Avon wanted Prop Joe dead for turning Stringer against him. He helped Marlo get to the connect because he thinks Marlo will kill Prop Joe as soon as he takes over. He symbolically asked for the same amount ($100,000) he lost to Prop Joe in the basketball game. Brilliant…

Watched everything from Kojak to hills street blues and up to better call Saul - the wire doesn’t take a cop side, or a dealer side - it just tells a story of the US at that time - brilliantly. Best crime/drama TV series ever - nothing comes close.

I've always liked the Season 5 intro the most tbh. Maybe not song wise but shots wise I think it's the best one which isn't exactly a easy feat. The final shot of Carcetti walking away is quite telling.

Formal stating that he believes the media is going to tell stories that the public *needs* to hear about is just another reason why I think this season along with the whole entire series is just so freaking great. The media controls our perceptions on various things and for a lot of people they only go on what the media gives them intel on along with HOW the media presents the details of the established intel. David Simon definitely went very much personal in this season but I see no lies that he told. I'm glad you guys are liking Season 5 so much. The first episode of this season gives a glimpse of what's to come and this episode fully introduces it all. From the themes to the main plot. I understand most people's criticisms on the season but personally it's my third favorite after 3 and 4. There's just so much to love about this season that the positives *far* outweigh the negatives imo. It's also another reason why The Wire is just simply one of the most unique shows ever put to television. It's a piece of art within the entertainment medium in general. Highly doubt we will ever get a TV show on this level of storytelling and details ever again. The whole entire sequence of Scott's and McNulty's encounters with the dead mom in her sleep pretty much sets the tone for Scott's character going forward. The wheelchair kid wasn't his first lie.

Bubs staying in his sister's basement is good realism to me. She'd have been stolen from by him in his early days of using. She would've seen his lying progress. When you're in his position and you're staying at people's houses they always say things like "no using inside the house" and you have to agree to it even though you know secretly you're going to have to.

Also shows that just like how Marlo doesn't see Avon as him, Avon in turn doesn't see Marlo as him either and stands his ground against him. He's just honorable enough to take his loss against Marlo non personal (all in the game after all) and respects that he's making a move against Prop Joe.

@@pievancl5457 I heard an interesting theory that a big part of people bulking up in prison is the high stress environment. When a person is put in a place where they see serious threats all around them, day after day, their body's natural response is to try to gain weight as part of a self defense thing. There's a logic to that but I dunno how true it is.

23:23 quick note about Sergei, and Eastern Bloc gangsters in general: one of their prison rules is that you don't support or help to maintain your own prison. It goes against Sergei's code to patronize the canteen, and he probably thinks that Marlo is a "suka" for putting money into the prison system via the canteen account.

I absolutely adore the interaction between Lester and Sydnor. Two different versions of police, two different good ones. Lester, a guy who has been ass-fucked by the systems for at least like 3 decades or some shit. Seen it up close in all those 13 years and four months for starters. He can't get a better feeling than legitimately chasing down a top level corrupt politician, one of the direct fucking reasons people are getting ass-fucked by the system. It's just the juiciest thing imaginable to him, and me for that matter haha. Lester is absolutely "cool Lester smooth" when he is working on this with a focused, small detail. Then Sydnor, an intelligent and good natured poh-leece. Some might say intelligent and natural poh-leece. He doesn't look as deep as Lester always, but he has got a ton of good moral compass and loyalty I'd say. It's not the first or last times that Sydnor takes something for the team because it's the right thing to do. So he takes it on, and he uses his intelligence and experience on the case in like a lil' Lester type thing. 😂 But also the fact that he still has a fucking hankering for Marlo. That raises him so much in my eyes. It's not a job anymore at that point, it is a passion.

The beef with Marlo was very personal for a lot of characters throughout the rest of the show which is why I think he's such a great villain. Characters like Bodie and McNulty willing to do anything that they have to in order to bring him down. It works for the viewers too since unlike Avon or the Barksdales in general I was actively rooting for the MCU to throw the bracelets on this psycho. At least I was personally lmao. Could not stand Marlo's evil ass.

Formal- first know that Carcetti is based off a real person Martin O’Malley. Let me set the scene with FBI guy and what’s happening with the US Attorney using what they showed and what’s happening in the background that they don’t show. Carcetti is a democrat and because he’s a white man who got elected in Baltimore the republicans see him coming so they don’t want to help him because the current governor of Maryland in the show is a republican. During the time the show takes place in George W. Bush was president and would’ve appointed the US Attorney who is also a republican. So Carcetti told him to go f*•k himself and now buddy don’t want to help. It’s ALL political

The drive by scene with Snoop is based on something real. Baltimore shootings are some of the most dangerous in the country. 1 in 3 people shot in Baltimore dies vs 1 in 10 for places like Chicago and L.A. People who study shooting crime think it's partly because they don't drive bys - shootings are up close and personal and the shooters finish off their targets.

@@mintjulius275 It definitely doesn't. Freamon I can understand people's criticisms but McNulty though...absolutely believable idc what anyone says. He's lied to get cases to go his way before (breaking the law in the process I might add) and we the audience are full aware of how messed up McNulty can get when he has his eyes set on a target. So this, while very extreme, doesn't detract entirely from his character. The *only* way the fake serial killer plot line even works is BECAUSE of McNulty. Like he knows marlo behind them 20-something bodies they pulled out them vacants, and yeah he might be principled, but at the end of the day if you wanna get shit done sometimes you gotta step outside the bounds to do it. Mfer got thrown into the pawn shop unit for 13 years and 4 months 'cause he was serious about this shit.
