I like these games, I just wish gamers did, or at least for the reasons I do. Not many genres got so aspirational with their narratives as early as the TRPG. And if you're about to ask about Advance Wars, it's addressed partway through. I know there's about 10000 I missed or didn't discuss, but, and I know this is hard to believe - I haven't played every video game.

i genuinely think youll be pleasantly surprised by FE three houses, it still has some of that gratuitous fanservice, but its a largely ignorable part of the game, and while the characters are similarly gimmicky at first, they have surprisingly more depth. and the story sounds like something you'd definitely be looking for. something else you might wanna pay attention to is Vesteria Saga, a trpg from the original creator of FE thats a lot more akin to FE4 and FE5.

Commenting on this to get it more attention. I totally agree with you, the characters take a big stride towards the mystery of the emblem style depth. They’re still anime as hell, and embody tropes from the medium, but there’s less pandering. Gameplay is tight even if the battalion system breaks it a bit on repeat play throughs. Only real drawback is the story, which excels in its character relationships, but stumbles and skids when it comes to hero/villain motivations. All in all it’s a huge improvement from Fates, and is on par with the originals, but not quite as good as Genealogy’s story or the Fire Emblem GBA’s character depth and gameplay.

As a moldy oldie FE fan, I have no problem throwing stones at Fateswakening for some of the missteps they made. Tonal heelturns, sacrificing story and character for player wish fulfillment, weird lolicon pandering--but Awakening Lunatic+ and CQ Lunatic are considered some of the hardest difficulties in the series, beat out only by things like H5 Shadow Dragon and Lunatic Reverse NM. And while Awakening's Lunatic plus is considered an unfair, unfun slog of soft resetting for bearable enemy skill combos, CQ Lunatic tends to be considered one of the better designed "challenge" modes in the series outside of things like Endgame and The Great Wall. Awakening is strategically void, Fates is a narrative dumpsterfire, and the hard pivot towards Fire Emblem being a self-insert shipping simulator at the expense of character agency is one I will never smile upon, but hey, they *did* have hard upper difficulties. I won't take that from them.

Oddly enough, toward the end of its life cycle, advance wars became increasingly dark. It worked because war is a deadly serious thing to be engaged in, and the downplayed wackiness made the stakes feel higher and the characters interactions more meaningful in advance wars: days of ruin. I see this downplayed wackiness in three houses, and i see fire emblem returning somewhat before awakening came in. I however give my respects to awakening for saving fire emblem from getting tossed in the first place.

Came to comments for this, I got days of ruin after it had been out for a while, and was really impressed with the story. I loved the advanced wars aesthetics so I wasn't keen on buying it for the longest time cuz it looked like it lost its identity, but it ended up being my favorite, at least in terms of story and the gameplay was fun. I think it looks better than dual strike tbh. It's hard for me to top the feel and look of the original 2, but I find it's more memorable than those in terms of story

I highly agree, its brilliant and underrated. Super Robot Wars is one of my favorite and best fondly remembered tactics games for me. I absolutely love tactics games with badass Mechas/Mecha pilots etc. The mechanics are easy to learn but challenging to master. I'd love for Kbash and others to cover it sometime. Really great war stories with great characters/Mechanics in general.

TBH, regarding fire emblem, it's a weird story, and more related to their release consoles and marketing overall. Up until a point, FE was either too niche in the west (lack of a powerful brand) or had problems related to their original consoles (like Path of Radiance on GameCube and Radiant Dawn on the Wii not being a seller because the systems didn't sell much as well to begin with). Since the snes/n64 era, Nintendo wasn't big on consoles, than the ds/3ds came along and exploded everything, be it west or east. Alongside it, Awakening was heavily marketed, with ads on the shop, all over the stores. Sure, the game is fire (hah) on a standalone point, but most of its sucess started with the promos, marketing and success of the handheld. Awakening, on its own, is a good game, and offers something for everyone, be it gameplay or story (a tad weak, but it's still there). Fates is known to be a copy-paste on the success of Awakening, with bad writing, bad mechanics, bad characters, etc. It's almost the black sheep of the whole franchise, to milk on its own fandom. And that is a shame, i agree, i still prefer the old era of characters because they felt way more human and interesting, in a setting way more fleshed out by today's standards. But i have to disagree on something. After Fates, both the Gaiden Remake (Echoes) and Three Houses, despite having their own merits and flaws, returned to the story/character driven themes. 3H has a really slow start, but most of the routes have really good conversations/events that doesn't fell forced, and most of all, the whole "romance" is not jack forced into your throat (3h romance only happens at the end of the game, for example). I don't think it's fair to put them in the same bag as the Fates' fiesta. Funny enough, the most diverse and story/character driven game is FE9/10, whilst being not a sucess hit (but hey, at least Ike is in smash).

