The difference with Kentucky was that at the beginning of the war, it declared neutrality. Thus, three entities existed: the United States, the Confederate States, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. But yeah, that is a bad map.
@TrueFlameslinger5 жыл бұрын
Technically 2 still. States were seen as being able to say no to a large variety of things back then. The war changed that.
@CarthagoMike5 жыл бұрын
It is true that Kentucky declared neutrality (although this was short-lived and violated by both sides soon after), but the problem is that the time-period this map depicts, including all of the battles marked on it, took place after Kentucky's neutrality was violated and it alligned itself with the Union. Setting that aside, since it took part on two sides (neutrality and union respectively) of the war, it should have had a different colour or at the very least be striped (with a colour-combination of the Union-depicting colour and the Neutrality colour).
@thomasrinschler67835 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that Kentucky declared for the Union in September of 1861, while West Virginia didn't separate from Virginia until 1863. So, if the situation is in early 1861, West Virginia should still be shown as part of Virginia; if the situation is in 1863, then Kentucky should be part of the Union. None of this explains Long Island's apparent neutrality/independence, however!

There were a couple flag questions in a little quiz my class were doing in school. The first was Brazil. Simple. Then the other was this weird red flag with a sort of yellow temple sort of thing that resembled Angkor Wat. I knew it was not the flag of any country. So then I tried to find the flag online but completely failed after over an hour of trauling through Google. When we got the answers to the quiz they said that the flag was of Cambodia. It was not the flag of Cambodia. I really want to know how they found that flag and decided to put it in the quiz since it does not appear at all when you type for Cambodian flag. So long story slightly shorter, I eventually found the flag. What resembled Angkor Wat turned out to be Angkor Wat because it was the flag of the Kampuchean united front for national salvation, one of the participants of the Cambodian civil war in the 1970s. Why???

1:46 I guess the creator of this map thought the entirety of Mongolia immigrated south and North Korea controlled Seoul. WHO AUTHORIZED A CHILD'S BORDER COPY OF AN EAST ASIAN MAP TO BE PUT INTO A BOOK!? Also why is Mongolia called Outer Mongolia when they are supposed to put the name of the country and not the name of a territory?

@zacharywilson95966 жыл бұрын
Gray Lensman, exactly. I mean, Mongolia moving to an entirely different location is CLEARLY correct given context, as is the Turks controlling the interior of Arabia (which they never did), Poland changing shape, Milan swapping places with Genoa and Lake Tanganyika ceasing to exist. All clearly correct with no context given, obviously.
@bbh69255 жыл бұрын
1. He explains pretty well. Milan is bizarrely the only city labelled and it’s not even in the right spot, and the HRE borders are off. 2. The Seljuks control way too much of Arabia, Manzikert is too far west, and Byzantium had lost all their land in Egypt and Africa centuries before what this map is showing. 3. Borders are off and very sloppily shown, the regions labels are kind off, at least Silesia’s is. 4. Borders are really far off, even though there are topographical references which should make things obvious. Just pull up a map of Asia in google and see. Just look at North Korea. 5. This one isn’t that bad, the labelling sucks and makes it hard to understand a little. The errors I can see right away are North Rhodesia being disconnected from the rest of Rhodesia and South Africa, maybe I’m wrong, and Canada not owning all the Arctic islands. India looks like it blobbed out a little too. 6. Borders are off again. 7. This is supposed to be Europe during the Cold War. Poland has its post WW1 borders, it still owns parts of what’s now Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania (at this time the USSR) . The USSR bizarrely holds most of what used to be Prussia, most of which should be part of Poland now, and East Germany is also holding on to some eastern territories which should be Polish. 8.Again, just google a map of US states in the Civil War. And aside from being that inaccurate, it looks like the borders were drawn by a child with a crayon, like a lot of the other maps here. If I missed something let me know, I agree the uploader probably should’ve explained some more things.

A bit out of context but I want to share a few moments of history teacher I had in elementary school(8 and 9th grade)- before I say anything I live in the Czech Republic and she was HORRIBLY focused on only our history - 1) this was the last test I had from history in elemntary school and there was the qustion "What was the name of the Bohemian king who was also emperor of the HRE? " When I said that there were at least 2 (Sigismund and Charles IV) she laughed at me saying tthat Charles was the only HR Emperor who also ruled Bohemia(btw I'm pretty sure there were far more than 2 these are just the ones I could think of at the moment) 2) We were supposed to learn about the cold war for the remaining 2 months of school- we spend 3 lessons learning about Korean war, Vietnam war, Suez canal crysis etc. and then she was like :" Ok now that we know what was happening in the world we'll spend all the remaining lessons lerning about the cold war in Czechoslovakia" 3) She gave us a test that was pretty easy but we had very very little time for it (it seemed like she even intentionally shortened it) and were no 1s(As) a few 2s(Bs) and the rest of the class mostly had 4s(Ds) or 5s(Fs). All that just because she gave us so little time. But then One girl started crying because she was used to much better results then the one she got and so the teacher gave her 40 additional minutes. The girl got 1(A) and then the teacher laughed at us for being stupid or unpepared........there were far more situations like this but these are the ones I remember

Hannover should be a little further south. Sweden should be labeled "Norway/Sweden". Paris is just a little more east...…...1:40 Southeast Asian countries borders are a little sloppy...…..2:17 Burma is not a part of India. Also, Bermuda is a little more east.....….2:24 East Germany is drawn too large. Also, Poland is shown with its pre-1939 borders, when Germany was all one country. If it's going to show East and West Germany, then Poland should be moved further west........3:00 Connecticut and Rhode Island are not shown. New Orleans is shown as a separate state. The borderlines between all the upper Midwest states are drawn rather sloppy. Iowa should be smaller.

Interestingly enough, my sister has a massive (like, a whole wall) map of the world produced in the US "at some point" (there is no date) but clearly post WWII, I think we eventually guessed 1953 (it shows, for example, Crimea as part of the Russia part of the USSR). Apart from Silesia, it shows those borders for Poland, Eastern Germany and the Soviet Union. It also shows - with dotted lines - the borders that we would recognise as correct for the time. That't not to excuse the map shown here, just that it they were copying from an early 1950s map - or even one made at the time of the formation of the Warsaw Pact for example - the view of the world that the people of the time might have wanted to show might not necessarily have matched the reality on the ground (or what we now thiink of as the reality)
