design. Yes, the Klingon ships were always faster per previous engagements. They also seemed to tolerate the cloaking device better. When Scotty engaged the device, I have no doubt it pulled a lot of juice out of the engines and that's one reason why Kirk ordered hard to port to get out of the way of the Klingon ships.

How friggin fast are Romulan ships??? Enterprise makes a surprise away from them at Warp 9…. And they have little trouble gaining on them…
@BlackPill-pu4vi7 ай бұрын
The Romulans adopted the Klingon warship design. Yes, the Klingon ships were always faster per previous engagements. They probably had no engine governors! Better for a Klingon ship commander to blow up his warship in pursuit than face court martial for letting a Federation Starship get away. Don't forget that the earlier Romulan Bird of Prey ship was hampered by the cloaking device. It was a real energy hog and limited that ship's performance. As I recall, the Klingons and the Romulans formed an alliance and I surmise that both figured out that the Klingon ship was far more capable; especially with the cloaking device operating. When Scotty flipped the switch, it put a real drain on the Enterprise's engines and Kirk ordered a hard to turn to port to let the Klingons go past because it was losing power with that device on.

These distances seem wonky. If they were traveling at warp speed then they would be going much faster than the speed of light. They seem too close.
