Thanks Thomas for showing us this Spanish classic. In some moments in early 60s, nearly all the cars in Spain were 600. When I was child in the 70s, a lot of 600 remained in the streets. One of the reasons of the success of the 600 was politics. Spain in Franco times was a closed country, quite similar to a communist country in some aspects. All imported products have quotas and big customs fee. SEAT was not in fact a Fiat division, SEAT was a Spanish state-owned company that bought designs from Fiat. Fiat only owned the 7% of the shares. For many years the competence was low, and the production of cars was smaller than the demand. The waiting period for a 600 usually was more than 6 months. But it was the only car that a middle-class Spanish could obtain. The trailer was very rare for sure, in fact, it is the first one I see. Usually people carry the baggage in a roof-rack. In many cases, the car carried 3 or more adults an several children, sometimes 6 or 7 persons crowded inside, plus the baggage on the roof. Fortunately, very few Spanish of that generation were taller than 1,70. The 600 was a good, reliable car. The only weakness was engine cooling. The engine was water-cooled, but as it is in the back, the stream of air through the radiator was anaemic. The car was powerful enough to climb the hill, but if the uphill lasts for more than few minutes, the engine got overheated and stopped. Unfortunately, most part of Spain is mountain and the summer is really hot. Most of the 600 haven't got any seatbelt. Only in 1972, when front seatbelts became mandatory in Spain, SEAT install seatbelts in the last version. But they discovered that the frame of the car was not design for seatbelts, so the B-pillar wasn't strong enough. Therefore, they should re-design the chassis. By that time, all the car was obsolete, so SEAT decided to concentrate in their next big success, the 127, and ditch the 600.

Love this review! Reminds me of my father’s Fiat 850. I used to be his internal windscreen wiper when it rained. The car had its mood swings though, breaking down whenever it felt like it. This made my father named FIAT as “Fiat Is Always Trouble”.

KPTV the Seat Ibiza is probably the best car Spain has ever come up with ; at least a few of us think that way here in Portugal :)
@kptv60097 жыл бұрын
I didn't know the perception that our Portuguese brothers had about Seat. Surely the Seat Ibiza is the best-known and best-selling model, but I think that at the historical level the 600 is unique. For years it was practically the only car that people could buy in Spain. I hope one day Thomas will do a special on the history of Seat Ibiza!

Suicide doors were banned in the 1960s. So they didn't fall out of fashion. Rolls-Royce has special locks fitted. You should do more classic car reviews. You can review the Morris Minor, Citroen 2CV, Renault 4 and 4CV, and Peugeot 205GTI for starters. :-)

Can you please review the FOUR door version of this car (only available in Spain) That one was STRETCHED, so it had more space inside, and had little windows at the back, behind the back doors. Fiat should also have sold, as well as SEAT. That would have been better than the MINI, which had only TWO doors! That car could also have stolen customers from the RENAULT 4CV, which also had 4 doors!

P.D. The importance of the car, beyond the great sales numbers it achieved, lies more in that it became a symbol of the modernization of Spain in the 1960s, after the terrible post civil war years. Isolation from Europe diminished, economy improved -partly due to lots of Germans spending summer holidays in the coast-, allowing middle class afford automobiles, TVs, and experience some improvements... yet under the iron fist of the last fascist regime in Europe

Totally wrong. The trought is that this car was sold as the sucessor of the Fiat Topolino (which was the old "500", build from 1936). Developed by engeneer Dante Giacosa and his group it was sold from 1955 on. It is said that the production was to expensive and so Fiat decided to contract Dante Giacosa to develope a even cheaper car, which lead to the 500, coming out 2 years later, in 1957. This air-cooled 2-cylinder "new 500" (parallel-twin) had really nothing to do with the water-cooled 4-cylinder (4-in-line) "old 500" = Topolino. The 600 was then licensed for production by Seat (and Zastava Yugoslavia) in 1957. By the way, i own one of those Seat's and know what i am talking about.

Spain has serious problems right now. Let's hope Seat won't be touched by the separatist movements desire to leave Spain and therefore the EU. Because Seat produces in Catalonia.
@DILINGER07 жыл бұрын
This is not a real problem, cause most of catalans want to stay in Spain. The separatist can't get the independence, because is illegal. That's the reason because some politics who desobey the laws, are in jail, not to be independentist, not for their ideology or thinking. In Spain many people claim for this ideas every day in the street, media or even the national parlament without problems and a deep respect. But you can declare the independence, you can think what you want, but in Spain (as most of countries) you can to get the independence of a part of the territory with a fake votation. And it's crazy to pretend this with less than 40% of the population support, and against the constitution, the spanish law, and the desire of most of the catalans. Catalonia is Spain, Seat is Spanish, Seat will be Spanish, and I'm proud of Seat history and my country.
@Strongholdex7 жыл бұрын
Volumex Also, ib public elections in 2014 pro independence parties received less than 50%.
@DILINGER07 жыл бұрын
Nacionalism and separatism, are stucked in less than 50% of support, for years and years. Even with a huge manipulation in education and pro-independence press. Independence is a lost cause, not a just cause.
