The War the World Blinked at: How the Middle East was Forever Changed by North Yemen's Civil War

Many of Yemen’s conflicts have been forgotten, both past and ongoing. One of the former was the North Yemen Civil War, which rocked the country for much of the 1960s. A proxy war where the real players were Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the North Yemen Civil War became far more influential than anyone expected.

If Egypt is blocking refugees from the other Arab countries, says a lot about their own protectionism of their population and the need to prevent civil unrest within the country.

@mmmhmmm8236 He helped remove British influence from the country, enacted land & social reforms, great access to jobs, health institutions, housing, education, helped end the last remnants of feudalism in the country, began industrializing the country and put Egypt on the map as one of the major developing nations. In addition this time led to a revival of Egyptian culture, it is still regarded as a great time period in Egyptian history for their culture. Most people know about things like the pyramids, Egyptian gods, and the sphinx because of the cultural revival of his time. In addition in the Arab world he is seen as a figure of unity and brotherhood among the Arab nations, making him revered not just in Egypt but the Arab world too. This is why he is regarded as a hero

Underneath all of Yemen's other internal tensions is a water crisis. Water has always been a scarce resource, with tribes fighting over wells, but the last few decades has seen a terrifying decline in availability. In the 1970s the water table below Sana'a was about 30 metres down. By 2012 it was 1.2 kilometres. The UN defines the threshold for "water stress" as 1.7 million litres of water per individual per year (that sounds really high but it includes all the water one indirectly uses - eg. the water used to grow food). In Yemen the average is 140 thousand litres. Nearly half of that is used to grow the narcotic khat, ie. wasted.

Then from 2012 onwards, suddenly the MSM with writers with Vietnamese sounding names writing in grammatically correct English, started to claim China must have suffered a huge defeat with massive casualties. These writers then wrote excitedly about a future US-Vietnam alliance against China. Really? Egypt came out partly victorious because half of Yemen was declared as a socialist pan Arabist nation. I wouldn’t called Egypt’s Vietnam since Vietnam was never segregated or annexed by the U.S Plus Vietnam had only the USSR on its side and was fighting the nato and America, while Yemen had on its side UK, US, Turkey, Iran, Israel, Belgium, France, and Saudi Arabia. All against Egypt. Completely opposite scenario
@habsburgron6537

False. The Egyptian military weren't able to defeat the royalists and the royalists were only defeated when the Egyptians left and they had lost support from Saudi Arabia. Egypt didn't annex Yemen or segregated. Besides that, Vietnam was supported by China, USSR, North Korea and several other communist allies. Saudi Arabia, Iran Jordan, Israel, Pakistan and the UK supported the royalists. Also, many historians and scholars even call the North Yemen Civil War "Egypt's Vietnam".

Thanks for this excellent and well documented video. I salute you your efforts to dig in the archives, the photos are extremely rare. My opinion is that Yemen started its collapse and heading towards a dismantled state since the revolution in 1962. The simple reason is the destruction of the social cohesion in the country as the revolution was not born in Yemen, it was fuelled by foreign interests. Since the 1962 revolution, while it may seem that equality was established, however, in reality, there was no respect for any state or ruling party ever since. Yemen is composed of tribes who are all heavily armed, stronger than any army. At the time of the Imam « Royalists » at least there was a respect to the ruling Imam from a religious perspective that successfully maintained peace and order for 100 years. Examine the evolution of North Yemen, and you’ll see how doomed its evolution was and still is. Unfortunately!

Nasser was welcomed with open arms to Jerusalem, but Yasser Arafat was never allowed once into Jerusalem. just goes to show that there are different tribes, and that the english basically ascribed the word "arab" to the entire people of the middle east incorrectly (the ancient translation of the word 'gharab' meant "person of the west"). sort of like how the "chinese" people are more than one ethnic or racial group and their identity of being "chinese" morphed into being more of a political and cultural identity. the land of India and all the Indians are also many different groups of people...

It all started when the last Himyarite king cursed the peninsula to be as chaotic as it will ever be before riding to the Red Sea to his death.

Nasser was never considered hero in Egypt his regime faced was a lot of resistance from intellectuals in Egypt. The first thing Nasser read in the morning was the jokes that Egyptians made about him. He was a dictator that surrounded himself with loyalists who don’t have any skills.

Didn't the Arabs joined with the British to overthrow them. I don't think the Turks will ever forget or forgive the Arabs for that. The Arabs are the reason why the Ottomans lost WWI.

Not a single attractive person in this whole video, except for JFK and a few British foot soldiers. No wonder everyone is pissed the entire time 🤷‍♂️ 😆 Btw, if you guys look at the map of the Middle East today, you’ll notice it’s similar to its map in the years 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 etc. Same characters too, just different actors.

The “Yemeni royal family” wasn’t even Yemeni they were Turkish. South Yemen was very close to bringing Yemen back. The North Yemen was always the bad guys because of their Turkish ideology
