I too was taken in by these false messages at a time when I was working, making a very meager amount, struggling to pay the rent. Looking back, it filled me with such fear and guilt. I used to admonish myself, ‘if I just had more faith and gave more, life would not be so hard’. I realize now that my difficult circumstances were not due to my own lack of giving. My ignorance of Scripture made me a vulnerable target for this type of expositing. That was many years ago, and thankfully the Lord has graciously and patiently guided me through the Bible, increasing my hunger and thirst for His Word. I recently heard that message by John MacArthur, and was amazed that I’d never heard it preached in that way in 40 years, and yet as I study God’s Word in it’s entirety it is clear that you are right in your exegesis. God bless you Caleb for once again speaking truth from God’s Word. I greatly appreciate your teachings.

That’s exactly what I keep thinking every time I hear somebody say this. shouldn’t we as the church be helping them isn’t that our job instead of taking their money especially a church leader! Is that not what we’re supposed to be taking up money for? To help those in christ body that need it?

Pastor MacArthur had a sermon on this very matter. Jesus condemning this . Joyce Meyer had lecture on this very thing. The OT has examples where the prophet Elijah blessing a widow who had only enough oil- flour to feed her son and die. The Lord blessed her through the famine and later Elijah raised her son from the dead. Stark contrast

I knew a lady in a church I used to attend who was 80 and still working because she had to. She finally retired but had trouble making ends meet. Do I pay rent and pay bills or do I tithe she asked. She was conflicted. I told her to pay her bills because God wouldn't want her to lose her home. She was a faithful woman of God. It was a church that emphasized tithing and she felt really guilty. This upset me greatly. She was a widow who was struggling.

The widow's last mite is not about giving; I agree, thank you for the insight. This incident is being misused because of the concept of the church in buildings/as an organisation/ club etc. full of clubish activities instead of obedience to the Great Commission of Jesus and His commands.

Thank you for the notes, Caleb. I am supposed to generously support the church (I am a widow) while pastor drives a luxury car and lives in a fine house. This is a big part of why people are turned off by the church and don't attend, which is so very sad. What would Jesus say....

Agreed. I'm having a hard time now finding a place I trust. A big part of it is these falsehoods I'm finding out about now. I just choose organizations and causes to give to that I KNOW are helping the people (e.g. feeding stations, incarcerated prisoners I know, warming centers, soup kitchens, or abortion repeal). That way I know my coin

I heard a pastor at the church I went to at the time, say "put in a month's salary and God will give you back tenfold", like God would provide us a receipt or something. I heard another pastor tell the story of how a friend of his decided he was going to give 20% and within 6 months his income had doubled. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, right? Why settle for a double when I can have a triple! Why settle for a triple when ... :) What's the rule, one double every 3 years? 3 doubles per lifetime? Maximum multiplication of 4? I hope you attached a note to your $5 and pleaded with him to redirect it to the poor. :)

I used to be Catholic. Once a month, my former church would take up a "widow's mite" collection. The children did it at the end of mass. They would run up, and grab a tin pail, then walk amongst the pews, as the congregation dropped coins into the pails. The idea was the hear the coins clanging as they dropped into the bucket. Most of the children seemed to enjoy it, and the congregants happily dropped their spare change it in. It really was sick manipulation of the cutest of the children now that I reflect back on it.
@rafal2959
@rafal2959 Жыл бұрын
The Catholic church has no requirement to tithe. People are expected to provide the material needs of the diocese to their ability if they are able. Unlike mega churches and protestant pastors, priests are obliged to live a life of simplicity (e.g. without trappings of wealth). The pope rents a plane when he travels, while many mega-church pastors own their own jets. The Catholic church also tends to recommend to split one's giving between the church and other charitable giving. I'm sorry for you that you found such an innocent practice at your church to be a sick manipulation. The only mite boxes or mite collections I have ever seen as a Catholic are passed around during lent and the money is to go to the poor.

How did I not see that?! Mark 12:41-44. I've been taught the wrong interpretation all these decades. The historical context is vital, what was happening at the time. David Pawson said verses should not be pulled out singly, that one must read and know the whole story. Bless you, Caleb, for this teaching.

It’s this video that is teaching you incorrectly. THE LAW OF TITHING COMES FROM GOD. FALSE CHURCHES AND FALSE PREACHERS TODAY HAVE CORRUPTED THIS LAW. God introduced the Law of Tithing from the beginning with Adam and Eve. Cain killed Abel because God was more pleased with Abel’s offerings. It matters to God that you give your all to him. Do you notice that this channel never mentioned the true word of God as to the greater teachings of Tithing involving Abraham, Malachi and such. They just pick apart scriptures and cut and paste to fit their talking points. We must read and understand correctly ALL scriptures. Here are some, but not all of those scriptures they left out. MALACHI 3: 7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Leviticus 27: 30 “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord. 31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. 32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.” MATTHEW 23: 23 “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” NEHEMIAH 10: 38 “And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.” Do not be deceived by this video on this channel. God do not lie. He will curse those whom rob him of tithes and offerings. However, don’t give it to the false churches. Pray to find the only church Jesus created and give only to that church. They do not pay any of the Bishops a salary. We do not believe you should be paid a salary to preach. It’s not Biblical to pay a pastor to preach. He must work his own job and pay his own tithes and offerings.

