You forgot to mention how 2005, a lion, zebra, hippo, giraffe, and 4 penguins escaped from the central park zoo and were released, but then lost at sea. They were later found stranded on Madagascar

Absolutely loved this video, it's always wonderful to see the history and improvement of zoos, as a frequent (accredited) zoo visitor and advocate myself. If I may, I'm going to mention Spain's first zoo; starting in 1774, the "Casa de las fieras" (house of beasts) royal menagerie was built in El Jardín del Buen Retiro park in Madrid. It opened to the public at the end of the XVIII century. However, in 1972 the newly built Madrid Zoo (currently Madrid Zoo-Aquarium) was opened, and all the animals from the old menagerie were moved out, and it remains empty, but visitable, to this day. However, in a form of tribute, a bird of prey cage was moved to the new zoo, and is still currently in use, housing a breeding pair of Spanish imperial eagles, an endangered endemic species.

Zoos have existed for a long time in history, so it makes sense that Egypt would have had a zoo even back then. I'm sure there is much more history that has been lost.

A favorite aquarium of mine has to be the New England Aquarium in Boston. Huge building with some spectacular tanks and displays. Its also the first place where I ever saw live penguins in person. It even has an accompanying theatre building nearby that features Imax documentaries.

You forgot the most old zoo in Italy....Rome's Zoological Garden. The constructions begans in 1909 and Carl Hagenbeck was the first man that inveted habitat with the moats.. The animals arrived the 2nd November 1911 at Roma Termini Station and then was transported to the zoo. After many years the zoo begans to get bigger and bigger. There's such an enormous variety of animals like: hippopotamous, african elephants, polar bears, lions, tigers,etc. The most beautiful architectures was built by Raffele De Vico like the Birds Aviary that it's still there or Elephants House that was rebuilt. Unfortunately during WW2 the new habitats was stopped cause the beggining of the war. Years later the parc continue to impress the pubblic. Some of the animals that were in the park today are dead or transported to other park. The last one polar bear died in the 90's and the enclosure was the new habitats of the Californian seals. The lasts african elephants was transported to an other zoo such like the gorillas and the last Indian Rhinocerhos. Today the park is still the same with the archituctures that was built by Raffaele De Vico like the Birds Aviary and the moats inveted by Carl Hagenbeck. I recomended for the tourists that are interested to visit something that is not only the Colosseum or other Roman Empire artifacts.

While a lot of thing about zoos in the past are very unfortunate and uncomfertable now adays (catching animals from the wild, keeping them in litteral cages, lack of welfare consideration at all) it is intersting to see there were some that were used for actual conservation and education well before it became the norm Really irks how some people act like animals in accredited zoos nowadays are being kept like they were in the 1800s despite entire species still existing/being brought back from the brink soley from the work of said zoos and aquariums

I went to the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris earlier this year for research, the first time I ever been to a zoo outside my home country. Seeing this vintage location, albeit up to modern standards felt like a time capsule, on top of seeing some animals I've never seen live, such as mongooses, the King Vulture, the Cassowary, the Rocky Mountain Goat, on top of seeing Nénette in person, the oldest living orangutan in captivity. Sadly I didn't get to see the Tasmanian Devils, either due to time constraints or their enclosure was under maintenance. A truly unforgettable experience.

Are used to go to the Philadelphia zoo a lot I haven’t been there in quite a while. I also been to the Cape May zoo couple of times it has some large but small wildlife but it’s a smaller zoo comparison to the Philadelphia zoo. When I went to great adventure, they had one of those safari tours that you can drive to see the animals. Obviously the lions were in their cages, of course but the herbivores such as zebras, antelope and etc. you can see them roaming around I remember baboons through bananas at the car wash was very unusual, and they were on top of the car

There's also some possible evidence that a single Dodo bird made it to London zoo for a short time; the same specimen arguably the Oxford Dodo head and foot.

Great video, but I think you missed "Hagenbecks Tierpark" in Hamburg, one of the first Zoos with a focus on landscape architecture (visitors should see as little fences as possible, animals were separated by water or artificial boulders) and the wellfare of the animals 😊

Weird how were the only animal that collects other animals?
@snakewithapen548911 күн бұрын
It's not exactly the same as 'collecting', but some species of ants use domesticated aphids to produce food for them! Also, owls are known to keep 'pet' ribbon snakes in their nests to eat nest parasites, and tarantulas keep frogs to do the same thing to protect their eggs.

Man amazing video and so informative!! I always try and look up history of zoos and the relationship people share with animals I think it’s really interesting, where do you recommend someone can learn more about that? Also do you have an Instagram or any other social media?
@AncientRealms199911 күн бұрын
Thank you, I think by checking out your local zoos would be a good place to start to find out the history of them, also there's a few books out such as the Tower Menagerie by Daniel Hahn which goes into detail about the Tower of London. Also my Instagram and X are both ancientrealms1999 or ancientrealms99
