This footage is priceless! The Ventures got a LOT of young players pointed in the right direction in terms of musicality and craftsmanship! There were in a league alone! It would have been cool to see this performance, because they were all extra on fire! Mel played his heart out and Nokie was in the stratosphere! Great post!!!!

The classic lineup of the Ventures.......Mel Taylor on drums, Don Wilson on rythym guitar, Nokie Edwards on lead guitar, and Bob Bogle on bass guitar. The Japanese loved The Ventures, and so do I. Fabulous drum solo by Mel.

Bob Spalding has been associated with the Ventures musically for nearly 40 years. He was a member of Mel Taylor and the Dynamics, which although not the V's included Mel, Gerry McGee, and John Durrill (basically anyone who was a Venture EXCEPT Don, Bob, and Nokie). He toured with the Ventures as a fill in player in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and oddly enough, in 1962 as a teenage military brat, saw the Ventures on their first tour of Japan in 1962. He's got very strong Ventures credentials.

Bob’s son, Ian, is now playing with his Dad and The Ventures . They are touring across The US in 2021, as not allowed to go to Japan. I saw them several years ago in Berkeley. Fabuloso!

Awesome! Mel was indeed a great Drummer and unlike some modern day groups, these guys stuck together and remained good mates. The Japanese obviously have good taste and realised the level of talent the Ventures had... A++

On this day in 1965 {February 10th} the Ventures performed "Caravan" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Five years earlier on December 5th, 1960 the Ventures released their debut album, 'Walk, Don't Run', and "Caravan" was track three of side two on the album... The album peaked at #11 on Billboard's Top Albums chart... The song was first recorded in 1936 by Barney Bigard and His Jazzopators... R.I.P. lead guitarist Bob Bogle {1934 - 2009}, drummer Mel Taylor {1933 - 1996} and Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}...

I didnt know much of Bob Splading ,I still had to find how much influence he had to the Ventures itself, one thing for sure Mel's absence was a great lost, Leon to me, he just keep up the beat & loss the power his father had to the Ventures....

I was fortunate enough to see The Ventures perform this live in the late 80's. It wasn't quite this long, but almost. Mel Taylor was amazing to watch.

Mel Taylor one of the best, probably the best of the rock drummers. Even the top jazz drummers would be envious of his ability. Amazing how he got all that fabulous sound out of that tiny drum kit, 4 drums and 1 cymbal. Too bad there was not a video of his playing this song.

I have to agree, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich got all the accalades,, but hiding right there in plain sight until an illness, ultimately taking his life was Mel Taylor. His boy stepped in and has carried the drums for the Ventures since. He's good but his Dad was a tough act to follow.

At 1st there is an A/V sync issue, but just before it cuts to the B-Roll footage, it is in sync... after the Tokyo footage, it looks like the same 1st out of sync footage from the beginning... Japan was their Bread & Butter, i'm surprised they didn't marry and live there... 70 years old and they were still rock gods there, lol... Interesting though to see them young; back in the day...
@109958 жыл бұрын
+scarakus They did, pretty much every anniversary concert was held in Japan. If anyone wants to be successful in the music industry, as far as live concerts are concerned, Instrumental rock and roll is the way to go. No language barrier. That is why they are so loved in Japan. Nokie Edwards joins them once and a while whenever they go to Japan.

@Finobini I'm not sure about the original movie, but almost every upload I've seen of this concert has the video a beat or two out of sync with the audio depending on the song. The only way I caught it was by watching Nokie (the lead guitarist). Mel's sticks are just too damn hypnotizing for me to follow...

@stupullen a bit confused with this video, not sure it was in 1965 or 1966 , may be the Ventures were in Japan in both years. it sound slighty differennt to my japan live 65' CD album, but the way they played this song had a similar pattern, with small gig on different tracks, but it sholdnt be too far off,...they were all awesome tracks...

This is not an alive performance, the video is not synchronized with the sound.
@possumverde14 жыл бұрын
@possumverde This is by far the worst sync of all...some of the parts are dead on but most look like they just stole footage from elsewhere and spliced it in. I guess they got all screwed up when they added the "meet and greet" scenes. I would have loved to have actually seen the part where Mel is playing the bass with his sticks...

It's clearly a fake recording dubbed
@possumverde9 жыл бұрын
+fincaman2 The audio was from the live performance. It was the last song of the special and pretty much the only one where footage of them roaming through Tokyo was spliced in...The editor just took bits and pieces of their performance and somewhat randomly threw them in not really caring if it matched up with what was seen...The editing for the film in general was pretty sloppy...If you watch the rest of the songs from the special, the video is often slightly ahead or behind the audio but you can clearly see that they are indeed playing what is being heard... Why he chose not to show the part of the drum solo where he's drumming on the bass guitar, I'll never know...That was pretty much a staple of their version of that song and deserved to be shown...
