When you compare the Genesis era Woe, is Me to literally any of Issues’ material, it just couldn’t be clearer which group had the best songwriting chops and the better musicians. In my opinion, Issues really had something special, musically speaking. Between Tyler’s very unique and killer voice, Michael’s solid screaming capability and the musicianship and musical vision of Rebollo and the Acord brothers, Issues wrote one banger after another. It’s a damn shame that it all came crumbling down because that combination of guys really could’ve gone far. I still regularly listen to all of their stuff. They had a sound that was entirely unique to them and it was impossible to hear an Issues song and not know immediately whose song it was. It wasn’t just because of Tyler’s voice, either. AJ’s characteristic guitar riffs and the precision of his playing was a key factor in their overall sound.

23:55 THANK YOU! You just summarized my feelings on most of 2010s deathcore. Also I never realized that Genesi[s] had no fully repeated parts (again, save for some hooks like "talk your shit, I'll give you a reason to"). I guess the otherwise stale and repetitive nature of the album completely negates the potential benefit of it, unlike on Number[s] where it was way more apparent. American Dream kinda goes the opposite direction, repeating choruses for more singalong factor, while dialing back a bit on the chuggy breakdowns.

Not that anyone wouldn't agree, but I think Austin Thornton's philosophy of running bands (the stereotypical "No Abusing Substances of Any Kind, No Bringing Anyone Over to the Studio" philosophy) feels more like him committing the Sin of Hubris of trying to keep the Woe, Is Me Mems from letting their egos get the best of them and devolving into the worst versions of themselves, only for the idea to collapse in on itself with Tyler Carter, Michael Bahn, and the Ferris brothers leaving to form Issues, Austin himself getting the boot, and the band breaking up, than it is him just being a dick and burning the band to the ground for the Hell of it. That's my Muse Theory, anyway.

Please do Jamie's Elsewhere! They Said a Storm Was Coming was super influential in terms of later metalcore and the bands music had such an uplifiting vibe. I remember being so pissed when Aaron left, but I still enjoyed Rebel Revive. Now with his work in OM&M as well as Jamie's Elsewhere releasing a single with the OG members back, it'd be a great time to talk about them!
@connor30862 жыл бұрын
It would also be super cool to talk about the Rebel Revive cycle of the album, in which (if I remember correctly): the album was crowd funded, on the album release tour they learned that “one of the members decided to take full writer's credit for the latest album without the rest of the band's knowledge, and therefore received and kept 100% of the proceeds. Despite the rest of the band leaving” Justin Kyle finished out the tour still with the other artists on it which I respected a ton. So I thought it was very interesting that they decided to get back together

Loving these videos! Wasn't a huge Woe fan at the time but I faintly remembered all the drama that went on. I personally would love to see a video about In Fear and Faith. That was a band that should've been way bigger than they were. Incredibly talented musicians but just a revolving door of members and unidentified problems definitely plagued them. Not to mention, their last show was them opening for Saosin with Anthony Green. Pretty poetic ending given the name of the band.

Suffering from mental illness I'm able to heavily relate with the positive messages throughout Genesis as well as when experiencing conflict with others. Austin wrote lots of the lyrics for Numbets as well hence the "you're so proud of the one liners you wrote" line which alludes to Tyler Carter's "never lose your flames" in Desolate The Conductor that he was so incredibly proud & fond of so it's not like Austin didn't start writing lyrics until Genesis for the band by any means. Genesis still gets me pumped tf up & is great for exercising.
@WoeIsJesse2 жыл бұрын
In the AP article Austin mentioned he thought the original plan was to replace him and Hance and bring Tyler back, only to end up resulting in the Ferris brothers and Michael then leaving. There must have been some label connection Austin had or some other detail that was never disclosed to have him be such a "root" for the band, wonder what it was that changed between 2011 and 2013. E: Always assumed he was the "electronic/ambient" element in their sound and seemed most likely if that was also his doing in Of Machines' sound

Hance was the absolute MVP of the latter era Woe Is Me. Also, the American Dream EP was dope; Stand Up is a banger and the title track with the Danny Leal feature also rips. Over the years Woe, is Me loses more and more things that made them unique in their genre. Not just Tyler. They lost their ambient lead guitarist first. After Tyler they lost Michael, then they lost their keyboardist. All those things for me made Woe, Is Me. I think if the Ferris brothers never left, they would have still made it. I loved genesis. Especially when they had Caleb Shomo on a track

Yeah, i’ll be honest, I remember it taking a few listens to get into, but once it caught me, I couldn’t stop listening to it and I still love to sling it on to this day. Such a heavy ride from start to finish and a nice 30 minutes easy listen, super catchy parts, love it

“I want to create music until the day that I die. I just want to be involved in a musical project that makes me completely 100% happy.” Has any musician in human history ever been “involved in a musical project that made them completely 100% happy”? Musicians don’t tend to be the happiest of people. Even after a few years of living his dream, Hance still didn’t realize that being completely 100% happy as a touring musician is not possible.

Huge fan of this channel and pretty much agree with everything you said about "Genesi[s]" in an analytical / comparison sense to "Number[s].... but I also think this album is an absolute banger. So when in the mood for something like this (and something delivered in such a straight up way) this album hits the spot and then some and is just SO much fun because of that. It's so ridiculous in its atmosphere of the da brutes, da riffage and da disses that you kind of have to suspend reality and just go with it. If you don't take it too seriously and embrace this, it's actually a great time and one of the best "air" guitar / "air" performance albums too haha - go on, try it!
