I am a Blood Angles player and you can tell things are bad when you buy a unit of sanguinary guard and have to go 3d print shoulder pads, heads and jump packs with wings to make them look good and stop them looking like Stormcast Eternals. They made everything so generic.

I'm an Iron Hands player using Blood Angels rules because GW squatted my army's rules, and I think the new models are fantastic. A few quick swaps of the head and shoulder pads, remove a few blood icons with a knife, and boom you'd never know they were blood angels models. It's great!

It's not warhammer 40k being boring, it's the fanbase being boring. I started collecting Tyranids now when coming back to the hobby, and i've constantly been impressed with the quality of their newer models. Space marines, with how many GW are making, are just bound to be bland

2 things, 1.most of the range refresh for nids has been a step up from what they were but they still are boring for models. I want to say around 1/3 of the refresh and new models were really good but comparing to AOS they are meh at most which makes me sad. 2. Space Marines dont need to be bland, case and point old Inquisitor Cotez was such a good model then the new one butchered my man so badly when they could have just kept the old pose and such and just updated the model but no. Seems like the designers are bored

I think overall the problem is that they don't allow the sculptors to "have fun" with 40k and it seems like Necromunda is where all the fun ideas go. I didn't play old 40k but I was still wanting Squats to come back. Then in 40k we got Leagues of Votann who are... shorter Space Marines essentially with some kind've cool vehicles. Necromunda Squats are what I actually wanted in 40k

They keep removing unit specific minis of specific armies, and then create an "upgrade" kit for those units from the different armies. Go ahead try and find a Dark Angels specific Terminator. Not a Knight, a Terminator. It used to be this way. They also don't post any paint recipes like they used to do either. The DA's have a specific Aquilla to them and only them. So, making a DA army out of Ultra Marine kits is not going to work.

I just got back into the game and dark angels this year and dude they don’t even give you all the right transfers in the new combat patrol, also they give you the old upgrade sprue. But yeah good luck if you want to do Ravenwing or deathwing. You get like 2 vehicle transfers for ravenwing, and like you said the Aquila for deathwing is kinda deathwing specific

So, I'm going to say this..... with 40k's #1 model being upgrade sprews, they could have had the Night Lords kill team kit instead, a LOT of us who really like Night Lords have been waiting for years for an upgrade kit of them again since GW took them out of stock many years ago. Can't make Night Lords without the look to them, after all, the sprews are plastic and not resin like they were before. You can make most space marine factions without specific parts, but its like trying to make Krieg models without anything aside from cadian stuff. That I think is the main reason it won, and it makes sense that so many people love the idea of being able to make their army when you can make the army (especially when the only other way to get night lords was to go to find some 30k models if you could find them).

As I've been saying to customers for the last year, GW considers 40K to be "Too big to fail" so they put the actually skilled artists to work on the other systems because even when people complain about the wonky looking 40K models, they still sell like hot cakes.

I actually love that a damn uograde sprew won for 40k this year Seeing as some of the other options were "that newly ruined inquisitor" (coteaz), "the newly ruined blood angels", or "Some scatter terrain" I was hoping one of these obvious meme choices won (these all being the top 5 would have been ideal, but way too hard to orchestrate) You're right that 40k has been underwhelming these last few years (especcially imperial stuff) but I do think the upgrade sprew only won as a joke, not as anything actually serious

The thing I have noticed with Warhammer and particularly with 40K since my son and granddaughter want me to get back into it, is that Workshop treats Warhammer like "This is Space Marines 40k, get 999 different flavors of ..... Space Marines, oh and the odd (Nerfed) alien race because we need ... um .... someone to fight. Oh and we do have that other fantasy thingy that we tend to forget that we even have".

It should tell you how bad at design modern GW is when one of the artist that made art for old 40k doesn't release a paint scheme for his classic art using Citidal paints and instead for army painter.

