YesterKitchen It’s something my grandmother has always made (the version with nuts, fruit, and marshmallows) for holidays, parties, showers, etc. She was a housewife of the 70s, so I always assumed it was in one of her many funky 60s-70s cookbooks. It might just be a regional dessert (southern Colorado), though I’ve never known anyone else to make it. I’ll have to ask her about it :) 💕

Many years back whenever I mentioned it (in a border city very close to the state and town I grew up in) no one had ever heard of it. Now I've found a few nouveau (?) chefs who have it in their cookbooks. My father's mother would sometimes make it. It can be made with milk or water. It is a simple and quick recipe. I absolutely love what is known as Frog Eye Salad. A lot of people say it's like an Ambrosia salad, but it's not. Frog Eye Salad is made with the tiny balls of pasta called Acini de Pepe which gives it the look of frog eyes. 😂 It has an overall flavor of a pina colada with pineapple chunks, shredded coconut, mandarin oranges and mini marshmallows. The binder is a vanilla pudding, coconut creme mixture, and whipped topping. Ever heard of it? It's so delicious...I always eat way too much when it gets made.😋

I think in 20 years from 1970 to 1990, I ate this once. Lol No one I ever knew served it... However..you asked about favorite jello desserts.. Marie Callendar's was not only a freezer brand, they had their own restaurants. I grew up in California and we often went on special occasions. They had a pie called double cream apple blueberry and I adored it. When I removed most carbs from my diet, saved my life...my better half went to recreate his perfect mock replica into low sugar version. Sugar free cheesecake pudding is one of the main components. Add sour cream, blueberries, a nut crust. Oh my. To this day if I need cheesecake but don't want to bake a low carb one, we will whip up that jello, a dollop of sour cream and eat it with warmed blueberries. Sometimes we will sprinkle coconut, pecans or pistachios....it's close enough and makes for one happy girl.

What a great video! I have never heard of this “Salad” before. We are not too adventurous about puddings here in Germany, so I love the standard vanilla one :) thanks for sharing!

It was from the Watergate Hotel, my sister lived there, and she was friends with the chef, she used to make it too often. I refuse to use Cool whip, and I don't like Pistachio pudding as a retired chef, puddings are made from scratch.

Hi Kate! I do agree that scratch cooking is wonderful! And so very 1930s and 40s ! But I am so in love with retro dishes from the past and all their fabulous convenience ingredients. How cool about your sister!

From the 1977 Knox Gelatine Cookbook, Grasshopper Grabs. I very often eliminate thr liquor by using mint chocolate chip ice cream From the same book. Cupid's Cherry Pie. And, if you use chocolate sandwich cookie for the crust? Um. I'm not sorry I can't talk, my hands are full.

Hey Jill, I just bought a few recipe guides from the 40's and several of the recipes contain irradiated milk. Could you do an episode about the history of irradiated milk and the recipes developed by the dairy industry to sell more product? That would be awesome!
@yesterkitchen
@yesterkitchen 4 жыл бұрын
Irradiated milk is evaporated milk with vitamin D added via ultra violet light. The name has morphed to evaporated because irradiated suggests radiation and evaporated sounds much better. It was used quite a bit during the 1940's, especially during WW2, with many companies incorporated it into recipes for ration cookbooks, which may be what you have. Here's an episode I did all about that and war ration cooking and using evaporated milk kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5TVp6x4jMx5ldE. Also... 🙂.... take a peek at my Noodle Ring episode ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/mprSmGynbsmKd8U ) which is right out of 1945 and uses evaporated milk. You can substitute evaporated milk in any of your new found recipes that calls for irradiated milk. I hope this helps!!! 💖🍸 And CONGRATS on finding some cookbook gold!!!

Hey, Jill! I've got a mystery for you. In the seventies my mother used to make a pistachio pudding cake that involved a box of cake mix, two, I think, boxes of Jell-O Pistachio Pudding and the rest is a mystery. I've looked every where for the recipe to no avail. It was a two layer cake, super-super moist and the frosting was green, too, so I think a box of the pudding mix went into that as well as the cake. Pistachios weren't easy or cheap to come by in those days, so she would add extra nuts by way of chopped pecans or walnuts. Any chance that you can hunt this one up? I know it had to be simple because my mother was talentless in the kitchen unless it involved very specific instructions and ingredients...

PS: I think that Cool Whip was probably involved as well. I did see one recipe for a 9"x13" cake that was about 4 to 5 inches tall, but it was way too complicated and mother's was only a 9" round two layer cake and it was fantastic. Most of her recipes that ever worked were from the newspaper or a magazine... Hope this helps, because if you get the easy way to do it you will have made not just me, but a whole lot of people happy...it truly was spectacular!