While I agree with Fates having a bad story, I heavily disagree with calling Fates a "Copy-Pasteon Awakening's success", or with the idea it has bad mechanics or characters. Or that it tried to milk its own fandom. If anything, Awakening was the one with bad mechanics; there was so little polish to all of them, it was seriously easy to break the game. Granted, behind the scenes, IS was not in a position to curate too much, as it was supposed to be the last of the series, so they went boom or bust on them, but still. Fates refined absolutely every mechanic from Awakening to near perfection; Pair-up, children scaling and calculations, skills, reclassing, etc. It seriously is night and day. All three of the pathways are absolutely amazing sandbox experiences, with replayability on all of them being nearly endless in terms of replayability. Conquest is my all-time favorite game; every time I replay it, every time I get to experiment with builds, every time I overcome the difficult map design (which I have done 5 times, 6 if I count my current lunatic mode), it just gets better, and better. On the characters, while I fully agree with the notion that the support system is flawed, and gives way to a lot of fluff. The problem with Awates supports wasn’t the lack of good nuggets, it was how spread out they were. It is akin to an open-world game; a big open field with undeniably interesting things to look at, but you have to travel a distance to get to them. With some characters like Niles and Laslow and Leo having a lot more nuggets than say Peri who consistently has shit supports (except for that amazing Laslow support). But I found the nuggets more than sufficient for me and painted plenty of the characters in a colorful, but human light. Charlotte is chatty, rude, and tomboy-ish but good at feigning at a damsel->so she can support her parents and pay them back for being so loving despite their economy being in shambles. Kagero is very serious about her job->she was placed on that job at a moment's notice as a replacement for his brother's weak physique. And has doubt issues around her past time, being art. Mozu is very shy, doubting of herself->she became a soldier at a very young age and just lost her parents and straight the fuck up suffers PTSD in her supports with Jakob. And I could go on with other characters like Beruka, Selena, Effie, Arthur, Saizo, Kaze, Oboro, Hana, the Nohr, and Hoshidan royals (minus Ryoma for me), a surprising amount of the children, etc. Not saying Fates is flawless, but I wholeheartedly disagree with saying it is a bad game. But I do agree with Echoes and 3H being a substantial step forwards in terms of stories. Ven though I found them mechanically shallow and boring.

@@gunfighter009 The problem with the wii is it had a low attach rate for core games. The top 4 games were pack in games and in the top 5 to 15 Brawl, Galaxy 1 & 2, and Twilight Princess are the only core games on the list with everything below that getting less that 5 million sales. The wii was dominated by wii ___ titles and party games because many of the sales were to 'blue ocean' customers who had no interest in core titles. Radiant Dawn really didn't stand a chance even without it's obvious flaws and localization issues.

3H in all honesty is a mixed bag is what I can say over a year of constant contemplation over various aspects of the game. If you're as critical and analytical as you are when playing a couple of playthroughs of the 3DS FE games then you'll choke on the problems that 3H has, but I think you will at least appreciate the positives. In case you're interested in playing it tho, don't feel forced in playing all the routes. The game is very repetitive in that regard which might leave negative feelings that might ruin your enjoyment of your first run. Just pick the house you're most interested in. Lot of people sleep on Echoes. It has it's problems, but it's a nice callback to the older titles. Also holds the title for best presentation in the series. Surprisingly enough the world felt rather alive with your visits to different settlements. Kinda wished 3H did something similar.

I feel like Three Houses is a step in the right direction (i.e. a step away from Fateswakening) in terms of characters. Yeah you’ve got some one-notes, but they at least made sure to put a lot into the main characters. I find Edelgard, Dimitri, Claude, and Rhea all compelling in their own way.

