Chill. It's not about making him look bad it's just a joke. It's just playing along with the logic of the story. The husband planned on waiting til the wife went to sleep. He then laughs. That makes it pretty clear he didn't want her to know about the PS4 because of the cost. The OP just takes that and the idea that he too can read minds to "solve" the problem. It's actually kind of cute, IMO. It's not all that different from how things can work out when you've lived with someone for decades. At that point you can sort of read each other *and* you learn to let the little stuff go and enjoy your partner.

I think the worst part about this is that saying what he said IRL can never be as meaningful as getting your mind read while thinking of it. When said aloud it can come off less meaningful, ingratiating, over-the-top, or even be read as attempting to butter them up, a kiss ass. It would only work so often, if at all. However getting your mind read by your SO will make it meaningful every single time. A sad reality.
