When I worked in construction over the 5 years I did it. I honestly just wore a carhartt hoodie and a a few long sleeve shirts. With how much I was moving I kept warm even on the coldest of Detroit days. And it allowed me to remove layers through the day. Also gave me the flexibility I needed in my arms.

Hey Carl, First off, thank you for all of your in-depth videos on work wear. Your focus on form, function and style means I get to look great getting the job done. I discovered your channel several years ago because I was on a job in upstate NY and shredded all the tacticool pants I brought for the job. I was complaining to anyone else on the crew that would listen about how my overpriced pants were not cutting it until one of them said to go get some carhartts and shut the hell up already. Growing up in Miami Carhartt wasn’t really a thing so I started doing some online research and your channel caught my eye. Since then (partly due to your videos) I have spent a small fortune on Carhartt jackets and pants as well as two or three Filson items and my favorite of them all, my Flint & Tinder wool lined waxed canvas trucker jacket! I work in the film industry so I’m outdoors 16 hours a day when on set so your guidance has come in handy. I just watched your Best Carhartt jackets of 2023 video to see if there is yet another jacket that I just can’t live with out and it left me with a feeling that Carhartt is heading in a direction that I’m not sure is good. By that I mean all of the new materials and getting away from the classics. It seems that they are trying to capture the the more sport / camping / Starbucks crowd. If so, I’m sure it’s great for their bottom line but I’m concerned that I just found a great thing and now it’s all going to change. Since you have your finger on their pulse, what do you think? Thanks again for all your work. Rick

I own a #6, and it is so warm that it will damn near burn you out of it. Definitely warmer than it ever needed to be here in Southern Illinois. Our winters rarely get very cold anymore and it hardly ever snows. The best reason to purchase one though, is that unlike the popular hiking brands like North face and Patagonia, it's as warm as they are and it doesn't rip like their jackets. Always seem to. You. Snag them once, and you can kiss them goodbye! The same cannot be said about my Carhartt jacket. It is made with cordura and is extremely hard to snag or rip.

While maybe not the warmest, my personal favorite is the Bartlett jacket. It’s distinct from Active jackets with its signature chest pockets, but similar enough that you know it’s genuinely made for work and not a fashion piece like some newer Carhartt jackets. However… my favorite RARE Carhartt jacket is the Aztec Active jacket, with a southwestern style band across the chest and shoulders. Even better if you can find it in red. Red is a RARE Carhartt color, but they never disappoint.

I have to say, I got the Montana jacket last year to wear while I plow snow with my tractor (which doesn’t have a cab) and I have to say it’s the second warmest jacket I own not by much. Easily could wear with just a base layer down to 10F. Perfect for sitting on a tractor for an hour or two. I just wish it was a little longer in the back.

@@BringerOfZZa My warmest jacket is a Patagonia Hyper Puff Belay jacket I got at an outlet for roughly the same price as the Montana. That coat with just a shirt on underneath I can wear before 20F still be very comfortable. I have worn it in -15 F with a 15 degree windchill just needing an R1 and a base layer underneath. The Montana is pretty close to that warm but honestly I bet it would feel warmer if it went lower in the back.

Always enjoy watching these Carhartt warmth rankings. One thing I will note though, I really dislike how Carhartt stripped the names of all of these tried and true jackets & coats. When they made the change a few years ago and as they said “We made it easier to find the info you need by simplifying our tags” in reality they gave all these coats & jackets long & confusing names. For instance one of their most popular jackets- The Bartlett jacket is now called the -RELAXED FIT WASHED DUCK SHERPA-LINED UTILITY JACKET Or the Steel Jacket is now called the - FULL SWING® RELAXED FIT RIPSTOP INSULATED JACKET I think for the average customer (at least to me) all the names sound the same now, not sure it helps out anyone trying to identify one of their favorite jackets now.

