I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed a few minutes of "What Is Wrong With People" Important Goose 😂I was applauding in the background. GET 'EM, QUEEN. 😍🥰😘 I love this theme so much, both for the beautiful listen and also the complexity of the composition. I first heard it over my phone speaker, BLEH, but when I was able to sit down and listen with my good headset at my PC I was increasingly floored by the layers going on. There is this wonderful undercurrent of tension, suspense and, sometimes, almost menace to the piece, accomplished beautifully with strings, synth and piano at various points, while atop it rides this swell of epic brass that fells soaring and majestic. But my ear kept noting the deliberate dissonance of that undercurrent. Dissonance that adds to a piece instead of destroying its harmonics is soooooooo difficult to create, so when it is accomplished at this level, it leaves me breathless. The bridge that starts around, I believe, the 3:20 mark is truly lovely but I was so excited to feel those dissonant strings creep back in, the truly hectic piano segment that slips in. There is a nod to classic horror themes in the undercurrent of this composition that is truly a wonder to experience, because of how it manipulates the mood of the theme, taking it from a solid fantasy melody and into something so much more emotionally (and, again, compositionally) complex and robust. I am left feeling many emotions, not just one sweeping emotion, outside of, perhaps, the overall excitement for the piece, for more to come and just diving into DAV altogether. Thanks so much for another wonderful video!

My favorite part is definitely the part you're talking about, too--like 3:00-4:55 of the theme is just so good. But there's actually another version, I think it's called the "Thedas Calls Main Theme Variant," which I think is more what people were expecting to hear. I'm not a genius at explaining things like Goose, but for some reason it seems more cohesive than the other version, which has some parts I might need in-game context to understand. Some game music, you understand when you see the game. I do think a Trevor Morris collaboration would've been absolutely incredible, but that might've been overwhelmingly expensive; I don't know.

Okay, as a former songwriter/ composer who's made 2 records (They're gonna go aluminum any day now...trust me.) who's been listening to Hans Zimmer since his days with Krakatoa & The Buggles I can tell you that much of his work shows a shift in priorities between Melody & Mood. In Veilguard, the melody is certainly recognizable & easy to follow, but it isn't particularly strong or "catchy" in the way you might expect of a pop or theme song. This is 100% intentional. His mastery shows in how, on the final note of each phrase, he uses the orchestra to add differing levels of dissonance to shift the mood from light to dark & back again. I personally find it very effective, & perfectly suited to the dark, moody nature of the Dragon Age franchise. But some folks are very melody centric. Without a strong hook there's nothing for them to latch on to. Other folks find a strong, catchy melody jarring & intrusive, causing them to spend the day trying to get it out of their head. I truly believe that of all the art forms, music is the most subjective. We like what we like, & some tastes are broader than others. I do disagree on one point tho'. If we were all the same, the world would not be paradise. It would be boring. ; )

I think it's especially tough in this case because this isn't a movie where the subtle shifts in mood are being presented alongside something on screen. The Veilguard's theme actually reminds me very much of Danny Elfman's work that plays in the opening credits of Tim Burton films, which is pretty cool. But this is a game within a beloved series that traditionally has very memorable melodies. It's absolutely nothing against Hans Zimmer - he is a brilliant composer. I love a lot of his work, but am not impressed with this particular piece. This theme just doesn't do it for a lot of people, and those people have valid reasons to feel that way (as long as it's constructive criticism, and they're not hating it for the sake of hating it).

