Great point about the lack of choruses! I think a lot of these bands were progressive and arty by accident- because they were kids who had no idea how to write songs, so they just strung together a bunch of parts that had nothing to do with each other.

Bro you finally did it! I lived through this whole era of Woe, Is Me I was a super fan of this band up until Tyler, Ben & Cory left. I just felt like it wasn't the same when Vengeance came out but I did enjoy the song though. I only saw WIM live once and that was the summer of 2010 and Number[s] wasn't even out yet and it was the original lineup as well. some fun facts: in the opening track of Numbers[s] the song On Veiled Men has a line that says "for these hands like houses we'll protect you from this storm" which is a shoutout to the band Hands like Houses. Emarosa, Woe, Is Me & Hands Like Houses were all recording music at Chango Studios at the same time which is how Jonny Craig had vocal features on the songs Desolate, The Conductor & Our Number[s] by Woe, Is Me. Tyler Carter & Jonny Craig have a vocal feature on the song Lion Skin by Hands Like Houses. The three albums that were being recording simultaneously were the following: Emarosa - self titled (2010) Woe, Is Me - Number[s] (2010) Hands Like Houses - Ground Dweller (2012) EDIT: The reason why bands like Of Mice & Men and Woe, Is Me were able to get signed so quickly was due to both bands having members that were previously in bands that were signed to a record label. So pretty much they're already on a contract agreement with Rise so they have to fulfill the rest of the contract or possibly face legal consequences. That's why we saw so many ex-members of bands start a new project when they left whatever band they were in during the 2010s.

I'm glad you mentioned the absence of choruses on Number[s], first time I see someone else talk about it. The only repeating part I can think of is the "you're too far out, to swim your way in" on Hell or High Water. Tim Sherrill's lead guitar work is also impressive, it sucks that there is very little clear footage of him playing the tapping parts, as far as I know, none of his successors ever played them live. You can also clearly tell that the guitar parts got a lot simpler when Andrew joined. Ben's low screams deserve a mention too, they really added to their set back in the day. In fact I'm pretty sure his keyboard was just a stage prop, all he'd really do live was backup screaming.
@ReanuKeaves12 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by tapping parts? Also, yeah they lost two key players in the band early on with those two. Very underrated but important to the original, industrial sound of what was Woe, Is Me. The album definitely feels like one long song. In a way, kind of like a fluid conceptual album without one single theme.
@FairyCRat2 жыл бұрын
@@ReanuKeaves1 Tim has some pretty intricate lead guitar parts on the album (not quite DGD level, but still, they're pretty cool), and some of them are tapped, like on 2 parts of Delinquents. In case you don't know, tapping is a guitar technique where the guitarist has both hands on the fingerboard and thus doesn't strum the strings. And yeah, I do feel like it could've been one long song, some of the tracks even segue into each other. They're also all in the same key, except for the last one.

I met Tyler in 2019 and we talked about why Number[s] had no choruses. He said that a certain member of the band (from Of Machines) hated choruses and said great music does not need a chorus. Also Tyler has a Number[s] tattoo behind his right ear.
@joshscott65142 жыл бұрын
Michael has the same tattoo. They might all have it actually. I used to think it was weird that the bands drummer was always front and center in their photoshoots, then the splits happened and it made sense. Lol
@joshscott65142 жыл бұрын
@@saviorofs0ng I'm sure you'll understand more if you watch all 3 videos Cozy puts out. Basically their drummer Austin (from Of Machines) was very..."involved" with the direction of the band and their music, so much so that almost the entire band quit and started a new band, which he then wrote an entire album about before then getting kicked out of Woe is Me by his new bandmates for being so controlling. Most bands have the vocalist[s] in the front of their photoshoots because they're the "face" of the band, hence "frontman". Austin being in front of everyone else basically implies that he's the face of the band, which isn't usually the case for a drummer.

Oh man, your channel reminds me how ridiculous this era was. So many bands back then would splinter into handfuls of other bands that putter out quietly. Of machines was being seen as the next big band up and coming for a minute there. It was them, inaviate, and the color morale. Then of machines and inaviate dissolved and the color morale had a sophomore slump. Anyways, of machines became woe is me, became issues and the bro version of woe is me. Tyler Carter did solo stuff, then issues. Woe is me died and favorite weapon and cursed sails were a thing for a short time. Issues kicked Mike and wild heart happened. Can't forget scouts solo stuff too. Seriously... What was this era of music? I mean, you said oceana which reminded me of their split and them becoming polyenzo, while the screamer formed decoder with the first versa emerge vocalist before they rebranded as lead hands and got sued into oblivion. Speaking of, that first versa singer would be an interesting video. Versa emerge, decoder, and makari all had him for a short time and it seemed to be drama. Haha

I loved both Numbers and Genesi(s), despite sounding very different. As for American Dream, I thought that was poor.

I saw WIM at their only italian show ever, touring with A Skylit Drive in October 2011. Their album Number[s] is still a favorite of mine to this day. Great video, can't wait for part 2. Keep it up!

Growing up I was a huge We Came As Romans fan and my first concert ever was Rock Yourself to Sleep Tour. Crazy to think how long ago that was and everything that’s happened since!

Cheyene Stokes was like the cult favorite hardcore band in my neck of metro Atlanta. I remember learning they had a connection to Woe, Is Me and was floored.

Thank you for doing this! I love that you use relive the moment vid footage because they were always at the same shows I was at back in the day and when it pops up in your videos im like the Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme and saying "I was at that show!" Good times

Jesus Christ. I played a show with Cheyne Stokes. They had a designated light-guy that they treated like a member of the band. He would manually operate their stage lights (which amounted to half a dozen home depot flood lights) on stage with the rest of the band. He had a wooden board with power strips secured to it that ran to different lights and he would switch them on and off through out the set. The board was attached to a guitar strap like a keytar. He would crab-stance and jog in place with the rest of the band. Absolute goofiest shit I'd ever seen. I asked them what's up with that guy and I think they said something like he was trying to trying to learn or was saving up for a synthesizer.

The real ones not only saw Woe, Is Me in concert but Issues and Cursed Sails. Bonus if you were like me and met Austin at The White Rabbit in his next band at a local show. He then got kicked out before they even played a show

yooo i was wondering when you'd cover this! i was never really a fan of either band but i saw woe, is me in supporting PTV in 2013 and it was during their big lineup change/split - i remember there were members in the tour poster who where no longer in the band when i saw them xD
