There was the great line from the comics that perfectly summed up the joker for me. Joker asked a random guy on the street to watch his car when the guy begged Joker not to kill him the Joker replied, "why would I kill you? Contrary to what most people think I don't kill people for no reason, I only kill them because it's funny. And what would possibly be funny about killing you?"

A line I will always remember about the joker in a old batman comic was when a arkham asylum doctor said the joker will kill a man for not liking the color of the man's shoes. Yet the joker will simply kill a man for liking those very same shoes.

What's even more ironic is that one time when the Joker decided to have some fun in Central City (Flash's resident city) and unleashed some Joker gas on the city, and the very second he activated it the Flash showed up blowing the gas out of the cities atmosphere without affecting a single person. Literally before the Joker could get a good look at the Scarlet Speedster, the Flash sent Joker flying out of the city like Team Rocket from Pokémon. Thus Joker sticks to Gotham

The Flash has fallen victim to both of the Tricksters' (James Jesse and Axel Walker) tricks before, so it's not too crazy to imagine that Joker could have a chance at surprising him. That movie was pretty bad, but somehow Barry dying like that wasn't a deal breaker for me. He got drugged by Scarecrow gas, then immediately restrained by the feet, followed by a circular saw to the head. Not great, but he's had stranger Ls in the past.

A slight side track but within the realm; are you planning on creating a tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? On November 15th will be the first anniversary of his death. I know you already created very insightul video five months ago. He was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's a bit underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation when the motion pictures are brought up. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

One thing I think is worth mentioning is that everything with voice acting has a vocal director. You can have amazing voice actors but a piss poor performance just because you have a terrible vocal director, and it's possible that's what happened here too. A prime example of this though very unrelated is with the game Final Fantasy 14, when it was relaunched as A Realm Reborn, they had several amazing voice actors on cast for the English voices, including well known VAs like Taliesin Jaffe and Sam Riegal...but their performances were very, very dry, at least for the initial release. This is likely because the foreign side of things for the game was extremely rushed, as the japanese development team was already very small and having to crunch a lot, and didn't have that great communication with their foreign teams. Upon further patches, their acting had much more personality fitting of the characters, though they still weren't the best. Come the first expansion, Heavensward, the entire English voice cast from ARR's release had been replaced, but so had the vocal director, and the performances were like night and day.

When you have performances as iconic as Mark Hamill's or Heath Ledger's, all you're going to get for a long time are pale imitations of those iconic performances. There has to be a period of stagnation before the next truly phenomenal portrayal emerges, because people have to learn what NOT to do before that character can be made fresh again.

The key to making a good Joker is to take everything that makes Batman who he is, and flip it upside down. Regarding personality, Joker is Batman's exact polar opposite. Batman has a no-kill rule, Joker kills just because he thinks it's funny. Batman hates being Batman and yearns for the day he's no longer needed to protect Gotham, Joker loves being himself and dreads the day he's no longer taken seriously and is forgotten. Batman values those close to him more than life itself, Joker would throw away literally any meaningful relationship he has just for laughs. Joker doesn't and can't work as his own standalone character. He and Batman are part of a set, inverted mirror images of each other. Derived of similar origins, but are opposite extremes resulting from said origins. You can't just cobble a bunch of different popular interpretations of the Joker together and expect the end result to still work as a character. If you don't know what you're doing you'll just end up diluting the qualities of each and ending up with a worst of all worlds abomination. You can go so far as to make Joker the main character and have it work, but only if you have a similarly working idea of what Batman would be like in that world for him to be the opposite of. He needs to have a solid character basis and not just be a Frankenstein's monster of different Jokers stuck together.

Mark Hamill, Troy Baker (the only VA that’s even fit to be the heir apparent to Mark’s Joker), Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix and Jack Nicholson. These guys are the benchmark Jokers the ones that have set a bar

I've always believed, especially the older I get, everyone in the new generation should get to experience Mark Hamill's Joker voice. Before I start sounding like an old man yelling at clouds, hear me out: It is the baseline for quality that you can compare all future versions to. For some, it's the definitive Joker voice. And honestly, the idea that a generation will rob themselves of hearing Kevin or Mark's portrayal's because they're "Ew, too old", or because someone in my generation called them "overrated", is just too darn sad.