@@LuminEskaGaming I've been listening to Danny since his days with Oingo Boingo & I can tell you without reservation he is definitely melody centric. And brilliantly so. Tbh, I'd be hard pressed to recall any specifially impactful melody from any of the Dragon Age games. If you can, you have a more discerning ear than I do. Still, they all meshed exceedinly well with the game worlds they gave voice to. My experience with the Veilguard soundtrack is a work in progress that has yet to begin. For me, comparing Elfman to Zimmer is akin to comparing Mozart to Mugsorgski. Both of them pushed the envelope. But they did so from opposite corners. Or maybe I'm just too easy to please. I made that comment that you referenced from the reddit thread (about the main theme being mediocre and generic), so I thought I would respond to some things in an effort to turn it into a productive conversation. This got really long so no hard feelings if you don't read it: 1) 100% agree that this game has received a lot of pointless negativity and there's a lot of people searching for a reason not to enjoy it. I never understood the hate for the artstyle, the tone, the combat etc, the game is looking pretty fun to me (and let's not even mention the ridiculous culture war complaints of "wokeness"). I have my gripes with it (3 choices) but the vitriol against the devs and game is completely out of proportion. 2) I don't dislike the track, it is pretty good and if you were blown away by it or something, I respect you. Like I mentioned in the reddit discussion, I think it does get the feeling across that something sinister is happening in Thedas. Still, it didn't speak to me the way Inquisition's or Origins' themes did, and there's reasons for that which are valid in my eyes (it's repetitive, lacks a significant buildup, has a leitmotif that didn't stand out to me and is very similar to a lot of others such as the Rings of Power theme or HDM or Batman etc, therefore I found it generic). Hans Zimmer is undoubtedly a composer that has had massive influence in the way music is made for film, and of course he's written some incredible scores. His legacy CANNOT be questioned. I never said he is a bad composer, nor do I think it would be my place to. I mentioned my favorite scores of his in my comment, and I also mentioned Trevor Morris because to me that comment was more about appreciating Morris and how much I loved his score for DAI than about hating on Zimmer (the article left that out though, as I assume it wouldn't be as clickbaity). However, I do not believe that just cause someone is really influential, that all of their work is automatically excellent, or that I am required to love everything they make. Hans Zimmer specifically has been known to not be above just whipping something out for the paycheck, if he isn't invested in the story he is composing for. Compare his legendary scores for Interstellar or Dune to his score for, say, No time to die, or a lot of his video game projects like Call of Duty or FIFA19. Music is, of course, a matter of preference, but to me the latter are clearly less inspired and pretty mediocre (emphasis on "to me", I don't demand anyone should be underwhelmed just cause I am). Also, keep in mind he has a production company that handles these things, so it's not impossible that he had someone else compose most of it and just plastered his name on top. I find this important because I feel that smaller composers like Morris and Zur poured their hearts into the score they wrote and it showed, and I wonder if Zimmer and his production company cared as much, or if it was worth it to dump the previous composers for him just because of his big name. 3) You might say I shouldn't have talked about it, just accept it's not for me and move on with my day. Well, the comment was left on a thread where someone specifically asked us to share our thoughts. I just wrote a comment and well... moved on with my day. Maybe I should have thought more about it, but I didn't at the time. I also would like to make clear that I didn't say "it's bad and everyone should hate it", nor did most people in that thread. I said "I personally found it generic" which I feel are two very different things, especially since you brought up entitlement. A lot of the comments there have a similarly balanced statement. Since then, I've heard other parts of the soundtrack that I enjoyed a lot more (The stream countdown music that you chose to play in the background of your video, I feel is a much better showcase of the score's leitmotifs than the main theme was). I did not intend to make anyone feel bad about liking it, though perhaps I should have considered that voicing any negativity, no matter how it was intended, would just add to the already overbloated cloud of unreasonable hate and be very draining to read. I still stand by my words, it is my honest opinion and I feel that I voiced it in a way that was not about hating it for hate's sake. I don't feel that I am unreasonable or hateful for not connecting with this theme or talking about it. I also think the idea that just because someone is not enthusiastic about one element of Veilguard, that means they hate everything about it, cannot enjoy anything, and are complaining out of entitlement, could be compared to what you said about haters on your Varric video. It's a conversation you had in your own head that contains a lot of assumptions. All that said, I cannot really blame you or anyone for getting upset, since the climate around this game has been rancid for so long. I also realize I probably shouldn't have rushed to judge when I haven't heard the soundtrack in-game (sound, visuals and gameplay are supposed to be experienced as one). I am more hopeful of Lorne Balfe's contributions, as I am personally more of a fan of his. And of course, I am also looking forward to playing Veilguard in October 31st like everyone else! I fully empathize with your frustration, as someone who really just wants to enjoy the game and is often baffled by how much people hate it without having even played it yet, and want others to hate it too. I hope you can find it in you to consider my POV, and of course respond honestly without reservations, if you still believe I said something I shouldn't have.