GW also has a lot of models that are almost 2 decades old which they could do some amazing updates with. Necrons had a weird roller coster ride and despite their win rates, as a Necron fanI really don't like their 10th edition Codex. I still can't believe they didn't restrict the number of C'tan that could be brought into a list. Speaking of the Night Bringer, the Deceiver and the Transcendent C'Tan are way over do its practically criminal. They also didn't score any points when they removed Anrakyr the Traveller, Nemessor Zandrek and Vargard Obyron from the Codex without telling us until the Codex dropped. The detachments overall feel uneven when it comes to balancing which can be partly blamed on nerfing unnecessary units/models, when all they had to do was restrict the number of C'Tan like they did in 9th edition which has me wushing they brought back some kind of Force Organization. I've lost all interest in the faction, especially with Hyperphase legion dominating the only way to play when they should have toned its rules back so that only Infantry could be removed from the board and brought back on your turn which is actually what happens in the lore. Not huge Doomsday Arks, C'Tan and vehicles in general. Annihilation Legion still sucks considering the only thing they changed was adding a 2nd detachment rule that allows Lokuhst Destroyers to gain an additional -1 AP on their shooting which doesn't address the poorly designed Stratagems that prevent melee units from entering enemy engagement zones unlike World Eaters using their blood surge ability, or the Blood Angels Death Company Brutalis Dreadnought which also can move whenever he attacked and is allowed to end in an enemy engagement zone. For some reason Dark Angels didn't receive a Primaris plastic update for their Chief Librarian, Ezekial, who is probably the smallest first born Space Marine still being cast in metal. I was 100% certain he would get an update after Azrael whose prior model was also small and made of metal. And all they did was copy his old pose with an alternate helmet option which looks very outdated. Maybe its the paint scheme they chose on the helmet with the red feathered wings? Also, Sammuel Grandmaster of the Ravenwing also did not receive an update nor did the Black Knights and oddly they gor to keep thier Command Squad while Deathwing Terminators completely lost thier's in addition to losing their Deathwing Terminators ability to swap out their powerfists for Thunder Hammers and Lightning Claws. If GW thinks people are going to purchase Ravenwing Black Knights and their Command Squad which are first born, they are fools since we know it's just a matter of time before they dumpster them to legends. They overhyped the whole Dark Angels refresh while secretly deleting a significant amount of data sheets which made the Chapter live up to its lore. Instead we got a handful of updated characters, many with very underwhelming rule such as Belial, Lazarus and some debate the Lion's rules are somewhat underwhelming coming in at 330 pointswhich is more points than the Night Bringer. Andsince when did Apothecaries lose their ability to heal D3 wounds, while Deathguard have a plague surgeon that heals Deathguard models and also returns 1 slain model to the unit. Blood Angels recieved a much better supplement despite the debate on the updated Sanguinary Guard. At least all of thier Epic Heroesare no longer firstborn and Mephiston remains one of their coolest characters. I would love to try AoS with thier stunning mode; range, but its just not as popular around me so I've decided to skip 10th and play Skirmish games like Kill Team or other games such as Underworlds.

My vote for best 40K miniature of the year was for the Vespids. I think the reason they were the best was because the previous Vespids were poor, and so they had some freedom to create a newish identity for them and be creative. For a lot of new 40K models the armies and units all have a strong, established, visual style and there's a conservatism that doesn't want to change too much because a lot of the existing models are already pretty good. Unless they invent a completely new army there's really not much else to do in 40K. Anyhow. I finally put together the Warhammer Giant I bought around twenty years ago...

That said, it's noticeable that the Vespids didn't even place in the top five. The uncomfortable truth is that GW have found a large market with their current direction, and I'm in a minority. Most of their customers are happy with what GW are providing.

im a fan of chaos in general but my tainted heart belongs to slaanesh and the EC second is either the nightlords or the black legion (simple color sceme but so heavy metal) and im all ready seeing it looking like generic SM but with the difference on the weapons and helms and thats it. what we have seen so far for EC looks like they are made very plain so you can kitbash/slapchop (what every the *squeek noise* they call that crap now.....) able. just look at the shoulder pads and arms.

40k fans don't care so much about quality of models, so GW has made the right choice to put their good sculptors where they want to work; not working on 40k
