Two real takeaways from prohibition. 1: Prohibition (ANY prohibition) doesn't work. 2: Criminals don't give a s**t what laws you pass because criminals don't follow your laws.

Monte M. Lemann was the only commission member who refused to sign the Wickersham report, issuing a separate opinion, where he concluded that there was "no alternative but repeal of the [Eighteenth] Amendment." So there was one intelligent gentleman on the Commission.

Corporate structure and Brand Transfer is always fascinating to me... JTS Brown is one of the founders of Brown - Foreman (though the history of the B-F corp seems to be disputed by some), yet Brown - Forman sells one of their namesake brands to a rival distillery?

Man, it sucks that I haven't seen this as the Navy Exchange. As for criminals with guns - they've always had them - and yes, in the same styles and grades as the Army (in fact, often the very same models). The idea that firearms are somehow an exclusively military item is very recent in history. What was new was the degree of organization of the criminals. Prohibition is evidence that people will always be stupid, but only government can make us all be stupid together, sometimes against our will. That said, the discussion of the reasons behind prohibition would be a good one to hold for your next dry week.

The reason that America had a huge problem with alcoholism prior to prohibition was that water wasn't safe to drink. It was only after germ theory because a thing that water supplies started to be purified. Alcohol, by it's nature, was microbe free and thus safe to drink. That's why even little kids drank. The problem would have resolved itself anyways over the same time period without prohibition because water quality controls were put into place that allowed for clean, drinkable water.

I do like JTSB 100 but I agree with others that Evan Williams BiB is noticeably better for like $2 more. Heaven Hill def puts out some amazing sub $20 whiskey!

Famous federal prohibition agent Izzy Einstein bragged he could find alcohol in any city in America. He set his record in New Orleans with 35 seconds. Upon arriving in New Orleans, he asked the taxi driver where he could find a drink. The taxi driver turned around and handed him one.

Not quite as good in my opinion. Evan Williams BiB is a year older and has some complexity that the JTS doesn’t. But still a good whiskey!

Some of my favorite parts about the history of whiskey, and alcohol in general, is how it affected EVERYTHING around it. Understanding WHY prohibition happened is vital to anyone who consumes alcohol in an unhealthy manner. Prohibition happened because of the rampant misuse of alcohol. The Women's Suffrage movement happened, because there was a rampant misuse of alcohol. It is vital information that is completely overlooked in our basic understanding of that time period in history. 🖖😎🥃
