Sabaton History

Жыл бұрын

By the middle of the Great War, several nations had begun to experiment with shock troops, and Germany was one of them. The Sturmtruppen were a revolution on the battlefield, for sure, but what did they actually do? What equipment did they carry and use? What were the men actually like? Today we'll look at all that.

I ended the history section today with the words, "Get in, wreak havoc, get through, job done." Okay, that was about Stormtrooper missions, but what other things in life would those words be appropriate for? A trip to McDonalds? 3rd Grade? What do you think?

Well Indy, I'm pretty sure that saying goes for my every waking moment. At least that's what my Gruesome Twosome snorted at me when we watched the episode. There may have even been calls for that to become the motto of our home. Kimberly of House Nightkind, the First of Her Name, Queen of Mandrels and the First Rings, Protector of the Seven Momdoms, the Mother of Dragons, Nuthintosee But The Boring Corn Sea, the Unbowed, Maker of Chainmaille.

I don't know if there is anything considered ok wreaking havoc. And yet it happens all the time. Just look at Ukraine right now. I like to think of myself as a peaceful person so I guess havoc is not really for me. On the other hand sometimes you just get anything done if you don't push through sometimes in a aggressive way. But I do believe you should be considered in every aspect of life, at least in peaceful times. Life is such a grey area, that there a probably always situations where you have to be reckless and "wreaking havoc ". I just never want to be in these situations

Doubt a whole lot of that was relevant. Seems more a coincidence than a correlation. Plenty of soldiers were stormtroopers and achieved little of note. Plenty of soldiers weren't stormtroopers and achieved great things.
@Ruhrpottpatriot

Correlation, rather than causation. The Stoßtruppentaktik was the nucleus that even the modern German army draws from. Because it draws on two simple principles: Be faster than the enemy to push your agenda onto him and human psychology. If your HQ gets hit and then the enemy is already somewhere else, everyone except the most battle hardened soldier gets nerves. I'd have to look up the video, but there was a report about a NATO exercise in Denmark (or Norway), where the Brits had get to a bridge and defend it. But when they arrived the Germans had already taken it and the scenario had to be reset. Later that day a Dane (or Norwegian) asked the Germans if they were always this fast. The answer was "No -- usually we're faster".

The central premise of the Stormtroopers' tactics, speed coupled with overwhelming violence and catching the enemy completely off guard, are still central to modern special forces' mentality, with mantras like 'Speed, Aggression, Surprise' favoured by the SAS for obvious acronym-friendly reasons, and 'Speed, surprise and violence of action' by the US Army Rangers (I believe). Great video, and cool getting the live format for a change. See you this Friday (at time of writing) in Leeds, looking forward to it!

During an attack, the infantry could only carry their personal weapons while the defenders had the advantage of their heavy weapons like machine guns. The stormtroopers were sappers who infiltrated The enemy lines and carried heavy weapons into the battle area between the enemy trenches to use during a forthcoming attack. Since naturally it required a great deal of physical strength and endurance to haul such heavy equipment they recruited only their most physically fit and bravest men for the job.

What I find interesting about this is that it forms the basis for modern doctrines. The Auftragstaktik (mission tactics) is still present in the German army today. There is no set of orders that comes from the top that the soldiers just have to carry out, instead there is a goal to be achieved. How this is done depends on the particular circumstances and NCOs.

@@mitchellsmith4690 Funny enough when the German General staff began to review their tactics of WW1 they acknowledged that their Stormtrooper concept was sound and began to implement it on a wider scale. The early Blitzkrieg tactics are in essence the Stormtrooper concept with tanks: locate a weakpoint in the enemy line, break it and then sow chaos among your opponent and don't let them catch their breath. And also worth of note: the Commando tactics used in the Stormtroops was kept: give the officer of a battalion an order but let him deal with it as he sees fit. Which often led to officers like Rommel to lead from the front even after he was promoted to General. There are stories from German tankers that Rommel drove by their tanks in his scout car and bashed on their tank with a wrench to push them onwards.

@ottovonbearsmark8876
@ottovonbearsmark8876 Жыл бұрын
Well machinen pistole(mp) is the German equivalent of the term sub machine gun (smg). Which is slightly confusing because they also call full auto handguns machine pistols too. But the MP18 is an smg, the original smg pretty much.
@Sorain1
@Sorain1 Жыл бұрын
In games, SMG has a specific mechanical meaning that players will assume which has nothing to do with actual weapon classifications. High rate of fire, large magazine, short range, high recoil, poor armor penetration. Machine Pistol, Submachinegun, Shokkblasta. Call it what you will in your game, but people will put the weapon into that category in a game instinctively. It's something of a fascinating contrast between the meaning of SMG in firearms terminology, and that of games. (Table Top/Pen and Paper or Video)

Nope, incorrect.....Grenadiers in Napoleon's army received NO extra special training than regular "line" units....their claim to fame is that they were very "Seasoned-Experienced" grunts. Sappers/Pioneers and true Skirmishers had extra training in those particular skills.

Normal WW1 Soldiers: "OK guys, these eggs have given us a lot of trouble in the past, uh… does anybody need anything off this guy or can we bypass him?" "Uhh, I think another battalion needs something from this guy." "Oh, they need that Manufacturing Plant? Doesn’t - aren't they combat engineers?" "Yeah… but that will help him build better. I have more ammo." "Christ. OK, well what we’ll do, I’ll run in first, uh…flank them. We can kinda just, ya know, blast them all down with artillery. Um, I will use grenades to kinda scatter ’em, so we don’t have to fight a whole bunch of them at once. When my grenades are done, I’ll need the 28th to come in and continue the grenades too, uh… so we can keep them scattered and not to fight too many. When they're done, the 526th of course will need to run in and use flamethrowers. We’re gonna need snipers watching our machine gunners, so they can give cover fire to the infantry, so we can of course get to them fast, ’cause we’re taking all these guys. I mean, we’ll be in trouble if we take them down quick. I think this is a pretty good plan, we should be able to take the town this time. What do you think, Sir? Can you give me a number crunch real quick?" "Yeah, gimme a sec… I’m coming up with four point three three uh, repeating of course, percentage, of survival." "That’s a lot better than we usually do. Alright, you think we’re ready guys?" The Stormtroopers: "Alright chums, I’m back! Let’s do this… LEEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY JEEEEEENKIIIIIIIIIIINS!"

Not even a mention of the Brasilov offensive.. I'm disappointed. So much of that went into the storm trooper doctrine. Most of it came from the offensive.

Hey. I’m actually writing a research paper and the Strumtruppen play a Major part in this paper. My research question is “How did other militaries learn and adopt Strumtruppen tactics as well as how they evolved the tactic to be more successful”. Could I ask for help with finding more sources about the Strumtruppen and other modern shock troop tactics (like the Vietcong for example)? If the question doesn’t make sense, I’ll try wording it a different way
@timawar0058

The logic development of Strumtruppen is Blitzkrieg in WW2. If talking about VietCong, they used similar tactic only in 1974 and 1975 offensives and its was not really the same

@@timawar0058 yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I was also thinking of like how certain tactics were taken from the the Stormtroopers.
