Timestamps are integrated into the video now showing each segment dedicated to this device.
I was aiming for about 40 minutes but I ran a bit overtime, so that's why there's timestamps so you can skip to wherever you need to be. No harm in doing so! If you are here to see the teardown, you can skip to that. If you are here just for the specs, you can skip to that - there's no problems in doing so. I thank you for even clicking on this video!

Greetings and welcome to another In-Depth Cheapo Review of...a LAPTOP! FINALLY!
It's been a while since I've covered cheapo Laptops on the channel and SO many people have asked for me to do a review on one and...almost 3 years later. Here we are!
I also figured let's try emulation on this because Android 4.1 is so limited nowadays and I had to show the performance of this somehow. I'm happy to do more emulation in videos on older devices just for the fun of it.
Well, you sat through me looking at a cheapo Tablet, now get ready for likely one of the most cheapest laptops to be manufactured. This certainly will be a fun one so get yourself comfy and enjoy the ride!

THE BOOTSCREEN. Haven’t seen that in at least 10 years. Here in the US we had these Craig laptops that ran Android. They sold them until late 2015 and they were sold at drugstores. My family always bought them in the early 2010s. I remember a Craig laptop from 2012 that ran Ice Cream Sandwich. It had a bootscreen of the Ice Cream Sandwich logo as a blue outline, then it “colors in” from the bottom, and the image ripples. Then they got an Android Jellybean laptop. Had the same vents on the bottom and same casing like the one in the video although it was in black. It also has the same bootscreen as the one in this video. I’m sure they both (the jellybean one I had in 2013 and the one in the video) have the same board inside. None of the Craig ones had a Windows key. Instead, it was replaced with “Zzz” printed in washed-out dark orange or blue instead. And I remember Christmas of 2015. That was the last time I ever got and saw a Craig laptop - it ran KitKat. I don’t even remember the bootscreen on it. Was probably the Craig logo or the Android kitkat icon maybe? I had it for quite a short time and I have quite vague memories of it although my memory is very good. Too good even. Although they broke a lot, Craig’s cheap Android laptops were a part of my childhood and I’m quite fond of them. Thanks for the nostalgia! 💚

I bought a 'laptop' similar to that sometime around 2010 Single core CPU, 256MB RAM, a teeny-tiny amount of storage and the same ports. It ran Windows CE I think I paid £25 for it, new, from Amazon. WinCE wasn't so bad, but with help from the Internet, and the reason I bought it, I got a flavour of Linux running. More as an exercise than anything else. I was stuck at home. It was cheap and I was bored... I ran an SNMP daemon on it. I was bored. Even at £25, I was underwhelmed.

these android devices slow down so badly because of you signing into a google account, causing the play store to update the apps, thus causing google play services to update and obliterate the performance by filling up the ram and cpu. my suggestion is to save google stuff for later or not add a google account at all. when i used to have bad android 4 phones, i always had to fight with google play services by removing updates, clearing data and disabling it entirely just to have the phone "usable".

Back in 2013 I needed small pc for basic work and I was THIS close buy android tablet like that.... but I saved few bucks, and spend 300 on 10 inch netbook Asus EeePC with Intel atom/win7(with custom cpu drivers that boost graphic) and I was able to run quake 4 in 20-25fps and it was amazing for those 2 years I used it, and with dual boot I was able to use opera on linux for 14 hours straight, it was mind blowing back then.... Now I just imagine my "mind blow" if I would buy Android "laptop" instead of that Asus EeePC... Police would need to scrap that mind from the wall after I blow it after first hour of usage...

The reason the battery meter is jumping around is because it uses a voltage reference to calculate the state of charge Increasing the CPU load or screen brightness puts a heavier load on the battery, which pulls the voltage down, which causes the percentage to go down, then when the load on the battery is reduced, the voltage goes back up, and the percentage goes up with it The battery percentage on new devices is calculated using energy as a reference, it counts the mah in vs the mah out and uses a known capacity as a reference to calculate the percentage The issue with the second one is that you can get into a situation where you might have a worn out battery, and even though it says 30% left, if you do something power intensive, it could simply just die because the battery voltage was pulled down below the safety cutoff threshold

I had one of those things back in the Day. It was a Meteorit NB-7. There was a male to male USB A Cable to flash Roms and Stuff. An believe me, you’d had to do this at least twice a week. Mine had Android 2.2 on it and it was a mess. Mostly because many Apps didn’t supported Landscape back then. Also it factory resetted itself once a week. Needed a Laptop for school and my parents bought this. Got a beaten up Win 98 Laptop from my Uncle, it served me better. Edit: At least the released an Update, that applied an Overclock from 800mhz to 1Ghz. Also there are TV Commercials, but only in German. On dumping the system files: Because the Android version is so old, you might be able to root it easily with app based root methods, then you should be able to use wireless ADB to dump the system files or simply plug in a USB flash drive and use a file explorer to dump the files to that. If you're lucky, the ROM is already rooted and you can simply run "adb root" from a PC connected with wireless ADB.
@PongWithBreakout

@PongWithBreakout
@PongWithBreakout Жыл бұрын
@@Jdbye The other option is to flash some root scripts, or flash custom firmware. This method was model depended and not always available. It is now replaced with Magisk anyway. And yes, KingoRoot is app based, that's what I said. But the point was that it was only possible on Mediatek SoC, which I was actually wrong about, oops. So yeah, maybe it's worth trying to root this tablet with an app. Also KingRoot and KingoRoot are different apps, haha, the more you know.