I don't think joker looks good in sideburns. Also, I think the only time joker looks great with fingerless gloves is the one voiced by kevin Michael richardson.

Honestly this movie gets unnecessary hate. And the Joker gets stupid amounts of hate for having different takes. None of you were mad about how inconsistent Mr. Freeze is, nobody gets pissy about The Riddler, if the Penguin is portrayed as a gimmick villain instead of a criminal genius and businessman, nobody bats an eye. There are different versions and portrayals of these characters! There always have been! Why is this such a foreign concept to people? If you don't like it fine, but you can't just dismiss it, like "Oh that's different, so it's bad! That's not Joker!" They didn't destroy his character or change much aside from voice and design

I think one of the most underrated Jokers is the one from "The Batman" Played by Kevin Richardson. He turns the intensity up to 11, has a great vocal range, but the real takeaway is the design. He looks so different from any other Joker and it's not because he's made to look like some wannabe failed soundcloud rapper. He looks genuinely unhinged and unnerving. Put all these things together and you get a very interesting character.

It's funny making the comment about Heath and Mark being the two go to inspirations. Yet, Jack is the only one who stands alone; NEVER imitated, NEVER second to anyone, and NEVER really inspired by anyone else. That is because Jack is JACK. But despite that, he wasn't anything like his other roles. I recently revisited Batman '89, and I found myself mezmerized in a way different than when I was a Jr. High student seeing him for the first time. And again, it was because Jack was not only doing something original, but he built his OWN Joker, much like Heath Ledger, and Mark Hamill did. But unlike the other two, no one can do Jack's laugh, and even though Kevin Pollock can imitate him, he still lacks a quality that is singular to Jack. A darkness that he tapped into the same way that Anthony Hopkins did, by tapping into the shadowside. Heath did this as well, but he dove too deep.

Whether for the Joker or others id be interested on hearing more thoughts be it on specific episode's or characters for the animated, The Batman series. Ive always had a fondness for that joker and the range his voice actor could pull. At the very least to me it feels unique enough that it doesnt come across as just trying to copy/do what Hamil did (some insperation maybe but still very much their own)

Epcar was my favorite video game Joker, at least after the MK v DC crossover. He was a little too goofy in that game, but he refined himself into a more balanced performance, a little funny there, a little imposing and manipulative there. His Injustive 2 and MK 11 banter was some of my favorite dialogue in each game, providing some contraat between the edgy characters and even the upbeat comical characters. The reason I didn't say Mark Hamill was my favorite VG Joker is because his performance didn't originate in the video games, so I disqualified him to give the others a fair chance. Speaking of, it is worth pointing out that Troy Baker did a great job as him, but his role as him beyond Arkham Origins is obscure.

The video game injustice joker has more history than one would realize. Aside from the two games, this joker also stars in Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and Mortal Kombat 11. This is canonized by the Joker commenting about past events that took place in all those games. This Joker takes the concept of the multiverse in stride and doesn't take anything seriously, quipping his way through his enemies and not really caring if he gets murdered as violently as possible. It's a very nihilistic Joker that knows nothing matters and decides to have some fun in the time he has left.

It's the laugh, you'll not really notice it unless you have hyper focused on a laugh of the Joker through the years but if the laugh is off - even a hairs breadth - then the performance sours and the look fails, you'll notice things that are more off about the character in their movement compared to their voice, you'll notice how their voice doesn't match their emotions and it will swing wildly for you even if it doesn't in actually swing. That laugh needs to be spot on for the Joker. And while I cannot give a decent explanation here, every bad Joker has a deeper register laugh than the good Jokers, they may swing between deep and high every so often but they'll start off as deeper. And a crazy person doesn't have a deep resonate voice, depth is mirrored in our minds with a sense of focus and control as when doing a deep voice you need to actively focus on making your voice go deeper and your thoughts will focus more. A crazy person generally will have a midtone voice that will dramatically swing high at points, and if you notice all the Jokers that have worked will either have a constant high voiced laugh or start deeper and swing high very quickly as if turning from a chuckle to full psychotic laugh.
