If you are hollowing out a large bowl, it is such a shame that all of the material being removed ends up on the workshop floor as shavings. The Woodcut Bowlsaver is attached to the lathe via the lathe tool post and is also supported by a Morse taper that fits into the tailstock of the lathe (MT2). The Bowlsaver uses 2 curved blades to give a combination of cuts that will remove blanks from 75mm (3") up to 300mm (12") from the inside of the outer bowl. The depth that the blades will go into the wood can be adjusted from zero up to 130mm (5"). This, in essence, will remove a bowl 300mm (12") x 130mm (5") from the outer bowl.
Ideal for all skill levels, it works very well on either seasoned or unseasoned timber. If turned unseasoned, the resulting bowl blanks can be put aside for seasoning and finishing at a later date. We would recommend a minimum power requirement of 1hp for using this system. N.B. You will need to choose the correct diameter tool post to suit your lathe from those listed.

Think you are using the templates incorrectly. The arrow should touch the bottom of bowl and the centre of the bolt. Bowl base thickness is built into the system. Easier the guessing. I have made hundreds of bowls, using the same system on a 1hp axminster lathe it's fantastic. No failures yet!

I have a 2hp laguna and the bowlsaver just like this, on the larger blade I keep getting caught up somehow and it stops my lathe several times. I'm pretty sure it's all set up right, not sure what I'm doing wrong yet

In your opinion. Which is a better option. An internal chuck or an external chuck. Trying to work out what would be a better purchase yano.

Hi fletch lives, the following reply is from Colwin - "This depends on the project, however, if you're looking for strength then recess can be made stronger but if you're looking for flexibility then a foot is better. Different projects will change the answer so you will need to get used to using both methods. Hope that helps."

Excellent demo and explanation Colwyn - I just have one query. At about 12.43 into the video you say that the template will indicate the back of the CUT. Is this correct as on my template it states that it will indicate the 'BASE OF BOWL'?

Why don’t you cut the inner bowl first and progress to the bigger ones leaving the wood on the chuck instead of having to re mount the whole thing for every size?

Hi there, Colwin says you need to turn a foot on each piece prior to remounting and turning. Hope this helps.

Hi colwyn, can you check the template position? I use it to the bottom of the blank… as I’ve tried it your way and it seems to cut an uneven bowl. The main blank has a larger base and the second bowl is smaller than needs to be. Can you let me know as I’m a little confused as to which is the correct method.

The template is used differently in your various instructional videos. Does it line up with the bottom of the blank or where you want the bottom of the cut to be?