It was a fun project but unfortunately I could never get the vm environment's touchscreen to calibrate to my 4k touchscreen display so I would have to use a mouse to interact with it (like you did here) Overall the novelty of having android OS (at least in a VM setting) running on a laptop was fun but the functionality (for a CS Student) makes it impractical as a primary device.

I have a small samsung ZTE smartphone and it's cheap and slow but it's just good enough to stream music from internet radio to my stereo. The problem is I have to sideload music apps and the number of them is getting slimmer.

About the file dumping: it probably has a USB OTG port, like TV Boxes, maybe you can use it to connect to a PC and dump files? Edit: forgot to explain that the USB OTG cable is actually a USB-A to USB-A cable, you can make one from spare USB cables

the balance of the laptop is so that the vent on the bottom gets air. its a feature not a bug! (its totally not bad quality at all) this thing would have been e-waste in ~2010, years before it was made. I'm watching this on a thinkpad from 2012, a way more expensive laptop when it was made but at least I can still use it for my daily stuff 10 years later

The laptop I am watching this video on and am typing this comment on plus edit, mix and master my band's music on is a 2013 Windows 8.1 ASUS laptop I bought for $417 from The Good Guys as an old display model. Lasts longer than dozens of Apple Macs/macbooks these days - but those are crap by design.

Have an Android 5 version, same specs, can handle Half-Life 1 via XasH engine. Also, I would recommend root and enabled swapping to overcome low ram issues to some extent. Link2SD solves small internal memory. And for PSX, I would use FPSXe, as it is one of the more effective emulator on older devices. :)

I bought one of these back on 2009 for my wife. I think it was in ebay and I had to wait about 3 weeks for it. It was running Windows CE and was mostly useless. The reason I got it was the fact that it had remote desktop client and could connect to the desktop Windows PC. This made it much more useful but it was still a pain because it was so cheap.

In the states Micro Center was selling something called the evolve 3 laptop. "Retail" was like 80 USD and open box, as they often were, was about 42 USD. It had windows 10 and could actually run it and serve as a crappy little netbook. The feature set was kind of impressive for the price, but we live in a day where any used device for $50 is more than good enough for most tasks.

@SMOOREZ My goodness, the 1st ever laptop I ever got. Mine was the WM8880 variant, running android 4.4.2 Kitkat, but these pieces of garbage were ABSOLUTELY UNUSABLE ON ANDROID!! Windows CE was better, especially on the WM8850 due to it having more ram and a good cpu clock for it, but the problem is that most of the stuff was obsolete. I can giva ya the Wndows ce firmware for the WM8850 if you want.

37:16 it's 1024x600 (probably just using actual netbook screens from eeePCs and the like of the era), but android excludes the status bar from its resolution calculation since it's always visible and not considered usable space for apps (except for fullscreen games that is). It's quite dumb but.. 🤷‍♂

I had an earlier version of one of these running Android 4.1 with a green lid back in early 2013 I snagged off eBay for $70 USD in a bidding war after my Acer laptop broke, and I needed something cheap while I saved up for another system to carry to, and from work, it had the speakers on the side of the screen with an 800x600 screen(decent colors is the best I can say about it), and man was it big mistake, as it took nearly 3 minus to boot to a usable state, and if you tried to do more than one thing at a time it was a sluggish mess, even running something like streaming radio would cause it to stutter, and crash, Wifi range was like what's that, and if I got 2 hours of battery that was a good day, Needless to say after 6 months when I finally got another laptop, it ended up going to one of my nephews to play offline music, and videos while they were in the car plugged into the cig port, and for that it was alright for that.

I think my 2012 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 ran Jellybean Android 4.1 at one point. It runs Android 4.2 now. I tried using it a few months ago. It is slow as hell and most things don't work on it anymore. I was still using this 2012 tablet in 2019 and it still got updates and I was still able to download new apps on it. I was even still using it for music in 2022. It also reminds me of a Chinese Android gaming tablet that my father bought me in 2014. It had physical controls on the system itself and it was designed to be used for emulation gaming. I wanted to make a video of this gaming tablet but it got to a point where the startup screen runs in an infinite loop and it never boots into the OS.

Just fairly recently bought a slightly used 14" HP Laptop for $50 US dollars which only seen about a month of use until I bought it. The factory specs is a Ryzen 3 3300U with Vega 6 GPU , 4GB DDR4 , 1TB 5400rpm HDD, Windows 10 Home The laptop in question was released back in later half of 2020 and brand new costs little over $300 US dollars. Reason I got it for dirt cheap is the previous owner disliked how darn slow it was running. Reason for that was it only had 4GB of RAM installed from the factory what was HP thinking.. Just sitting at the desktop the OS was using around 3.7 GB out of the 4GB it had installed from the factory. I ended up spending $25 dollars on a 32GB DDR4 kit and installed that in the laptop. At that point while inside the laptop I replaced the 1TB HDD with a SSD I all ready had laying around. Now the laptop boots up in 12 seconds and quick at launching software now. In the end I got a nice 14" laptop with a total investment of $75 US dollars. The laptop even supports Windows 11 which it's currently running no problem at all.
How bad is the Cheapest Laptop
