In today's video, we put new wheels and bigger tires on the WJ! Watch to see what wheels and tires I got this time! Can we make 35s fit inside stock fenders with no cutting?

Looks great 👍🏿 . I have 35's as well but I wanted a LCG , so I went with a 5 in springs and sold my 8 in springs. IMHO wheeling is so much more pleasurable again. I like jacked up jeeps myself ( I drove one in high school back in the early 90's) but not on the trail.
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I agree 100%. LCG is absolutely the best way to go for offroad. Id definitely love mine to be a little lower, but overall, the 8" doesn't bother me that much. And with future plans, 8" should actually be a good height. It will eventually be getting a much wider stance and bigger tires. It should be plenty stable once its made it to that point.

How do you like 8 in and 35s I was thinking I might upgrade to 6.5 and 35s but wondering about the 8
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 2 жыл бұрын
I like it. I haven't had any problems with it. I was initially sent 6.5" front springs and had to get them exchanged for the 8" so had a chance to set them side by side and they aren't much different in length, but the 8" has thicker coils so a slightly stiffer rate. In the end, I think both are good options. But for me with minimal modifications, I'm clearing my 35s with ease through all of the suspension travel and lock to lock. There is also always the option of adding spacers to the 6.5" in the future if you decided you wanted to go higher as well.

@@engineeringoverland I have an 04 overland i bought with a iro 6.5 lift. you're saying I can just buy spacers to go to 8? dont want to trim a lot
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 2 жыл бұрын
@@sladegerman Yes you could add 1.5” spacers to get to 8” if you wanted. Just will have to make sure you adjust everything accordingly. Mainly pinion angles. Another thing to remember is the big difference between rubbing and not rubbing is wheel and tire specs. An aggressive offset will be more likely to rub.

@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 3 жыл бұрын
I am sitting at 8" of lift. I am not running any extended bump stops. Still factory. Basically the built in shock bump stops are my bumps right now, but I only ever hit bump throughout articulation, so I am not concerned with that right now. Actually haven't checked if my factory bumps contact at the same point as the shocks (may still be making use of the stock bumps too).
@miketee2444

I suggest everyone check the actual diameter of your brand of tire because they can vary over an inch. If I remember for instance Mickey T 33s are over 34"s where as swampers are roughly an inch smaller than indicated. It can be the difference between rubbing or not.
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 3 жыл бұрын
This is very true! The manufacturer website is typically the best source for this information, aside from simply measuring yourself upon receiving the tires. Every brand varies. For example, my previous 33s measured 33.1" where typically that size measures closer to 32.6/32.7". These 35s measure 34.7" which is on par for most of the 35s out there. But when considering rubbing, wheel spec is another huge factor that is often over looked (which is why I tried to be very specific about mine).

@engineeringoverland 3 жыл бұрын
It honestly drives perfectly fine. I wouldn’t say it really drives much different than stock. It’s obviously still a lifted vehicle with bigger tires so can’t expect it to drive like a car, but it cruises no problem. If I disconnect the sway bar though, then it’s a boat lol.

How's your caster angle in the front? Did you adjust the upper control arm at all when you did the stretch to the lowers? Did you have to do anything to keep your pass side spring from contacting your sway bar ends?
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 3 жыл бұрын
Caster is perfect. I adjusted the upper and lowers when doing the stretch. I set the caster back when I did the lift, so adjusting everything equally doesn't change caster. To correct the angle of the spring, I made a spacer that sits under the lower isolator and angles the spring back. This helped tremendously. But through the travel, with the sway bar still connected, I have noticed the end link can still make slight contact on the spring. Not enough to really affect anything. Could add more spacer, but don't want to lift the isolator off the perch too much. I disconnect for anything serious, so its not enough of an issue to worry about. May end up trying another idea to make this better in the future if necessary.
@markcarpenter3600
@markcarpenter3600 3 жыл бұрын
Unless you have a custom axle made or do a cut and turn the OEM axle, caster angle or pinion angle will be wrong. Some guys try to split the difference, but around 3 inches of lift it starts to become problematic. You can try to get around this by installing a double double cardan front driveline, but this adds considerable weight to the driveline which can lead to vibration from the driveline itself. If it is a trail rig you can sacrifice drive ability with less caster, but overland rig needs to have very good road manners.
@engineeringoverland
@engineeringoverland 3 жыл бұрын
I agree and disagree. The vehicles are obviously built with a nominal caster and pinion angle within their tolerance. When you lift it, its impossible to ever be at those exact numbers again. Not meeting factory spec doesn't necessarily make your setup wrong. But pinion angle always comes before caster, which is why you will see the recommended caster values changing based on lift height. You just simply adjust accordingly. If you were to set this up without any reference values, you'd want to get the best pinion angle that doesn't cause binding, where your caster can still be within a safe, useable tolerance. As long as you adjust everything correctly, this does not become problematic over 3" (or even 8"). This is one of the big reasons for long arms... long arms help to reduce harsh driveshaft angles. A high pinion axle also corrects this same thing.
