I enjoyed your reaction, and I know nothing about instruments. Thank you for the explanation of the things Pau was describing. The Warning ladies sure have a way about them. I'm sure I'm not the only non-musician who watches all of these videos about instruments, and who listens to musicians like yourself and enjoys learning about things I did not have interest in before discovering The Warning. I used to hate percussion; I hated a prominent drum beat in a song, as well as a strong base element. Then I heard Pau sing Dust to Dust and that changed everything. I became a fan of the band; I now appreciate the percussion elements of a song, as well as the bass; and I pay attention to how all three ladies play their instruments.

Rediscovered the first public set they did back in May 2014 (months before the Cave version of E.S. was recorded) and I'm still amazed at how violently 12yo Pau attacks her drum kit. Those poor people sitting at the front must have suffered a bit. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3STnKirntpoibc

Yes! She really took to the instrument at such a young age. She’s still a hard hitter now, but it’s naturally part of her style at this point. She started off right.

Nice review Jesse!! Always good to hear your technical and artistic insights and opinions!! I wish Pau's review was longer and more detailed... I wrote a super super long comment 2 days ago and I don't know why it got deleted, was it me or what...? Aww!! I'm sad cuz it took me quite some effort...😱😤😠😠😭😭🤷 I'll summarize a little here. ==> 1.- Update (i). A recent change after so many years: Pau is not using the closed High-hat cymbal to the right anymore, at least it wasn't there on the last shows of this year that I watched. I saw it wasn't there on the VMA's but now I think she just took it away from her set. ==> 2.- Update (ii). I also noticed they're no longer using the overhead mics but individual mics for each cymbal instead. Sure it's an upgrade allowing a more detailed mix but it must be a real pain to set all that up, right? ==> 3.- EFFECTS CYMBALS. The "CHINA" and the little "TIN CRASH" are not used a whole lot but play very distinctive parts in several songs. ==> 4.- Actually, I think the toms, at least the floor toms are tuned to a pitch. Dany said so somewhere and also I remember hearing a floor tom playing the same pitch as the bass, at least at some point but I can't recall the song (s) now. ==> 5.- HISTORY. I remember she used to have the "Tin Crash" cymbal on the front center and the "China" to the left many years ago. In the begining she also had a tambourine and a cowbell but to the left. ==> 6.- SETTINGS. It always grabbed my attention how she has everything very low (makes sense as she's very short) and so flat, almost dead horizontal except for a little tilt on the China, and this goes counter to being small...must be cause her show, she sings a lot, speaks and directs the crowd, etc... she's such a show. Also she has everything very much to the sides, even the air toms. ==> 7.- PAU'S PLAYING. To me what stands out the most is the CONSISTENCY you always mention... really incredible! The snare always exactly the same sound...ta- ta -ta...many people don't realize about this. And all that's been said a lot: Then her crispy sound, her melodic and colorfull writing/arranging,...always as needed rather than showin off... And her singing-drumming...high level, especially her voice (and breath) control on the low notes is top level. On my deleted comment I elaborated a lot on examples of the use of effects cymbals (nomber 3.-) and on number (4.-)... but maybe later... Merry Cristmas and have a very very good year 2024!!!❤️❤️🎉🎊🎄🎄🎉🎉♥️♥️🤟🏻🤟🏻

She didn't cover one piece of her kit that I'm very impressed with.... her mic. How it can be sensitive enough to catch the expressiveness of her voice and not be overwhelmed by the sound of her drums baffles me. Thanks for the reaction.
@michaelpohlgeers321411 ай бұрын
Pretty sure they mainly built the rack, because Carlos didn't want to spend the entire show trying to keep her kit from falling apart any more 😀There are so many shows where he constantly runs over to fix cymbals, the snare or the kickdrum. Pau hits it like a truck and that kit sounds awesome.

DW needs to make a snare drum as good as the Black Beauty, call it the Paulina Villarreal model, and make her a DW artist. Being even nominated for best drummer should wake up DW’s marketing department. Heck, she even calls herself “a DW girl”.

Loved everything she did explain about, but really hoped to hear her mention more about the Mic's, cable routing, spare stick tube, feet on the loose items, & the different substrate surfaces. That is is only one of three kits she uses as well. That White kit is the one she uses in the US & CAN, and stores in in the states. Her Black kit is for home shows, and those abroad. She has another kit setup in the Cave at home. She is such a pro too. Just like a seasoned Nascar driver at the end of a race, she lists off her sponsors, and drives home the new song "MORE".
@rjs61711 ай бұрын
In the Tedx performance they did of Survive, her left stick snaps in half at the beginning of the song, and she doesn’t have a stick bag, and after playing with half a stick for a little, she ends up dropping out the snare drum and digging around on the floor for a few measures and finally grabbing a new stick. In later performances, you can see her grab a new stick from somewhere convenient. So, she has it figured out, but you’re right, she didn’t show it here.
@gmantw11 ай бұрын
She had no issues finding a new stick in that Ted Talk performance. It was the earlier Liceo concert where she had a hard time. She uses a can, not a bag as well. @@rjs617

I agree with Pau, her 18" inch crash with the holes in it is also my favorite cymbal of hers. When playing the main riff closing section of Enter Sandman she starts off on the 16" for like two measures then goes to the 18" and it's just epic, like lightening coming out of a thunderstorm. Pau does some really cool stuff on the drums.
@monicamansour352511 ай бұрын
Exactly! How she goes darker when she goes to that cymbal (it's not quite a "crash" cymbal though). She has a nice tone color game with the cymnals as wel as with the toms, brilliant! I wrote a lengthy comment here, at the end I give some examples of the use of cymbals in Pau's drumming but only about the "effects cymbals", in case you wanna check it out. 😉🤟🏻
@monicamansour352511 ай бұрын
Oh man!! I think it was deleted somehow....I can't believe it...oh well, I mighy repost a shorter version later. That cymbal with holes is an "Expression Ozone Cymbal", I think that's the exact name but it's a kind of "effects cymbal".
@Chuckles..11 ай бұрын
@@monicamansour3525 yea it's the eight hole Sabien crash, I think it's the "Sabian 18 Area 51 Prototype XSR O-Zone Crash". An "effects" cymbal is a good description. It cuts through everything without losing it's tone, amazing sounding cymbal.
