@johnwaters3360

In the 60s, I was always puzzled by this line. I thought it was strange if his girlfriend did the washing better than his mum, as this line implies. Only recently did it occur to me, perhaps the writer of the song was one of the people who confuse "substitute" with "replace". "Replace you with my mum" would make much more sense - although, of course, it would not scan!

The Who were thoughtful, intelligent, edgy, straight ahead rockers, sometimes 'mods,' and each member was a master of his instrument. For Pete and Roger, their voices were also their instruments. Pete's songwriting often showed a superior intellect. This band was not afraid to push the boundaries of propriety. Just look at the cover of their album, Who's Next. I became a Who fan somewhat later in life, introduced to them by a dear high school friend. Getting to know the progression of the Who's music has been a great journey.

@Knut Rosetten Jaco was technically better but not musically. Jazz solo music sucks, no matter how much of a master the player is. Its meaningless. Bass only sounds meaningful in a supporting role in a song. Same with drums. Jaco isn't well known for good reason.
@anthonypuccetti8779
@anthonypuccetti8779 2 жыл бұрын
@Knut Rosetten He isn't a better player musically because he didn't make better music. Using the bass guitar as a virtuoso solo instrument is in bad taste. That's not proper to bass guitars. He wouldn't have wanted to play in a rock band and he wouldn't have fit in with one. He was a jazz snob. Its much better to be a good player in a great band that plays great songs than a virtuoso who plays experimental music that has no human interest or expressive meaning.

This song was released 4 years before I was born. I am now 52 years old and still love the Who. I grew up listening to them, and their songs never get old or out dated. I was never really a Beatles fan, but the Who, that is a whole other story. I saw a commercial when I was about 6 or 7 on TV advertising a the Who album and there was footage of Pete and Keith smashing their instruments up, and they had me hooked!

Keith Moon had an awesome kick drum which is what really made him a great drummer. I hear so many drummers who can't get that right but Moon did. Same with Bonham, as long as you got that kick and can do it in time you can pretty much do anything else. Listen to the middle part of this song "Im a substitute for another guy" it sounds like a Harley davidson in idle BAM BAM BAM BAM

This band is so under rated. I know they were huge... But they deserved to be more huge, and they should still be raved about today. Even as much as The Beatles. This song sounds like so many other 60s pop rock songs which I think was their intention (it is a parody), but there is an edge to this that other songs of that time rarely had. Those lyrics... And there is a depression in the melody which is really strange and wonderful. I love the Beatles too but this band deserves talking about as much. They did the same progression as The Beatles too. Started with simple 60s rock n roll pop songs like this but later did advanced more proggy stuff too, like Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, etc.

As someone in their mid 20s, I always took them a bit for granted as just another dad rock band. Even when I started getting turned onto 60s music, I only dug their singles and never dug deeper. Finally a couple years ago I watched "The Kids Are Alright" and I was fucking blown away. Now I get it. It's always cute to see the gang in their early mod days knowing the powerhouse that the band would be later on.