It wasn't only yours, right? So, the opinion is not unique. As I said, the article is just a base and an example, there are many more cases online, including KZbin. There are game channels who give the same "mid" rating. They twisted it into another wave of negativity towards the game, composers and their creations. If you like the game and you don't hate it, then the rant didn't address you. However some of your words started a chain reaction of yet another hate trip all over the comments. I remember when Inquisition came out and people were saying the exact same things about Trevor Morris. People were upset that Bioware had abandoned Inon Zur, the music didn't match the feel of the DA World, blah blah blah. But really, it's a fantasy world, of course you're going to have fantasy sounding music. For Inquisition the main theme was catchy, sure.... but I eventually turned music off because lord if I had to hear that song one more time... constantly button mashing to get through the main menu is not a glowing review of a song. Zimmer's music tells a story alongside the narrative, bolstering it, rather than taking it over. For Heaven's sake, the man did Prince of Egypt! Arguably some of the best music in a movie EVER. They are facing off against the Evanuris afterall, and there is an underlying dark tone with Solas' duality and potential for betrayal. The piece could have implemented a point with a dark, cutting bass sound to add the darkness and dread in some more. It was all very light and rushed imo. Those weirdos who hate everything about this game for the sake of hate should take chill pill and reconcider their life choices 🤷 I get being sceptical, but rooting for something to fail is bonkers.

Hans Zimmer is a fantastic composer and I've been to his concerts a few times already. That doesn't change the fact that I find the main theme for The Veilguard mediocre and by the looks of it a lot of ppl do. You don't need to be a composer too to be able to say you don't like a particular piece of music or that you find it bad.

I enjoy the theme, but I do wish it were a bit more epic, like Inquisition, but I'm sure there will be some other epic tracks. It definitely gives me chills and 'sounds like Dragon Age' to me. When it hits its highs, it definitely has a regal, almost foreboding tone to it, that I really like, but it's just not nearly as catching, adventurous, and memorable as Inquisition's title track.

If you like something they don't, they think you're lying, which is a CRAZY level of egocentrism. It's so tiresome. Feral Goose got loose! Phew, that was a lot to let out and I feel you. I keep on considering just logging off the internet until Oct 31st because it's become such a battleground causing unnecessary hate & discontent. Genuine concerns or critiques from people who know the series and/or actually care about it are all fair. The endless stream of videos, articles, and copy-paste comments filled with venom and doom made by people who either don't like DA in the first place or have never even interacted with it are so draining. I just want to appreciate a story I love and the continuation of it that I think will be something special. That's why I haven't checked out yet. If the people who have something positive to say disappear, then all that will be left is the negativity. Can't let the Despair or Spite demons win! ;-) I hope letting some of the frustration out helped and that you can look to your stream and upcoming videos with more joy. I loved the theme that Zimmer shared with us (an Important Goose analysis to come, perhaps?) and it just amped my excitement for the story we're going to be able to dive into in just under a month!

I LOVE this 'rant' -- but let's cut to the chase: people who have decided to hate this game ahead of time are _mostly_ right-wing-oriented gamer boyz who can't stand queer representation and have decided that DA has become "Woke" despite the fact that BioWare has always led the way (relative to when they released) on showing these relationships in their games. As far as the quality of the score--it is awesome. And Zimmer is absolutely a master of the form. I have been writing a book for years and his scores--especially for Inception--has been the background for my writing the entire time. Ramin Djawadi and Phillip Glass are the only other two score composers who suck me in like this. (John Williams scores are easily as great if not better, but they are so inseparable from those films that I can't listen to them without having the films summoned into presence). So YES: I'm so glad you have dismissed these haters. Make no mistake, these are the same people who rallied against Acolyte and any number of other media because they see it threatening their backward hetero-male-dominated world view. There may be the occasional person who is kvetching in 'good faith' but the majority that I've seen use smoke screen objections and fault-finding to try to mask the fact that they are trying to sabotage any and all media that adopts a more inclusive perspective. I'm so thrilled that Zimmer has done the theme, and can't wait to hear more.

