the night he died i laid under my kitchen table and played this song-his version-over and over. i don't know why i wept so hard, old men die every day. it was pure selfishness, his life was full and accomplished. i pitied my own stupid self that i'd never hear another new cohen song, or read another poem he'd written. i used "if it be your will" to remind me that there was so much more life in those words and their meanings than one body or life could hold. i'll play leonard cohen records for my son. i'll read him his poetry. that beauty-born of nervousness and hurt-will live on long after, if it be his will.

Too bad Leonard writes and records with Sharon and Anjani when he could be utilizing the Webb Sisters and Jennifer Warnes more. A too bad he uses cheesy synth and electric guitar sounds in his recent music when he could go back to traditional ethnic instrumentation...or at least take notes from Johnny Cash and Tom Waits on how to write cool music when you're old.
