She was rated the Best Drummer in the country by a national publication. I believe it was Rolling Stone Magazine. We were very lucky to be alive when the Carpenters were opening the world to finer sounds. The first time I heard a vinyl record of 'Close To You' I listened to it at least 8 times straight. I could not help myself. Many teenagers were embarrassed to let their friends know they listened to The Carpenters, but I'll bet their friends listened to then as well. They did not get to the top of the charts so many times without an audience. I want to add that even though I want to watch a 'newcomer' react to the Carpenters, I sometimes just close my eyes and listen to her sing. She was hypnotic, don't you think? Thank you for choosing your own pace beside the millions of others, who could not push her out of their life.

So happy you reacted to Karen's last recording. It makes me cry every time I hear it here's a couple facts for you she did the song in one take. Unbelievable she usually did her own background vocals but could not finish it because she passed away so her brother Richard hired a choral group to come in and do the background vocals. I was a teenager when the Carpenters came on the scene. Back then teenage boys were not into them they liked led Zeppelin deep purple Ozzy Alice Cooper but I loved the Carpenters and bought all their music. I'm just so sad to think what she could have recorded if she had lived but we have to be happy with what she did record and can go back and listen to it anytime and enjoy her immense talents❤😢😊

wow, love your reaction. 75 yr old male here. I got goosebumps listening to Karen from beginning. When I first heard one of her songs while driving, I had to pull off road. She gave me goosebumps. During 6 0's and later, she was not appreciated. I'm so happy to hear this current generation respond like I did. Have to credit her brother also. He wrote and produced her songs. This is for me like Mozart dying too young: unappreciated by his generation. People like you make me believe I was not crazy for my actions responding to Karen.

Yes, it was released after she passed away. It is a sad song, because it did reflect her life. She never found that special man during her life, even though she did get married for a short time, but he was not a good match. This song gives me a feeling when she finally met her MAKER. I hope you will also react to their song "Make Believe It's Your First Time" - which was also released after she passed away. She was only 32 years old: March 02, 1950 - Feb 04, 1983. That was a sad day for me.

Two more suggestions. Karen’s favorite Carpenters’ song was “I Know I Need to Be in Love,” and my personal favorite (which she did not care for) is “Solitaire.” I like it because it totally highlights her perfect pitch, note stretching, enunciation and lower register (she called it her basement). If you want your mind blown, check out British guitarist Fil’s KZbin Channel called Wings of Pegasus. He uses voice analyses tools to compare one of her songs in a live performance versus a studio recording. Some folks accused her of lip synching because every version sounded the same whether live or recorded. What Fil demonstrates is that her live performances were actually more pitch perfect than the studio sessions. She was also referred to as “one take Karen” because she didn’t need multiple attempts to nail the renditions. Richard said one of the reasons she didn’t like Solitaire was because she recorded it in one take and she wanted to try it again, but Richard thought her first take was perfect. I agree with Richard.

This was in fact a one-take, because her vocal was intended to familiarize musicians with the track. It was not performed as the final take, but she was that good. There are a number of songs released after her death that were never completed ("Rainbow Connection" was another one, and their second Christmas album had several songs that were omitted from the first Christmas album, and others that were intended for the album that she died before completing).

I totally get your reactions to them and you are right. Had never been anyone like them and will never be. While her voice is magic, i think some of your great reactions to this song were due to the musical arrangement of Richard who for many years got litle to no recognition to his part. This was because Karen's voice was so magnificent. After listening to then for about 35 years I began to listen more to his contribution and i must say I truly appreciate it almost as much as her voice if not as much because they went hand in hand to make the most beautiful music ever. Thanks young man you have great taste

Also react to the duo's "signature" songs: their breakthrough hit from 1970, "(They Long to Be) Close to You," and their follow-up hit, "We've Only Just Begun." These four are among their career-defining hits. You'll enjoy them.

This might surprise you - and I didn't see anybody else mention it in their comments, but here goes. You are nearly speechless over the sound of her voice on this particular recording, and there is nothing wrong with that. When they recorded a song, Karen would sing the lead vocal, then Richard would arrange around the track, then Karen would come back in and sing the lead track again to more or less match Richard's arrangement. The track you are hearing here is the "lead" track. She didn't get the chance to come back in and redo her vocal. So she would probably be absolutely astonished at your reaction - cause she would think "it's terrible. I had no chance to come back in and do it right." THAT should tell you just how special her singing was. And to give you an idea of the effect her death had on me in particular, when I heard the news she had died, it just simply didn't register. Karen Carpenter? Like, the singer? Dead? No, that can't be right. It took YEARS before I could accept that she left us. And 40 years later, I STILL don't believe it. Am soooo glad the younger generation has discovered Carpenter music and are affected very positively to her voice.

Great to see you that you recognize that Karen is one of the best vocalists of all time. If you want to hear soothing and angelic you need to react to their remake of Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpalh2N7pK99j5o This is their longest track coming in at around 7:14. complete with the comical D.J. entrance to the song. (DJ is actually a musician in their band) It is the official anthem of World Contact Day. It's off their exploratory "Passage" LP from 1977 were they explored various sounds of music including her sublime version of "Evita" which later Madonna recorded and acted in the film of the same name. Ironically, check out the clip of Madonna singing Carpenter songs with the locals in Argentina on the set of filming "Evita". kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIHOh6Wjo7mSbaM . Their "Passage" LP also included their only song to chart on the country charts with Juice Newtons' uptempo "Sweet Sweet Smile" kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGqmp4xvl5ypnZI

Musically it is wonderful and as always her voice is terrific but I have to say it is my least favorite songs. I know it was a great effort but since it was released i have been asking what was Richard thinking of. This is from a 55 year fan of 66 years of age who loves them dearly and can't tell you how many thousands of hours of listening pleasue I have had with them but I never Got this. I never give a negative rection to any of their work and it is still excellent but I never felt a connection with it.
