Great review and explanation of this tool. One thing, I’d suggest that you turn out the small blank first and then each subsequent blank. That way you don’t need to worry about the recess in the front of the mother blank, nor the re-setting up of the jig.
@LriceVT4 жыл бұрын
If you cut the small one first, you don't have a way to re-mount the original blank as the recess will only be on the first blank. I have used this cutter for years and it is worth the $$
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Doug, there are several ways you can use, yours being one. I prefer this approach as you have a mounting point for each subsequent bowl, to form a tenon.
@wakelywanderer124 жыл бұрын
Very good tutorial. I would add make sure to use a large tenon for the large blade. I have snapped a 2” tenon off with a catch, which sometimes happens as you enter end grain. As you said, easy does it.
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wakely for watching and the tip.
@mikemitchell89152 жыл бұрын
Could I ask you if it would be possible to cut out the smallest bowl first and then move on to a larger coring bar size, while keeping the original chucking point all the while? I suppose that it might be a bit harder to judge the sizing set up of the small core at the starting set up in order to maintain enough wood for the larger coring set up. Thanks in advance for your answer,
@MikeWaldt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike ... it is possible, I just prefer this method. Thanks for your question.
@tomcoker98823 жыл бұрын
Mike, did you mount the 1st blank you cored out, put a tenon on it and then core out the next blank with the same small blade? I sort of expected you to core out a small blank, change cutters (to the larger one) and cut out the next blank. Please go over that process please. Thanks. Cheers, Tom

Hello Mike, Thanks for this. Well presented, produced and explained. It appears a great piece of kit if you're mass producing bowls and good for the environment as waste is significantly reduced. Keep up the good work....I look forward to your videos. I have not collected stickers before but I would really love a sticker of yours. It would have pride of place on my lathe....:-) :-)

Nice one Mike, it's been interesting to see this in action at last. I've looked at this several times but have been put off by the cost and, I suspect, my lathe is not large enough really. Nonetheless, it was cool to see it in use. Cheers!

Interesting, looks like they have changed the design slightly. My one, which is a triple blade unit, has holes in the main black plate, whereas your one is solid. Just checked their website, yep, different design. May I suggest you carefully check the 3mm (?) grub screw that holds the handle on very regularly. It does have a tendency to become loose with hard dry wood, trust me, when it drops out, you cannot find it. You didn't mention the noise, they are quite noisy; at least mine is. You will love it when doing green wood, steam comes out and the blade goes through like a hot knife in butter. I think you may have made a slight error when demonstrating the cardboard templates. When the cardboard template is at the bottom outside of the blank (nearest to the chuck), this is giving you (depending on the blade size) either 25mm, 20mm or 15mm depth of bowl thickness. I myself, made that exact same mistake the first time I used my bowl saver. As you mentioned, they do have various tool post sizes, 25mm, 25.4mm, but also, 30mm for Vicmark lathes. They will also make any size tool post you desire. Failing that, you can get anyone with a bit of metal lathe knowledge, to whip up whatever tool post size you require. If ever you get to NZ, I suggest you visit their factory, they are in Hawkes Bay NZ, which is about 2 minutes from Napier, the Art Deco capital of NZ. I was lucky enough to pick mine up personally as NZ is only 3 hours away from Australia.

I was told that you can't replace the cutting tooth without some magic welding, too bad they don't modify the cutting arm to use re-moveable cutters as all cutters will dull and this one is a pain to replace for those of us who do not have the welding/brazing/whatever tools!

As has been said a saw doctor will braise a new cutte for you, but they last a good long time as you only need to raise the burr each time with a diamond honing card or similar.