Problems is a lot of characters use one dimensional shit in their support convos, I don't remember a single C level conversation that was remotely interesting. Atleast by the end of some you get some more depth to most characters but there is still too much chaff. Plus the story of the is wildy inconsistent, the first part is slow placed garbage. The dimitri and claude second halves are definitely better but also suffer from inconsistent writing from time to time, and Edelgard route is just shit.

I agree. Although the weeb pandering is still there with the tea parties. But the writers clearly put more time and effort with the story and the characters than they did with Fates. When I encountered world building in the support conversations, I knew the writers actually cared. It certainly has it's flaws, but I feel it is a step in the right direction, a mix of the old and new. Also Echos has zero waifu pandering considering it is a remake. One of the best FE in presentation and one of the worst in map design.

You skipped the 2 FE games I liked out of the three I've played so far: Echoes and 3H. There is marriage in 3H, but it’s like an additional element to the end credits, not a full blown mechanic like in Awakening. Also, the tea time thing you showed can be had with characters of the same sex too, so I wouldn’t call it waifu baiting. Supports still give you some stat boosts, but that’s been the case for a long time, if I’m not mistaken. Echoes has a bang of a presentation, but some maps outright suck/require you to cheese your way through, but the gameplay is solid

I like old and new Fire Emblem. I think they both offer solid stories and characters. I think people often see what they want to see in something. If you go into something expecting to find poor quality, you're going to find it there. I don't think the writing or characters in newer FE games are bad. Sure, they jump the shark a bit, but I still genuinely cared for and was shocked by twists in each of the newer games.

Did you play Three Houses? It definitely fixes a lot of the issues you bring up with with Awakening and Fates. A lot of the support conversations are really funny or emotional. Not all the paths are created equal and I feel bad for people who chose Edelgard's path first time but the other two are seriously great stories. As someone who has played all NA titles I can say with confidence it's the best one of them all. EDIT: I wrote quite literally one second before you said you didn't play Three Houses

It's amazing what a little re-framing will do for my opinion on a game. I admit it, I used to think Awakenings characters were more interesting than the old games. Then I replayed it recently and noticed how much they shove Kellam's gimmick down your throat, or how Gaius just F***ING, LOVE, CANDY. I didn't really put it all into perspective until this video though. Awakening is still my favorite in the franchise for its accessibility and volume of content, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Tellius games and maybe I'll even finally go finish the GBA games now. Thanks for helping me sort out my thoughts man, and I hope you get to see more of these war stories some day.

Really gotta give you props for putting in some Battalion Wars music in the middle of the video - such an underrated real time strategy game (we were lucky enough to get two titles). It arguably couldn't be it's own thing without getting compared to Advance Wars which was already a niche franchise, so I don't think it got a fare shake or an opportunity to improve it's mechanics.

Yeah I've watched this video a couple times now, and I just wanted to comment on some things. First of all this is just a great video dude. I think you covered the topic fairly well and you had some really nice editing. I also appreciated for the little tidbits on the beginning of the TRPG/SRPG/TPT/"whatever the heck you want to call it" genre. Honestly, I've been interested in getting into this genre and I think this video gives a good overview on some of the great games it has to offer. (I've heard good things about Final Fantasy Tactics and Advance Wars so I'm hoping to play those games) By the way that conclusion was solid it you just ended the video marvelously and all I could think was "Damn, now that was a good video." As you probably have already guessed I am a bit of a fire emblem, and all I am saying is (13:10) yes people do care. As you can probably see from the comments you are not alone in this issue and I resonate with your feelings here. Speaking of the comments yes If you haven't heard Three Houses does fix a lot of the pandering problems the previous games had, and if you are interested in the game I suggest going Blue Lions because it has the best story and main cast of the routes.

I thought Valkyria Chronicles looked *amazing* as a concept and jumped all over it when I could. Imagine my disappointment after playing the very first mission and discovering the *only* factor that determines your grade for a battle - and therefore how much xp you earn from it - is how many turns you take to finish the battle, meaning if you want to earn high scores you essentially have no option but to play the game at suicide-rush pace, more like an action game broken up by segmenting your actions into turns than a tactical or strategic experience. I haven't had the heart to play further. One of the big appeals of this kind of game, for me, is *not* needing to rush things most of the time.

