Ricky Gervais's new Netflix special provoked a huge backlash online, with wild accusations of transphobia coming from the Twitterati, leftwing press and other comedians such as Nish Kumar and James Acaster - even Robin Ince, who got his break from Ricky. Robin is a straight white male comedian who developed his career in the 90s when he would've actually benefited from the patriarchy and systemic racism that he now rails against. I started comedy in 2009, I missed that boat.
I think Robin should stand aside and make space.
I look at the pearl-clutching responses of Vox, Esquire and reveal how a comedy industry "insider" who condemned Ricky was actively nasty to a new act. I also explain why Ricky's material isn't hateful or transphobic and the power of comedy to expose fallacies in weak ideology.