Hans Zimmer is iconic. I love the soundtracks he did for both Dune movies way too much. I'm biased towards Morris' work, as he has been my favourite composer for years (Pillars of the Earth, Vikings, the Tudors, to name a few), but my preference for him doesn't make the decision to go with Zimmer a bad one in my eyes. Music is very subjective - some will love it, some will hate it - but all of it has value as art.
@RandomWandrer2 ай бұрын
It's simple. These idiots hating on everything are too young to know who Hans Zimmer is. They just don't know. How do I know they are young? Because real adults are busy with real life and real responsibilities, and don't have time to follow things they hate all-over the Internet. Real adults make time only for stuff that sparks joy, and steer clear of the rest, as much as possible. It's sad that there seems to be a whole generation of people with nothing to do but be miserable online. Touch grass. Make friends. Start a club. Anything but this. You can be happy, just disengage from the screen. Please. I'm rooting for you.

It's funny that this is the negative opinion that set you off :D That said, I don't agree with what you said that criticism is only criticism if you're at the level of Hans Zimmer. Like what girl :D You mean we can't criticize anything unless we know how to make those things ourselves?
@debbierobbins3602 ай бұрын
These whiners are the same exact people who continually play the victim. They choose to believe that they are abused, their sorry, depressing lives are somebody elses fault and the only time they are, I won't say happy because they are never happy, SATISFIED is when they are 100% pandered to. When asked, they can never articulate what they want, just what they don't want. And, of course, each of them want something specific to themselves and cannot accept anything that isn't in lock step with whatever fantasy they have playing on a loop in their minds. People, this game is not YOUR creation. It is the creation of actually talented and creative people. Why not open your minds and appreciate what other people have created for you to enjoy.

I hadn't listened to it until I saw your video. I do not have a huge understanding or knowledge about classical music, but I quite liked it. For whatever it's worth (of my opinion), it has a epic feeling to it. Regarding the hate, well, this is a game that has a lot of hate surrounding it, so whenever something comes out that is related to this game, there will be always be plenty of hate comments following as well. This does not mean that there are not valid genuine criticisms of the game, it's just that a lot of the hate of the game isn't coming from genuine criticism but from people with agendas. And this is everywhere these days (toxic negativity and toxic positivity), both in gaming and outside of gaming. So it's a fine balancing act trying to understand what is "real" conversations and what it's not. Unfortunately, that's the state of our world these days.

I called it.

There are several reasons to have valid concerns about Veilguard, most recently only 3 choices from DA:I carrying over. The soundtrack isn’t one of them. Hans Zimmer is an institution at this point. If anyone hasn’t heard ‘Time’ from the movie Divergent, I strongly recommend it! Not liking the soundtrack for valid points is fine, I don’t think everyone would. That’s like me saying everyone must like Behemoth. Or Eluveitie. Or Draconian. My big question? How much of this is valid criticism, and how much is ‘It’s part of Veilguard, so I gotta destroy it!’? To my untrained ear, the tones and melodies of this single song very much echo the theme from dragon age origins, but with a new composer and more orchestral power in it. For something set in a land never seen any game, ten years after anything that has happened… it’s already an incredible achievement. I only realized the similarities after listening to them both one after the other. There are moments in the theme that climb to a crescendo, and every time-dozens of times now-it chokes me up, brings tears to the eyes of a 45 year old man. Then I remember it has been 10 years since the last time we touched this world with our own hands… I have hope for this game, for the world of Thedas… and it’s in large part because the work that Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe put into this one track (though the full cd is available on iTunes for preorder…)

For people who have an attention span on a toddler, this song might be perceived by them as boring, but its quite the opposite. The entire composition is dynamic and thus it does not feel like a 6 min song at all. There are intensity changes and tone changes throughout. It From 4 min it goes so hard, i head bang my head :D And on top of that the lead melody is quite catchy and memorable. Brilliant theme. The question is, will this epic, dark song reflect the game itself? We shall see. Second I knew I had heard Hans Zimmer's name before and it wasn't until I googled him that I found that he did the music for The Prince of Egypt one of my favourite animated movies of all time with some of my favourite music coming from that film. And if Veilguard got him to do the soundtrack, it's like wow that was an amazing choice. I feel the gaming space is very chaotic as of late and I think the negative response to the main theme was more of an emotional response to their grievances with the game which sure I understand but I feel like main theme isn't always indicative of the whole soundtrack so it's weird they're calling Hans mid so early even if you've never heard his work before. It's cool that your soft spot/line that should not be crossed is music, I personally don't know what my soft spot is and whether I even have one. We are almost at the finish line.

