A lack of HDMI wasnt the problem; it was the lack of 1080 resolution. The Wii already had Component Video Cables that could support 1080, but the Wii just wasn't built to process that high of a resolution. Now, I don't know if those cables could support 1080p or not, but they definitely support 1080i, which is the same resolution, but with twice the frame rate.

Or even 720p since most PS3, 360, Wii U and Switch games are closer to 720p than 1080p.

@@everygamersdream72 True. And I think they were still selling 720p and 1080i TVs at the time. But 480p was seen as unacceptable. Especially...when distorted by a 720 or 1080 screen...

I remember being 12 years old and learning about the component cable for Wii and how it gave better picture quality. My dad told me I couldn't buy one but eventually I did anyways. And I was so excited on the way home about playing Wii with a real crisp HD resolution on the 50" plasma tv we had in the basement. I get home, plug it in and boot it up and… it looks like shit! I could not tell any difference in picture quality, even swapping back and forth in the settings. I thought there was something wrong with the cable but later figured out that it was still only 480p and that this is not HD. I felt scammed. I paid like $20 for that thing and I was 12!

@@mronewheeler Oof... But it's still nice to have. It allows for double the frame rate at least, and a more stable image, cleaner image. But the biggest upgrade would simply be...downgarding to a 480 TV, sadly. I don't get why they chose 720 and 1080 over the more obvious 960.

If for nothing else, I'll always appreciate the Wii U for giving my wife and I hundreds of hours of entertainment with Hyrule Warriors. That game took so long to fully complete all of the adventure mode maps, and my wife and I always enjoyed relaxing after working all day to just play for an hour or two before bed. My wife has some vision problems, so she actually greatly enjoyed having a whole screen to herself, so playing on the Switch was never quite the same for us, unfortunately (though we *did* try). It's a shame my Wii U doesn't work anymore because I didn't turn it on enough. It gives some kind of disc reader error, even without a disc in the drive, which means some filter on the board went bad. I should find a repair shop to fix it so we can relive 10 years ago, lol.

Positives: Wii U has a wonderful GUI, it’s backwards compatible with Wii and had some incredible 1st party games. It’s eShop was well thought and easy to navigate, search and had offerings from NES, SNES, GBA, DS, N64, Wii and many indie games and eShop exclusives found nowhere else. Additionally you could transfer your Wii Virtual Console games to the Wii U allowing you to play games from more consoles and handhelds than any other console without modding. It was a commercial failure, yes mostly due to Nintendo’s inability to market it properly but the Wii U was a great piece of hardware

Nintendo learned an important lesson with the wiiu. It doesn't matter what your console looks like, if you crank out tons of new games of classic Nintendo ips and re-release the older stuff regularly, it will sell. They didn't do that enough with the wiiu.

I followed gaming news everyday back then and even I wasn't sure if WiiU was a new controller for the Wii because I never saw the system. I was confused even after I found out it was a new console for the first time, a whole year before Sony or Microsoft announced theres. I think most casual people must have thought the same thing. I can't wait to see how they handle the Switch successor.

I dont think so, having the word "Wii" hurts the marketting of the Wii U, since the Wii had a lot of accessories always having the word "Wii" as the first word, so it caused a lot of confusion.

@@ToonyTalesX Something like "Nintendo Feel", the Wii already had a LOT of accessories, so putting the meaning Wii in it would make people think it's another Wii accessory, the meaning "Wii U" does make a lot of sense if you think about it, but otherwise, it's a such stupid name that Nintendo are becoming like Microsoft giving the Xbox consoles dumb names. The fact that Wii remotes were compatible with the Wii U demonstrates that the Wii U is basically just a Wii with a gamepad, Nintendo didn't even bother to change the Wii remote design a bit to make it look more like a brand new console. The Wii U definetely isn't a bad console, but it fails to be the Wii's successor in many aspects.