VC4 has looser turn restrictions on its max ranking but it's still essentially Scout Rush: The Game. Valkyria Chronicles is super frustrating for me because the game's mechanics are so goddamn good but it's held back hard by ATROCIOUS map design. Every map is designed to be gimmicked, and you'll be actively punished for playing any other way.

I knew exactly how you feel about fire emblem awakening and fates. saying that, I can say that 3 houses is a big step away from the things you mentioned. it isnt entirely gone but it definitely takes a back seat.

Awesome video!! Also we are the same, I grew up with Fire Emblem, starting with the GBA games, and almost gave up on the series entirely after playing Fates. And I say: play 3 Houses, I think has a good balance of what you're looking for in terms of story and gameplay, and also what the recent newcomer fans are looking for. (Also Echoes: Shadows of Valentia on the 3DS is also really really good too, since it's a remake of FE2)

I think you would also probably like Wild Arms XF. It's a tactics an a hex board that I remember being pretty fun to play. On the other hand, I do remember a lot of the characters being kind of static and flat.

I think one of my favorite things in games in general is when there's a decent amount of characters and you can point at one and say "that's mine and no one else can have them." This genre as a whole is really good at exemplifying that (along with other jrpgs and pokemon and almost every fighting game)

This is a very great video, the one that i was waiting all along for someone to make, it covers a lot of things i love about the TBT genre. it has a lot of variety, but only in one big spectrum that leans one way, and that's a shame. I was hoping for some more universality not just anime TBT games, not just playing the all time familiar games but to go beyond the comfort zone and explore uncharted territory, unfortunately that never happened. Years ago i did that, after i kept replaying that one game for a decade, i was intrigued to find other games to expand my understanding of this great genre, so in 2011 i wanted to try those anime TBT games to see if they can surpass That one game. this is how i got into Disgaea Valkyria FFT Tactics Ogre Fire Emblem XCOM 1& 2 Advanced Wars Phoenix Point even a little of Silent Storm. before all of it my knowledge of the genre was Military Madness Nectaris (PS1). There was a sense that Sir Tech was charting unexplored territory, inventing the rules as they went along, there was and are right now, many TBT games but they only play in the safety of its vehicle like all XCOM did before and does now. Jagged Alliance 2 (1999) was released and the genre wasn't the same for me and who ever played it couldn't go back. To this day there is nothing that can beat Jagged Alliance 2, there is nothing that comes close to it in the market nothing can match up to it's potential, nothing that can be remotely catch its dept of versatility while being so grounded in its rules, without any cheap shots or gimmicks, nothing can give the same feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction when your way of playing works, even when you're not a hardcore gamer and only play it on easy and casually, nothing can even be presented by corporate giants to touch it nor defeating it. and that's without the 2014 mod "1.13" that makes the mechanics even more deeper and overwhelming, and without any other mode that is compatible with 1.13, that changes the scenery into another or bigger game, JA2 is the perfect storm and an anomaly of game industry.

I wholeheartedly recommend you try out Fell Seal: Arbitrer´s Mark and Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs, the indie scene has created some awesome TBT games to fill the gap (but obviously you know that since Wargroove, for example, exists)

I recommend dipping into the Utwarerumono series if you care to try something that focuses on the story. It's more heavily VN compared to SRPG but there's a very fast paced set of mechanics and element system mixed in. As someone who really likes Tactics Ogre I got pretty swept up in them.

With Awakening's character writing, I really think letting everyone have 8+ other supports with no limits meant they had to distill everyone into tropes in order to not end up writing the next Homeric Epic. Don't get me started on how actually bad Fates is that it makes even Awakening look decent. The support dialogue stopped feeling like a reward because unlike past games you don't *really* learn anything new about each character, army, or the world itself, it's just rote and boring slice of life skits.

I always called this genre, "Tactics grid games," and I still do most of the time lol While Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game of this style (and of the final fantasy games to be honest) but another one I really love that I'm sure few people really remember or even cared about when it came out was a Game Boy Advance title called, "Onimusha: Tactics." If you love the Onimusha games or even if you just want a really interesting tactics game or even if you just like the whole Samurai-esque themes as a whole then this game would've been your think more likely than not. As you can probably tell, I love all of those things XD