These people are trolls they can’t understand games are supposed to be inclusive for everyone because it lets us do what LIVE OUT OUR FANTASY LIVES IN A FREAKING FANTASY GAME. Games aren’t just for straight people idk why games with women, trans, or lgbtq+ as protagonist is wrong. If a game offers me choices but then takes away my choices especially in romance like horizon kinda does ( im team avad/nil/erend) they pretty much say hey her generic mother was gay so she is too but they forget kids don’t always do what their parent or genetic copy does in this case but I get it it’s for inclusion it may not be my cup of tea but does that make it a bad game HELL NO. Hans Zimmer did He's A Pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean movies. That's an iconic theme, and has actually shaped sound expectations for a lot of pirate things (especially video games). Like, personally, I don't think you have to be an equal in skill to have a critical opinion. You do need to be self-aware to know you are not their creative equal, and somewhat aware of why you don't like a thing. Especially the latter. I'm not a fan of lofi music because it gives me migraines. That's okay, and I don't have to listen (in fact, I shouldn't, because having a migraine sucks). If the VG theme is "boring", it's only one track on the soundtrack. We have not heard the full soundtrack. If you judge The Lion King animated soundtrack by the first track (though it also gets good later), you'll miss the good stuff like I Just Can't Wait To King or Be Prepared. People are too opinionated on things like interactive media before they try them. I understand nostalgia and the urge for security of "like this previous thing". But that's not how things work, expecting rehashes of the same thing isn't how things work. It won't get you the nostalgia hit you crave, because you're not experiencing it for the first time and you've likely grown since the last time they put something out. You're a different person now. But I like the theme. I like how the game is mostly shaping up. Not a big fan of chaotic battle screens with lots of clutter, because I find it distracting. But I have only seen bits. I look forward to figuring it out I am excited for the story. Hans Zimmer is a great composer, and I look forward to playing the game and experiencing it for myself.

I play and cry a lot, but probably not for the reason you meant. At first when I heard Trevor Morris had been replaced, I was worried. Even when He said he was bailed on for Zimmer and Co, I felt a small sense of worry. Mostly because I think Morris work in Inquisition was incredible, so why fix something that is not broken right? But hearing the soundtrack put that to rest instantly. Btw I'm going to see Hans Zimmer live on the 30th, the evening before release of Veilguard, got those tickets long before I heard Zimmer was involved in Dragon Age, now I'm hoping I get a live performance from Veilguard's soundtrack. 😊 It does seem to be a massive range of opinions surrounding this game, from pure vitriol all the way up to blind naïveté, I have gotten some nice discussions in some corners of the internet, but it often gets bulldozed by one of the extremes by the spectrum.

DA series often include famous and proven composer. IIRC DA origins and DA2 prefer inon zur, another very well known video game composer

This is when you can tell the who is in this just to hate the game. Who has actual good reasoning for criticism. There is a outrage bandwagon on KZbin that is surrounding gaming and its not good its absolutely toxic.

Didn't feel anything while listening to the theme, it didn't really feel like a main theme at all tbh. This remind me of "I am the One" from DAO which was dubbed as the main theme even tho it wasn't even in the game as far as I can remember. I think there are many more aspects to making good art other than being good at what you do. Hans Zimmer is for sure one of the most skilled composers out there. But if his heart is not in it, then it doesn't really matter. Also, I doubt he is creating this in a vacuum, most likely he is at least being given some directions by people at BioWare, bad direction can really ruin a score or voice actors performance. And the same way good movie actors don't translate into good voice actors, it might be that great movie composers don't translate that well into video games. I think you're wrong when you're saying things like "You can criticize Hans Zimmer without being on his level" and things along those lines and I am saying this as an artist myself. Art is made to be enjoyed by other people, it is a form of communication. If you experience it and you don't feel anything or you don't understand it, it's completly valid to criticize it for that. Art doesn't have value if it's beyond being understood or cannot evoke an emotion, that basically means that it cannot be experienced and cannot communicate anything which is the main purpose of art and art without purpose. You don't need to be a Hans Zimmer to understand that and be able to experience art or critique art for the lack of said experience. Hans Zimmer is definitly a great composer that is widely recognized by many people. Doesn't make him beyond criticism or somehow immune to making a bad piece of art.

