The wild comeback finish to the 2000 Lakers-Blazers playoff series deserves a deep rewind

Before there was a Lakers dynasty, there was a crucial moment in the final minute of Game 7 of LA's 2000 Western Conference Finals series against the Portland Trail Blazers. And before THAT, there was ... so much important background and context.
This episode of Rewinder covers what came before the moment. That includes the collapse of the Chicago Bulls dynasty that began after their third title in 1998. That includes the rise of Kobe and Shaq, their run through the 2000 playoffs, and the big lead the Lakers had in this series. It includes the fully formed Blazers Megatron, and their comeback from a 3-1 deficit. It includes a lot of whistles, and a tremendous fourth-quarter collapse.
The moment that punctuates all this is iconic, and to truly appreciate it, you've gotta rewind.

@Blue Skeptic did you see the game? Did you follow the season? Did you follow his career? He himself admitted he didn't have the clutch gene...he was more of a complimentary superstar who made everyone else better. He was not the player who could win a game by sheer force of will, he was the maestro who would create masterful games that involved everybody. That whole season, despite their great record, nobody on that team averaged more than 20 pts. Everyone embraced their roles and swallowed their pride because they were winning. It was great to see how many lineups that team threw out because all they cared about was moving the ball and overwhelming you with depth. If anything, that team embodied Pippen's playstyle. He didn't stand around...his team was a victim of Shaq and Kobe, bad officiating and mainly because they didn't have a single player who could take over the game like a McGrady, Kobe, MJ or Shaq.

Not a blazers fan and the refs gave them far more than that. Not a kings fan and they received the same treatment as Portland. Bad calls happen, it’s part of the game and isn’t usually such a deciding factor but those lakers teams benefited from some really awful officiating, it was egregious!

It’s been almost 20 years now. That game 7 loss was BY FAR the most most painful loss that I have ever experienced in my sports life! With the Lakers up 3-1 in the series with games 5 and 7 in LA if it even went that far, everybody was calling the series “OVER” taunting the Blazers. To come all the way back to the point where Portland had a 15 point lead with 10 minuets remaining in game 7, it was all right there!! To sit there and watch it all just crumble away was absolutely devastating being a lifelong Blazers fan! Even 20 years later it still bothers me whenever it’s brought up.

Personalities have gotten nastier and more aggressive now, to my dismay. The game itself had more physicality to it before, with hand-checking & rugged paint play. Although you didn't ever usually get ejected for starring at a ref in any era, Rasheed was clearly doing it to try an intimidate the ref in a bully fashion, already had a technical for something else, and had already been warned previously in this game to not do that.

NBA used to be really rigged & the deck was really stacked against the Blazers but David Stern was not having these guys representing the league. They were a rough bunch.