I've worked for Carhartt for over 10 years and my favorite for cold weather is the Yukon Extremes Active Jac. But for fall temps my favorite is the original Sandstone Detroit Jacket, J97. Not the new Detroit Jacket, which I don't care for. It's still a nice jacket but I prefer the older ones that I have, and I have 3 of them in 3 different colors. I laughed when you mentioned the Detroit Jacket and how Matthew McConaughey wore one in the movie Interstellar. When that movie came out we could not keep those things on the shelf and they were flying out the door. My Detroit jackets are all what they called sandstone and not the more rigid duck material, and the new one is only available in black and Carharttt brown which is all they have now for the Detroit Jacket. And I don't care for the drop tail on the new Detroit jacket and you don't get the snaps on either side at the back to cinch it up around the waist a little. I have one in Carhartt brown, one in gray, or what I think they called gravel and one in a color they called camel. Altogether I probably got about fifteen or sixteen different Carhartt coats and jackets. And I wish they would bring back one they called the Santa Fe which I have in a two tone black and gray and has a western yoke styling. But I think the most valuable one I have is the 100th anniversary Chore Coat which came in denim with a lining of 100% wool from Faribault mills. And has a label on the inside signed by the person who sewed it.

Any ideas on why they stopped with the yukon extreme parka? I have that one as well as the yukon extreme active jacket. Love both, break out the parka for harsh winter days, crank out the active most winter days, and the heavyweight sweatshirt w/liner for moderate winter days. The parky is a bit big/bulky and quite expensive, but boy is it warm. Industrial/commercial HVAC/R tech, so plenty of rooftop winter days/nights.

I live in NW Montana and I want to buy the Montana jacket. WTF is level 4? Is it good to minus 20, minus 40, or what? What is a clo of 1.9? And if we are ever told what the temperature parameters are, does the rating apply at rest, light activity, extreme activity, or what? if someone is trying to sell a jacket that could handle the coldest conditions on earth, shouldn't they give us at least a vague definition of whatever the F$%k "coldest conditions" means? I work outside and it can get down to minus thirty on some occasions and below zero quite often if it is a bad winter. How about the wind chill factor? I'd rather see minus twenty than a wind chill factor of minus ten! I love Carhartt but I am surprised they can't be more specific. BTW, the "off the rack" jackets by Northface, Columbia, Eddy Bauer, etc. don't cut the mustard in Big Sky Country. I'll still buy the Montana jacket on faith but Carhartt is leaving money on the table by not being specific!

Im not sure if this has been asked already or not. Would you happen to know how truewerks high vis jackets would compare to the carhartt sherwood jacket? I got the yukon extreme active jacket a year or two ago. Its very nice for working in cold weather, but im looking into getting a high vis coat for winter. I got some truewerk shirts and pants this year and have been very pleased with them. Sorry for how long this is getting. Is there any place to get the info relating to the actual warmth rating? It’s okay to say this is Carhartt’s warmest coat, but what does that actually mean? Is it rated to wear at the Antarctic, a Montana winter, or a cold day in North Carolina? There should be a chart that lists the actual comfort rating in degree Fahrenheit.

Hey Carl, any chance you will do some reviews for the refrigiwear coveralls or bibs? Quite a few guys in my trade recently gave up on Carharrt due to their outsourcing and mostly to them firing employees who wouldn’t get the shot. So far I’ve had the iron tough coveralls and the 54 gold coveralls. Both were great. Warmer than my Yukon extreme bibs and parka. The iron tough are made in USA and that is a huge plus the 54 gold are not which sucks but the gold ones are about 1/4 the bulk of the iron tough and rated 4* warmer. Now I can’t speak to how long they will last and I’m not laboring in them as I’m a Iuoe operator and they keep me warm on open cab machines .

Carhartt Montana is so good. Almost too warm even in the snow.

I’m a fan of Carhartt, not a fan of seemingly outsourcing everything. I will say for mostly foreign made, it’s still durable stuff. Also their FR line is typically way oversized, I almost exclusively wear non FR carhartt jeans and pants, but needing FR for work I ordered some pants in my usual size 36x34 and my lord the length was more like a 42 lol, I had my wife hem them, Ariat is comparable and true to size as far as FR pants go, carhartt needs to QC their FR line better as far as sizing, ordered a large Carhartt Detroit FR jacket and it was more like a 3xl lol wtf I had to send it back

I’m with you on the Armstrong. I seen one on the video though that looked very similar. It may actually be the same one as Carhartt dropped all the old names of their jackets a few years ago and gave them all new very similar weird names now. Supposed to be “easier” for the customer but I think it makes it much more difficult.

Do any of these jackets have hoods that aren’t oversized for a hard hat or helmet? I’ve tried two, and the hood is so large that it’s unusable.

Why does no one talk about how tight the neck is. Cant zip it all the way up without putting the hood on. It’s so annoying feeling. But other than that I absolutely love the Montana. Or is it just me?
