While getting the footage on that street, a neighbor came out to ask what I was doing. He knew of the movie, and was living on the street when it was filmed. He said that the houses that were there were bulldozed in the late 80s, when the city bought the property, with the intention to build an on-ramp to a highway there. Those plans were stalled, when too many residents of the area complained about a highway and onramp being so close to their homes (notice just a couple blocks away in the background it's suddenly downtowny area with big office buildings -- an unusual aspect of the neighborhood even mentioned in the movie). The neighbor said as far as he had heard, the empty lot was still owned by the city, with red tape still in the way of using it.