You've explained it beautifully. Sometimes we indeed might misunderstand music. However I can't agree that this theme is bad for the main soundtrack. Also, I've read about how Zimmer works and it is some kind of a vacuum sometimes. People tell him the concept and the emotion, then he starts creating. What emotions did you hear in this music? There were a bunch. Maybe you didn't recognise them or you don't like feeling them, so you became distant almost instantly.

@@ImpGoose I don't think I have said that it's bad. Just that I didn't feel anything in particular. Perhaps, saying "anything" is not accurate, let me rephrase it and say that I didn't feel any particularly strong emotions. It feels more like an opening to a scene, rather than a theme, I unfortunately lack the musical knowledge to explain exactly what I mean. It's certainly suspenseful, foreboding, epic, and has that high, dark fantasy vibe and it's clearly masterfully done. Yet, after hearing it, I cannot remember the melody or anything about it, I had to go back and listen to it when answering you, because I literally forgot what it sounds like. Mayeb that's the thing: It lacks a strong melody. I can remember and kinda sing to you theme from DAO, Hawke's theme from DA2 or main theme of DAI, as well as THAT theme from Tresspasser. This one? I really cannot. Working in a vacuum and having no experience in video games might've contributed to this strange "theme".

I like this theme, but I don't love it. But that's honestly not surprising since I'm not big into music, so it's rare for a game soundtrack to really stick with me unless it's got lyrics I can sing (your videos have had me singing Sera's tavern song pretty frequently these days). That being said, I know that this is an objectively good and beautiful piece of music that I'm sure will hit harder when I hear it in the context of the game, same way that The Dawn Will Come becomes so much more emotional and effecting when it's been connected to the various big moments of Inquisition. I agree that a lot of people are just hating for the sake of hating. I honestly think that at worst, this game's going to fine, not actually bad. It gets exhausting trying to whether all their opinions.

Sorry for making you sing Sera 😅 I like this song myself and it's catchy haha

@@ImpGoose No need to apologize, I like it too! All those tavern songs were really nice, I hope we get some new ones with Veilguard. Sera's honestly my go-to romance and a favorite character of mine.

Starfield had a great album from inon zur the game was still empty trash. Im sorry but yall are focusing on the parts that simply dont make games good origins's sound track didnt make the game great, the characters, world, story, and gameplay did. Your hair physics and soundtrack doesnt overshadow the blatant lack of care shown in every other field. The people making this game didnt even use the prior games to help make this one they ignored everything about dragon age to make this one. An arguemnt can be made that this isnt even a dragon age game since major lore aspects are removed to make it easier for these terrible writers. Im sure none of this means anything to any of you since your minds simply wont be changed even though the fact that there are only 3 choices had to be leaked by an insider who wouldnt let them hide something that killed the game for almost all the fans. You say your staying for the story but what story, it isnt our story its this studios story a studio that didnt like nor play the previous games. This game isnt dragon age, its removed to much of the original construct to be from the same ip. To anyone saying all dragon ages games were drasticlay different is simply wrong.

i really like the main theme, but it's interesting that it sounds more like boss music rather than a usual main theme. i assume that's his goal, given the world ending nature of the plot.

There's so much hopelessness in the first part and then it all starts crumbling down. If this is what Hans thinks I need to feel, then the DAV story will destroy me emotionally and I'll cry like a baby 🥹

Not everyone likes something just because of the name behind it. Some people judge things on their merit and not by the brand slapped on. Some people don't like classical music......and that's intolerable to you? If you can't find even one negative thing I honestly find that disingenuous..... everything isn't perfect and you don't like that people point it out? I'm a DA fan from almost day one and this game doesn't excite me at all. It's a mediocre game at best and some of us are tired of the unending praise just because BioWare? Everyone doesn't get down with classical music and that makes them negative/miserable people??? No, you don't have to be anyone's equal to criticize anything. Have you created a form of everything you've ever criticized? Yeah, didn't think so. You can't complain about judgement while simultaneously judging others. Just wow.😂😂😂😂😂