These guys turn everything into giving ... as long as they are on the receiving end. Give them enough time and even Paul's chains in the Gospel will be turned into an opportunity to redirect funds toward themselves. And, yes, many of them would actually take the widow's last mite and send her out on the street homeless while they fair sumptuously in a home well above the median in their locale.

Robert morris always teaches to tithe, he filled in at my old church and it was about tithing and how he wouldn’t let his daughter marry a man that didn’t tithe, he even bragged about having them verify that he did tithe. I couldn’t believe that. He abused his power and had the church staff look into it, and told our entire congregation. He was so proud too. I used to tithe quite a lot as a single mother who hardly got child support. Thankfully I was able to function, but it certainly wasn’t easy. We had to go without quite often. I only had $50 a week for groceries for years when my daughter was young. I read in the Bible where tithing was of the first fruits of the land and the church said that our first fruits is our money, so I went with it. They also had us study the purple book, where it listed the scripture: “Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.” ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬ “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬ Also Ed Young wears only the finest clothes and shoes, clothes/ shoes from Italy. He referred to his truck all the time like he was humble, but it was not an actual truck, it was a Hummer. He lives in a mansion too, and pretends it’s a normal house. That church always “blessed” rich ppl with trips and such. They would take you to the winners house on camera and the winners were doing very well on their own and could afford the trips themselves. It was sickening. I ended up leaving after volunteering on the stage crew, you got to see everything and we were told under no circumstances talk to Ed unless he approached us. Then learning about everything else, I was turned off. I’m not one to sit down with a pastor, but I think I should be allowed to if I wanted. The love of money sealed the deal for me. I saw they never wanted to help the real needy, just the ppl that helped the church. Then I found another church that was small, and sadly it became a mega church as well, thankfully I left that place and no longer look for these types of churches. I’m so over the concert, prosperity gospel church. It’s still hard to find a Bible believing church. I believe it needs to be like The Way in Jesus day, home churches.

@@txwarriorbride5112 that is exactly how they run it, they ofc didn’t tell us any of that as we were stage crew, but it didn’t take long to figure it out. And I was a new believer too. It was horrendous how they “helped” the “needy”, always people of influence, and prominent in the church. They literally took videos to reward these people at their homes, and their homes were high dollar homes. I was a struggling single mom who barely able to pay her bills, and they blessed people who could afford theirs. It was sickening. I took a good girl friend of mine to one of his book signings and was mortified when he acted like a celebrity and talked down to my friend who wasn’t a believer. It was embarrassing, I left shortly thereafter. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I can’t imagine how many ppl he has hurts by his behavior and actions over the years, and pray ppl don’t judge God by his and his church’s actions.

We have to clearly avoid giving too much to pastors, religious institutions. The pastors, the religious institutions are in fact hvg more than enough! Many of them are money making machines, fleecing the people in the name of Jesus! Let's find rather the poor & contribute acc to our capacity with God's knowledge alone. This type of giving, will definitely bring blessings upon us. Jesus alone is doubtlessly the ONLY GATEWAY TO HEAVEN, let me not delay in accepting Him as my Lord n Saviour lest I may forfeit the ultimate heavenly bliss with Him for eternity.

Very good analysis of the text and its implication to the culture. There's just one issue that comes to the forefront. Given that the NT is a house church, which you encourage, why then do you cite John McArthur, since his church is a mega church? While it doesn't seem to proclaim a gospel of greed, McArthur is still promoting the mega church concept with large buildings, salaried pastors, etc. While I personally like much of what John McArthur says or doctrine, his praxis (or implementation) needs an adjustment, don't you think?

I agree with your study, I'll say that in SC 8:14,15 we see Paul is saying that all the wealth should be equally distributed, very similar to Acts 4, but have we followed this as a body ,do ministers dare preach this passage and then get into their town car and drive off to their estate. And what would the rich say as they set on their assigned seats, would you hear amen or this only applies to those under law, amen amen amen, lol. This all hasn't come to pass because this portion is prophesy after the reserection of the dead everything changes, there won't be any more women preaching, the leaders that make ship wreck the faith are delivered up to Satan so as to learn not to blaspheme. Paul's gospel is written in a microcosm, in that what he is saying to Corinth he's saying to every church where the leaders have made shipwreck that if I come again I will not spare. He's speaking of judgement. The only reason he would come is for judgement that's why he says if I come again. Mind you he has not yet made his third visit.

I wish that I heard this when I was widowed 14 years ago. Our pastor at that time was a money hungry bully, and he coerced me into giving around 50 Thousand dollars of the money my husband left me. I thought my finances would be cursed if I didn't. It seemed every other sermon was about MONEY! The next pastor was the same-- tithe, tithe, tithe! He asked to be wealthy so he "would have more to give"! Turned out he was helping himself to every penny of the money given to "the church" , spending it on himself and neglecting to pay the mortgage payments on the church building. Very disillusioning! Now I know to trust in no man, pastor or not. I trust in Jesus for my salvation, and have learned to read the word for myself.

