lmao, when i mentioned on your livestream that i got a garbage carnivorous plant, it was this exact product. i got the only box with any signs of green, not knowing if that was a good or bad thing. both plants are doing great. i followed your viral video's advice ("if you can grow a tomato..."), pinched off the trap's flowers, and made sure they're kept plenty wet. my tap water seems fine for them. only problem i had was some of my pitchers getting cooked on the hot porch, so i had to move 'em to a less intense spot. 6 weeks on they're still pretty smal, but i cherish that i'm actually successfully growing carnivorous plants for once.

My dad got me one of these kits 2 years ago, and I've come to realize I must have been incredibly lucky with it. My kit came with 6-7 rhizomes, (the 7th might have just been a clump of dirt, it was tiny) non of them had any growth, all appeared dead. I planted them anyway and about a month later they began sprouting. I got 5 venus flytraps and 1 pitcher out of that kit. All 5 flytraps are still doing great, but unfortunately the pitcher didn't survive winter dormancy, but it was doing great up until then.

I had a customer so excited they started doing theirs in their car, found nothing, came back to me to exchange it(i was skeptical), so we went through all 15 that we had. NOTHING in a single one. Management refused to take them off the shelf too. I took them off the shelf and put a sign for a manager and it went right back both times with a new piece of tape... i refused to sell them unless the customer was being rude lol Since then(close to a year) ive only seen one with some greenery

I got a vtf from this brand (from Lowe’s I’m pretty sure) I had it in the “terrarium” for about a month and a half and it didn’t grow very much, the traps looked close to dying too. I ended up building a mini bog for it (and a sarracenia not sure which variety though) and they’re both so happy outside! I just got a sundew and a bog violet to accompany them. I do keep a couple jugs of distilled water in case we go awhile without rain but besides that they’re fairly low maintenance plants.

VFT are tough little things. I bought one on Halloween on sale, it had a single trap still alive, the dead and the peat moss were molding, brought it home, clipped off the rotting leaf, it's rhizome seemed a little worse for wear, and was potentially starting to go. But, two months later, after being rinsed off in some rain water and placed outside to go straight into dormancy with my others, it's single trap has long since died off but it has new growth! It's not doing much because, yeah, it's dormant right now, but it's there. I'll be checking it's rhizome in about a month or two again when I repot everyone ( I have many babies to separate )

Quick horticulture question! So, I purchased a rather healthy Graptosedum and a Bunny Ear cactus recently, and I've been following a "soak and dry" method for watering both. The cactus is doing great! However, the Graptosedum is not doing well. Since the leaves were turning black and the peat/perlite mixture that the plant came in is much more moist than it needs to be, I cleaned up the roots and have them drying out while I figure out if it'sgot root rot or not. I also got a couple of healthy leaves off to propagate, if there's no saving the plant itself... I've been waiting to water it until the soil is mostly dry, but it's been raining a lot lately and I have my plants under an awning outside (so they get sunlight but don't get sunburnt). That nice long paragraph aside, what did I do wrong? Also, I have no other potting soil or anything to replant my Graptosedum in. Any advice would be very helpful, as I'm still new to caring for succulents. Thank you for being an inspiration to become a plant parent! 😁
@hamsterama3 жыл бұрын
I have a couple graptosedum plants that I bought during one of those $2 succulent sales at Aldi. A year after I purchased them, I repotted them into a clay pot, using Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm, and Citrus soil I bought at Home Depot. They've been doing great for a few years now. I basically do as you do. For all my cacti and succulents, I keep them under a covered patio, so that they get shade during part of the day. They also get watered when the soil is nearly dry. Typically, I put them out in the rain about once a week. Anyway, sounds like you're doing everything right. But the fact is, sometimes plants die, even if you do everything right. Maybe your plant got fungus or bacteria in the soil, who knows. I lost a few succulents over the years. Recently, I nearly lost a cactus. It lost all its roots. I smelled the soil, and there was a mushroom smell. So, clearly, it was a fungus. Once I repotted the cactus into fresh Miracle-Gro soil and watered it, it started re-growing roots. No other plants were affected. So, long story short, stuff happens. It might not be something you did, it could just be a pathogen floating in the air that got into the soil. My suggestion is, buy another graptosedum, and see if you have better luck this time around!
@alexandriadiangelo60373 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama Thank you so much! 😁
@hamsterama3 жыл бұрын
@@alexandriadiangelo6037 You're welcome! And don't get discouraged! I currently have altogether about 50 or so cacti and succulents. I've been collecting them over the past six or so years. While most of the succulents and cacti I've bought are doing great, I've also lost a bunch over the years. It happens. If you can get those leaves to propagate, super! If not, just buy a new plant. Oh, and one more thing. Make sure you only use potting soil and fertilizer specifically for succulents. You can get both in any hardware store that has a gardening section, as well as any plant nursery. Regular potting soil holds too much water, and regular houseplant fertilizer is too high in nitrogen for desert plants. Okay, that's my advice. I wish you much luck with your new hobby!
@puppybunnysquid33582 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama I'm really sorry for bringing you back into this comment section. I have a few cacti of my own. I had gotten mine at home depot, and they're doing well, but I can't get all the dead soil out of their root system, so I just have the same soil that came in the too small pot in the larger pot that fits (not for much longer) them. I've been intending on repotting them for a while. What do you suggest I do to get that dead dirt off without breaking any of the root system it has?
@hamsterama2 жыл бұрын
@@puppybunnysquid3358 I wouldn't worry about removing the old dirt. I never remove the old dirt when re-potting. I pop the cactus plus dirt out of the old pot, and move everything into a bigger pot. In the new pot, just add new soil underneath and on the sides. Basically, I do the same thing you did. And doing this has never been a problem for me. The cactus' roots will eventually spread to the new soil. I'm not a fan of removing the old soil with no justification, because it could break up roots and cause a fungal infection. I imagine the only reason to remove old soil would be if it the cactus was grown in regular potting soil, instead of cactus and succulent soil. However, I'm pretty sure all the cacti at Home Depot are grown in succulent and cactus soil.
