This book is a masterpiece and is still the best of all tales of alien invasion - the stark descriptions of how ordinary people react to the extraordinary are brilliantly and terrifyingly imagined. I first read it way back in the late 70s (when I was living in the part of Surrey where the first part of the book is set) and I'd forgotten so many of the details until listening to this all in one sitting. Spielberg's ghastly version is a pale and dreadful travesty in comparison to the book, as are all the other attempts to rehash what HG Wells did so superbly. Sadly, we're unlikely to ever see an absolutely faithful-tothe-last-detail cinematic or serialised version that respects the setting and the period 100 percent... but wouldn't that be amazing!! (maybe a project for Peter Jackson?)

The War of the Worlds by HG Wells. Is a classic story. This man was a head of his time. I have seen many movie versions. I have heard the radio show. This is the first time. With a Audiobook. It is a good story. That opened up doors for others.

I remember seeing a green meteorite streak across the sky over Leicestershire, England a few years back, seeing that meteorite that night reminded me of the war of the worlds, I even joked about it to my brother who also saw it, The War of the Worlds has started.

I'd like to hear this read by either Richard Burton, or Oliver Postgate. 😊

Look up Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds. It’s a 1978 rock opera but with narration by Richard Burton interspersed. I actually like the music too, but Burton is top notch of course. You can find it on YT.

Also if only 10 cylinders fell from the sky during the book that's 30 martians, even though people assumed it was an invasion, these martians were like scientist to try and change the Earth suitable enough to sustain them, by changing the Earth's soil composition and atmosphere to suit them but failed, it wasn't an extermination force, they were guinea pigs, and knew that they would be doomed the moment they landed on Earth, for research!

Stephen Spielbergo is working on a sequel also starring Tom Cruise. It's called, "The War of the Squirrels." This time renegade bands of roving pissed off Squirrels, enraged over their brothers and sisters being run over in the streets, roam the cities and the country side. Battling mankind seeking revenge !!! Demanding Squirrel crossings in the streets. Complete with crossing guard Squirrels and Traffic lights synchronized to the comings and goings of Squirrels !!! Tom Cruise is said to be leading an undercover group of spies, dressed like Squirrels. Who seek to infiltrate the Squirrel rebel headquarters !!! I've heard Tom is even stuffing acorns and other nuts in his cheeks in order to create a giant human jowls look. Much like the Squirrels. It should be exciting. Supposedly in order to add more action Spielberg will have a weresquirrel and a count Dracusquirrel !!! It's important to portray the renegade Squirrels as evil and Tom Cruise with stretched jowls full of acorns in a giant Squirrel suit as the good 👦 guys !!

Are you listening to an entirely different version? Evidently you are, sir. I have no idea what you are accustomed to but it is clearly narration of a somewhat lesser calibre. This is beautifully read in a beautiful, clear, English accent which is probably very close to that used at the time and location this novel is set. I imagine that you are used to something along the lines of: "Y'all listen up now cuz I'm gonna tell yer how the Earthlings beat the **** outa the Martians an' it all went down in something called Victorian Times - hey, it was millions o' years ago an' there was DINOSAURS back then an' those suckers didn't even have CELL PHONES!!!" .....