I'm having a hard time now finding a church home I trust because of all this false teachings and moneychangers. My trust is damaged. I don't want my money wasted. Until I find a place, I think it best to choose organizations and causes to give to that I KNOW are helping the people (e.g. feeding stations, incarcerated prisoners I know, warming centers, soup kitchens, or abortion repeal). That way I know my coin isn't being squandered.

I am faced with these false teachings again and again at my church that I love. Recently we did the whole tithing thing along with a 90 day tithe challenge. I am so wounded by this teaching as I know it is false. Before they taught giving as worship and in private, we do not pass an offering plate at my church. I was so grateful that we gave as according to 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, it was a wonderful freeing act of worship. Now I am beside myself as to what to do. It seems like every church in my area teaches the same nonsense, and bad hermeneutics. The more I learn the more grieved my heart is, so much so that it has become a real stumbling block for me. My spouse and I don't want to leave the church, and if we did there is no place else to go for fellowship in our area, they all teach the same thing. I thought my church was different until two weeks ago. Any advice?

Asking for giving from government assistance is disgusting. That isn't income, that is as the name implies, assistance. Robert Morris and his megachurch buddies will never give sacrificially. They will give their pocket change from their income and rest on their vast wealth. But those in their congregations have to give sacrificially from their income and have no such wealth to rest on.

You could also use the widow as a type of believing Israel. To believe in Christ is to give everything one has. To love Him more then manna. Isaiah 54 “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.”

Just an additional thought, but the 700 Club pushed this hard, too. I know, bc I used to watch it all the time. It permeated the culture in the West, through far-reaching television ministries. I drive by this guy's church every Sunday, and they got cops all over directing traffic. If they weren't fooled and went to smaller churches then the cops could concentrate on other activities. Sunday morning should be the busiest day of the week, but not all to mega churches.

Jesus speaks both admiration for the widow who would give all her money in self sacrifice and judgment to those who would cause her to think that was God’s will for her, at the same time. Those that have should cheerfully give and those that have not should thankfully receive. God is blessed by sacrifice and thanks giving. Give all you have thank God for all you receive.

The basis for the story of the widows giving... isn't an example of the predatory polity which was not mentioned in the story. The story is a contrast between the spiritual condition of those who give out of their abundance and those who give out of their need (need to give/need to be a part of...). Yes, I agree, we do not have a good handle on the subject of giving. Yes, I agree, as Christians we are not obligated to tithe. Paul however spoke of a prerogative he was entitled to not as a Jew but as a servant in Christs church. He voluntarily dismissed that prerogative feeling that it might hinder the effectiveness of his delivery of the Gospel. Instead he chose to supplement his living by making tents. Passing the collection plate... is not theft.

There is no record that Jesus and the widow had any interaction, so this was used to show to His disciples what sacrificial giving looked like. She gave freely not under compulsion! What happened to her after this incident we are not given any information. Good point raised about the pharisees and their attitude to poor widows etc. I'd go further and say that manipulating people regarding 'tithing' is part of this devouring as well. Listen to Rick Joyner joking about how to spell 'million'.

Also. The Scriptures do not record how the widow was/was not blessed after she made her sacrificial offering. Did she suddenly fall into great wealth? Did she continue to live in her poverty? Probably the latter - but -

There are also other biblical views and scripture to show that you should give to the church. The moral of this story is that the rich gave with pride in their hearts, and the box that collected these offerings had a trumpet-shaped receptacle to collect taxes or yearly tithings to the temple to help build it. The problem is that they used these receptacles to show off how much they were giving the more they put in, the louder it was for others to hear. The widow gave and no one in the court (women's court AKA treasury) took care of the widow as scripture says. the same scripture that told these rich and wise men that God would kill them if they denied or did not take care of these widows or take from them. This story is not about money, but IT IS ABOUT GIVING! It's about the giving of our hearts. How much of your livelihood are you giving to the Lord. How much time are you willing to give to God, Money, Relationships, and things that people would normally place above God. David himself said who are we to give what already belongs to God? Yes, we must give tithes to the church, but if it's not from the heart, then you might as well not give at all! Not just money, but time and love. Give your time to God, give what you can to the church to help with the upkeep, not to make the pastor wealthy, Take care of the widows and orphans, and do not try to negotiate what already belongs to God..... your life, your time, and your love. Money belongs to Ceasar, give Ceasar what belongs to him, but Christ did not deny giving to the temple. A collector came to ask for collections and one of his apostles gave for Jesus. Jesus then in frustration looked at him and said, don't you get it?! You gave what belonged to me already! Look at the parable of the fish and coin. So yes, we still must give to the church what we can give, but the moral is to give with a cheerful heart, not that you HAVE to give, but give because you WANT to give. Where is your heart when you give? That will Glorify God!
