I love fake/bootleg things so much, and its so fun to see something as iconic as Barbie filtered through bootleg processes. As someone who grew up with bootleg toys, that toxic plastic smell made my immune system stronger, I'm sure 😂

Mattel actually had sold Barbie dolls in bags 😂, in 1973 because of the oil crisis in the US, they even sold only Barbie heads separately. It’s funny that Mattel has done what knock off dolls still do to this day in Mattel’s case because of technology limitations or historic issues but they are not far now 😅

I remember that, as I was a little girl in 1973, and I had a bodyless Barbie head too. The quality of the dolls were the same as those that came in boxes. I wasn't aware that it was done because of the oil crisis, so that's interesting!

I'm from Argentina and its really difficult to get barbies around here. We come along lots of fake versions... My daughter always gets some for her birthday as presents... There are some though that are really good actually, but others... Well... The skinny legs are the worst. I once ordered some from the USA and she loves them. They're the best!

With all due respect (after all, I had a platinum bubble cut Barbie!!), those knock-off Barbies serve a purpose. I have a daughter and 3 of my 5 grandkids are girls. They all began whining for Barbie from the time they could understand "toy aisle". I bought my daughter knockoffs until she was about 8 and I do the same for the grandgirls now. If they are really into a specific one, I'll buy it along with a knockoff and put the authentic one away until they are older. Knockoff Barbarics have had haircuts, amputations, makeovers with Sharpies, and "hand-sewn" fashions held together by long basting stitches from loving chubby children's hands. When they got Authentic Barbie, they were old enough to appreciate her, the clothes. The accessories, the play sets.

About 20 years ago I was in Mexico City and found fake Barbie and Ken dolls in plastic bags on a street market. Now these were really made with what appears to be Mattel reject dolls. They had Superstar Barbie and Ken faces and bodies. They were neatly made and wearing traditional Mexican outfits. I regret not grabbing them. Also, Barbic! Is that an attempt to blend Barbie and terrific? 😁
