Hi Judy: Eric had very strong roles in 2 of the shows I directed. You've already written about his making THE PONY CART with Beulah Bondi. I think his stronger role was in the first THE WALTONS I directed, THE CHICKEN THIEF. That was the one where Ben had submitted a poem to Liberty magazine and won first prize. The emotional relationship he had with John Boy, the "writer in the family" and his guilt for outshining his older brother was tender and heartwarming. And Eric was exceptional in his playing.

Yep. The Chicken Thief episode is fantastic. Whenever I watch that scene where Ben finally speaks with John Boy about his winning submission, it still chokes me up. Just thinking about it makes me so proud of both of those characters and the bond they shared. John Boy just turns the whole thing around stating how proud he is of Ben and Ben slowly understands how wrong he had been about the whole affair. It is such a great moment between the two brothers.

Eric's character, Ben, had a short fuse as well as a quick-fire honesty. He stood up for himself, for others and against his own father which was amazing to see in the episode "the Lie", which is one of my favorites (before Cindy). The Waltons came along at just the right time for an 11 year old. Television was filled with police, detective and private eye shows along with various sit-coms. Along come 'The Waltons', complete change of pace. I knew nothing of the great depression, I never worried about where the next houe hold dollar or loaf of bread would come from. I liked the episode where Ben wanted to be the one to bring home the Turkey for Thanksgiving. His acting with grandpa was superb. I also liked his detective work in the episode where John was accused of stealing the rich ladies silver goblets. As to those Baldwin girls, what sheriff would arrest two sweet innocent ladies who didn't even know papa's recipe was illegal? It was all so innocent on their part. All of the characters were superb. I can understand how Cora Beth wanted to be a sophisticated society lady and she improvised by turning a corner of the store into a tea room. She also wanted to add nice merchandise to the store well beyond the reach of most of the residents. And the way she turned to alcohol when her dreams did not come true. I also liked the episode when her sister (or relative) of hers came to visit when she was out of town. Of course it was Ronnie Clair playing the part opposite of Cora Beths character. The acting was fantastic.

Bystanders are sympathetic, until the man admits that he left the keys in the car and did not lock it. The victim moans "Pretty dumb", to which the crowd screams "Pretty dumb is right!! I admit that it was a pleasant surprise to see that Eric Scott also appeared on Bewitched, in 1971, a full year before the premier of The Waltons. I can only wonder how many Waltons fans there are who hadn't seen, or didn't remember, that particular episode, where he played a neighbor of Darrin and Samantha. Later on, Eric joined Ron Masak and Bernie Koppel at a Bewitched Fans gathering; he said that appearing on Bewitched was something that many young actors aspired to do. He admitted that he kept the remnants of the balloon prop that was used to send the message, to Samantha from Endora, "Not until I get an apology from Durwood". Little did Eric know that he would appear, again, with Dick Sargent, when Dick played the Navy Petty Officer in "The Outrage".

John-boy was a writer, like me; Jason was a musician and I loved musicians as I also sing; Jim-Bob was the mechanic and fix-it guy, but also a budding entrepreneur, while Ben was more than just a loving son, husband and father. He had passion and zeal and sponteneity. Just a very special guy you wanted to have for a friend. And handsome and strong! A guy you wanted to have for a boyfriend. But as I was watching the show just now, (and I'm going off topic) I finally figured out who John Walton reminded me of. At first, I thought he reminded me of Robert Mitchum, but the more I thought about how he carried himself and reacted to things, I realized he reminded me more of Russell Crowe.

Great shows develop incredible characters. Storylines provide great material, but every show, movie, book, play, etc, wins me every time with strong character development. That has been so much of the appeal of “The Waltons.” It never grows old. Now thanks to you, Judy we get even more insight. I think that is why your series on KZbin has been so appealing. I have many times over the years wondered about each and every actor/actress that portrays each role. I would go through “favorites” many times-Richard Thomas, David W. Harper, and so on and so on. Now you have shared a “nugget” of Eric Scott. I look forward to more! Thank you! You are so intelligent, interesting, articulate, and pleasing to the ear 👂 Sounds corny, I guess....

My favorite episode with Eric was when he borrowed John Boy's car without permission, and took his girl friend to town one night to visit her mother. Then someone took the car for a joy ride and damaged it. Ben was in real trouble with the family over that , and it took him a while to tell the truth, because he was protecting his girl friend. But that was an episode where he did some great acting. With Thanksgiving coming up, I hope you discuss the 2 part Thanksgiving series, when John Boy gets hurt in the mill, and is unable to finish his college entrance examination. The ending turns out great and he comes home from the hospital for Thanksgiving dinner.

This was a typical situation after the war era, when the vets came home they would redo an existing building into homes. My dad and his brother converted a milking barn into a duplex apartment for the two of them and their wives.

That's really neat. A little apartment or house like that to me would be very cozy. Being small its easier to take care of also.

This was really good. You had a lot of fun things to say. I like the episode where Ben sends away for the...is it elevator shoes?...to make himself taller. He had a lot of "scrapes" with his character too. I am just chomping at the bit to get into our Waltons dvd collection again!

Eric Scott was great as Ben Walton. I liked how when Ben was older he was hot-headed (temper). He just wanted to be his own man and not live in the shadow of his father. You are right about the scenes in the Japanese prison camp, they were some of Eric's best scenes in the show. Thanks for clearing it up about the sawmill and the wood. I was always scared about the wood chips flying into their eyes.

He made the role of BEN and I could never see anyone playing him but HIM! He always seemed lively... I love the moment he stayed with Yancy... I liken this to a Andy Griffith parody on SCTV when Otis watched Opie while they planned a birthday for him...

I think he stayed with Yancy when the house burned down and Yancy and was dismayed that Yancy allowed all his critters to live inside the shack with him.

I was always amazed how that shed kept changing! First a storage shed, then John-Boy asks John to have it for an office.....and then he has a tiff with Mary Ellen after she moves in and, at that point, you can tell it's still not much more than a storage shed. It then becomes John-Boy's press room, then a room for Mike Paxton to stay in when Mary Ellen brings him home and finally a home for Ben and Cindy.

Great job as always. Nice to know how good the directors were. The ones who changed the number so the takes looked less which made the actor look better. I am glad you had a good time filming the Waltons and you all got along so well.

It is interesting to me that in the early Waltons episodes it was obvious Ben was older than Erin (given that Eric is two and a half years older than Mary), but in later episodes Erin was made to be older than Ben (Erin graduated High School before Ben, Mary's name was listed before Eric's in the credits, etc...). Given that I am a person who notices the little things and thinks literally too much of the time, this discrepancy has always been on my mind.
